Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

They should make those aft open areas at end of decks 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 as smoking areas -- smoke would not likely drift to cabins on sides, and instead would be blown away from ship. Those open decks are somewhat of a secret area!!

No! Please don't take away my favorite places! Nice and quiet and smoke free!

It seems to me that there would be enough space (get rid of one of the bar spaces) to install a non-smoking casino besides the "smoking is permitted" one. From my experience, the smokers tend to gamble more, so make the non-smoking side not quite as large. They can all drink to excess in a variety of bars throughout the ship anyway.

Just a thought.

Hey (and dont flame me about this non-smokers)

im wondering what its been like for smokers on princess since they scrapped smoking on the balcony.....

If anyone could please advise it would be really appreciated

You can smoke up a storm on your balcony or in your cabin if you like. Unless Princess catches you with a lit cigarette in your hand they will do nothing.

We had a problem with a cigar smoker on the adjacent balcony on our last cruise. Even with the old policy cigars were not allowed on balconies. I reported the problem to the Purser's Desk and it was addressed that day. I had a followup call the next day and was asked several times later in the cruise when I stopped by the Pursers Desk. They still smoked cigarettes but no more cigars on the balcony. At least on the Sapphire they enforced the old policy and I assume they will enforce the new policy as well.

Is this your experience?

Yes it was. We just got off the Emerald and reported our neighbors smoking in their cabin. The smell was coming into our cabin. The room steward knew they were smoking as well. We were told that unless they are caught with a lit cigarette in their hand nothing can be done because their room could smell smokey from their clothes. Just another example of Princess not enforcing it's own policies.

I really wonder what they would do if you took their picture as they were smoking & presented it for evidence?

Who besides the steward did you complain to? If the smoke is coming IN to your room, it has to be stopped. That is a big difference from the people's clothes smelling from smoking elsewhere on the ship. Ignoring your discomfort is unacceptable. How far did you take your complaint?

I am a former smoker and my wife a severe asthmatic and you guys and gals are kinda freaking me out. (we have to leave if any smoke present wherever we go due to her health issue) Having cruised the past 2 years on Celebrity, never had any problems with smoke, smokers had designated areas, never impacting cabins or balconies, worked out OK and we never disrespected those areas. I have a Caribe C730 cabin booked on the Emerald, should I consider moving to a Starboard side cabin? C739 is available but I was told to book port for better views coming into port on this cruise by my TA... Any insight here is appreciated, this is my first Princess cruise and I do not want to subject my wife to any distress I could avoid by changing cabins. Thank You!

Thanks to all for the reports on the new smoking policy.

As one of the smoke sensitive group, I'm a bit disappointed that Princess seems to be still struggling with the policy implementation. We were looking forward to sailing with Princess once again, but it looks like more time is needed to sort out the changes.

Hopefully, the policy and enforcement can be worked out to best accommodate both smokers and non smokers.

The only comments about the port side smoking would be about the lido deck area.

It is not near your cabin. It is 4 decks above you.

Although smoking is allowed on the port promenade deck, you are 3 decks above it and the roof of the promenade deck as well as the life boats would not allow the smoke to reach you.

There is no smoking allowed in the cabin or balconies.

The Casino allows smoking so that might be an area to avoid.

Can anyone explain how smoke drifts from one cabin to another? I would have thought it impossible but I stand corrected.

The cabin doors are not flush with the floor and air circulates from cabin to hall and back to cabins. You can always smell the smoke from a cabin in the halls and it also circulates back into other cabins.

I promised - so here it is. A "smokers report". Just got off the Sapphire today - 14 day to Hawaii. This was an experiment for us and my "smoker" parents who joined us. We all brought ecigarettes to help for urges in the cabin. We spent most of our time at the aft adult pool. There were 7 covered smoking tables, fixed bar chairs with a view and lounge chairs, all of which smoking was allowed. The area was always quite full and we made many friends (port side), we spent most of our time on-board hanging out back there (and booked and aft cabin for that purpose.

At the very start of the cruise a few people would wander out with food and sit down and start to comment on the smoking, someone would always politely let them know that the other side was non-smoking and they would go over there (those tables were mostly empty during the cruise). After that, we never had a single rude comment from anyone at the aft pool.

