Rare Essiesmom Posted January 7, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Yes, you can get there by train. If you pick up a copy of Rick Steves' Mediterranean Cruise Ports, he will tell you all the ins and outs of transport to/from Civitavecchia. You could also visit the Ports of Call boards here at CC. kitty9 Posted January 7, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Trains are available, but you have to handle all your luggage totally on your own. If the trains are crowded, it could be a problem if you have a lot of bags. Any thought of taking the cruise line's transfer?
paul929207 Posted January 7, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 7, 2012 By most people's definition, there is no reasonably priced private transportation from the airport to Civitevecchia. Private cars are 100 to 150 or so Euros and taxis 150 to 200.
Rare Hlitner Posted January 7, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 7, 2012 We discuss this issue nearly every week on the Ports/Europe/Italy board. There are a couple of train options. You can take the Leonardo Express from the airport into Rome's main Termini Station and then transfer to the regional train that stops at Civitavecchia. A better option is to take the slower regional train from FCO to the Rome Trastevere Station where you can then catch the regional train that goes to Civitavecchia. This latter option is somewhat cheaper and the Trastevere Station is closer to both FCO and Civitavecchia then the huge Termini Station. But, there are a few issues with these trains. You will need to be able to easily handle all your own luggage (including steps at Civitavecchia) and you must always keep your luggage under close guard. In addtion, once you arrive at Civitavecchia it is about a 4 block walk (the walk way is wide and flat) to the port entrance where you can get a free shuttle bus to your ship. It can be near impossible to find a taxi to do this short haul from the Civitavecchia Train station so be prepared to make this 4 block walk hauling your own luggage. And I agree with the last poster regarding private transportation. You can arrange (over the internet) for a private car/driver or you could simply grab a taxi for the 1 hour drive between airport and port. But either way you will be paying about 120 Euros +. paul929207 Posted January 7, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 7, 2012 We are flying to Rome in October and I am thinking about renting a car and driving to Civitevecchia, spending a night there, dropping bags at the port, then returning the car and walking to the port. Anyone tried this?
maryann ns Posted January 7, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 7, 2012 I believe so. Go back to the Ports - Italy page and do a search. (look to the right of the blue bar near the top of the page and put in terms such as "Civitavecchia car rent" Make sure you spell Civitavecchia correctly! We connected with three other couples doing the same on our roll-call and shared a van which made a couple of hotel stops to pick us all up for the trip to Civita Vecchia - Rome Limo - it worked out to about $40 per couple including tip. scottbee Posted January 8, 2012 #10 Share Posted January 8, 2012 By most people's definition, there is no reasonably priced private transportation from the airport to Civitevecchia. Private cars are 100 to 150 or so Euros and taxis 150 to 200. How much would a ground transfer be from Philadelphia to New York by car or taxi? Civitavecchia is not Rome. Unlike the US, there's an inexpensive rail option straight form the airport to 4 blocks from the dock entrance, it does involve a change of stations, but it's pretty straightforward.