The Casino was another matter. There were two non-smoking nights (first and last formal), there was a section of about 7 tables, that yes did become the indoor smoking lounge. there were MANY MANY MANY people who would walk through doing the windmill thing or holding their nose, etc. For the first time it did not bother me at all. One lady was so ridiculous (these tables were on the side of the casino) she was wandering around SLOWLY holding her nose with her face scrunched up. Mind you, she was not walking through the center area of the casino, just wandering the edge right by all the smoking tables. All of us actually found her funny, and I made my own comment to her, I mean really she didn't even leave the casino, just kept wandering around holding her nose making a face.

Another time this group came through - well into the cruise- waving their hands around like maniacs. There was a large group of us smokers there and we started waiving our own arms around as well - we found it quite funny. Most, if not all of my family and "smoker friends" dealt with condescending behaviors in the casino. But like I said, none of it bothered me at all, I saw the same people over and over again running through the casino to get to the other side, I just couldn't figure out why they couldn't figure out that they could go up or down one level and they would not have to go through it.

Neptune's Reef Pool, the entire port side tables had ashtrays on them, although we did not spend alot of time there - MUTS was just too loud and anoying.

Promenade deck - now this I don't ubnderstand at all - so heads up be prepared. Dad and I walked out from the explorers lounge to smoke on the port side through the door we have ALWAYS used. Both of us lit a cigarette and all of a sudden realized there were no ashtrays out there, plus there were signs everywhere saying no smoking. We had NOWHERE to put them out - Dad ran into the door right by a bathroom and extinguished them in the sink. We walked out to the STARBOARD side and there were the ashtrays. I then saw an officer and asked him what the deal was. He told me that they had just changed the smoking side the week before - he would not explain why. I told him that was going to cause nothing but problems for the experienced Princess cruisers. His response was - "we say we have designated smoking areas, we don't specify WHERE they will be".

Lo and behold one of my friends later went out to the Starboard side and was smoking right by the ashtray. A woman came by, got mad and RAN inside the ship and brought an officer outside with her to point at my friend. The officer then explained to the irate woman that my friend was smoking in a designated smoking area. So I don't know what to say to all of you booking your balcony on the Starboard Emerald deck to be away from the smokers?????

So there it is - my "report". We had a lovely cruise and are already looking at the next to book, as well as my parents. We were fine and will book with Princess again. Inside cabins though, no reason at all to spend the extra money when we spent most of our time outside.

Happy Sailing Everybody!

Tammy

Thank you sprinkles for the thorough and humorous report.... totally LOL about the nose-holding lady who stuck around in the smoking section rather than getting out of the area that she found so offensive. Kind of like someone going to a concert to complain about the noise.

Most people don't want to start conflict, which is why those nonsmokers who you directed to the nonsmoking section in the pool area happily moved to their proper area. I am hopeful that this will all work itself out over time as everyone adjusts to the new policy. What concerns me is the switcharoo on which side of the ship is smoking vs. nonsmoking.... I think that is a recipe for disaster as people with balconies above promenade will be irate that they chose the wrong side of the ship.

The two story ceilings of the promenade deck along with the hanging lifeboats should prevent smoke from rising 3 decks to the balconies.

I will be on the Emerald starboard side next week and will report my experiences .

The switch may have something to do with fueling the ship when arriving to dock.

All I can say is that it very aggravating to have one ships smoking area different than the others. If they change it on the Emerald then change the rest of them also & make it well known before people book a cabin thinking there's no smoking below them. The smoke does rise upward from the promenade deck but how far it goes is yet to be determined.

I forgot to mention Skywalkers. DH went up to investigate it as an indoor place to smoke. He was told that during the day it was non-smoking and at night there was a smoking section - we never went up there at all (too late for us - lol).

Thanks for the kind responses.

The smoke certainly does rise up from the promenad and can be detected from the balconies. I had planned to book a starboard balcony and mark it no-upgrade. Now I can't take that risk especially since the promenad will have more smokers since they can't smoke in their cabins.

Will recent cruisers please report back on this. I just read in the sticky that it is not always the starboard side but it is varies according to the captain's whim. If this is true (I hope it is an error) how can I know which side of the ship to book my balcony on. For those who think to smoke does not waft upward, I know from firsthand experience that it does.
