Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

Gatsby's, on the other hand, was so smokey we couldn't enter except on the non-smoking night and once during the afternoon. I don’t mean the casino contained some smokers - we couldn't get within 10 feet of entering the front door without the stench of smoke rolling out! Someone suggested that perhaps Gatsby's has become the defacto smoking lounge. From our experience we agree with that hypothesis. I don’t know an easy solution to this situation. We are not hard core gamblers, but we missed a couple of evenings at the craps table due to the increased smoke.

Cheers!

I am really sorry to hear this. One of our greatest joys on sea days and in the evenings is time in the casino. Guess we may be spending more time listening to performers in the evenings rather than gambling if this is the case on the Sapphire next month. That's really a shame. Would have been nice if they had designated one of the bars the indoor smoking area, instead of the casino. Or improved the air handlers in the casino to compensate.

I just booked Caribbean Princess after a horrible problem with smoke on Holland Eurodam. We could not use our balcony at all because of the numerous, heavy smokers nearby. The Princess cabin is D733. Should I change it to completely avoid smoke on the balcony?

That looks like a perfect location to avoid smoke.

We were on the Ruby two weeks ago on Dolphin, starboard side, aft quarter. This is a similar location as yours. First off, the balcony is much larger and juts away from the ship an extra 4 or 5 feet(?). The only way you could likely smell smoke is if the person upwind was on your deck.

We didn't get a wiff of smoke on our last Ruby trip and I doubt you will, either.

Enjoy!

With respect to Gatsby's on the Ruby, I should add there is a cigar lounge to the left of one of the entrances. That contributes to the blue haze, too. Somehow, even with the door shut lol.

On our cruise I don't think additional air handlers nor smoke eaters would help save the atmosphere in the casino. :)

I hope your cruise goes well -enjoy!

On Celebrity they initially had the casino smoking but a weeks of that and they made the casino non smoking. Maybe because the smokers were using it as a smoking lounge, not a casino? Loved the non smoking casino on my last Celebrity cruise. Probably to much to hope for but it would be nice if Gatsby's became non smoking by my cruise on Ruby Princess in December!

There is a new policy that prohibits smoking on the balcony. I think they still allow smoking on the port side of the Lido Deck. I don't know about the pool/bar area at the aft of the ship. It seems to me if you allow smoking that would be a good place in that smoke would blow out to sea.

Kind of sounds like the poster thinks that one side of the ships balconies allows smoking... They do not. Smoking is not allowed in any rooms or balconies now....

Has anyone been caught smoking on their balcony? What did Princess do?

Does anyone know what side of the ship Princess alows smokin areas? I am booking a balcony room and want to make sure I am on the opposite side. Thanks.

If you book an odd number cabin you will be safe. But since there are only certain areas that smoking is allowed any deck below Lido will be safe anywhere on the ship. Smokinhg areas are on the right side (starboard) of the ship.

We have smelled smoke coming from 1 of 4 cabins that our steward takes care of, he was not going to tell me which cabin(s) it was so that we could turn them in. He and his supervisor said "we can turn them in", however we could not tell which cabin and we were not going to try to smell it out. We think Princess should offer an incentive to stewards to turn in passengers smoking in their cabins. We were not the only ones that it was obvious to either. Smoking everywhere Port side. Only 1 adult only pool Lotus pool now on the Grand.

I smoke and I have no problem with Princess' new smoking policy. I never smoked in my cabin previously, so the policy change doesn't affect me. I go to the designated areas to smoke. I do wish there were someplace quiet, that I can sit, read a good book, and smoke a cigarette without having to leave the area, but haven't found one.

I've smoked on the port side of the Lido deck as one of the areas that allow smoking. Unfortunately, sometimes there are so many smokers, that it's difficult to find a place to sit and smoke, and other times, there have been nonsmokers at the next table who make disparaging remarks, even though they are seated in the smoking section. With the Lido Deck parties, pool activities, and music, etc., it can get very noise there, too.

I've also smoked in the cigar lounge (especially when it's really cold outside and the wind is blowing). At least in the cigar lounge I don't have to hear anyone complain (although I have heard folks complain in the hallway outside the lounge). Unfortunately, I'm not really into sports, so all the cheering and jumping up and down when the game is obviously a good one, doesn't allow for a nice, quiet peaceful place.

I did try the port side Promenade deck once since it "supposedly" allows smoking, there weren't many people around--just a few folks walking around, there were nice deck chairs to lounge on, it was quiet, and seemed like a good place to relax and read. Unfortunately, every time I did smoke a cigarette (two cigarettes in a three hour period so it's not as though there were a hazy fog around me), someone would walk by, wave their arms around like crazy, and start making very rude remarks (one woman who walked by the second time did the same thing, but added some coughing even though I wasn't smoking and had put the cigarette out the first time she walked by)...so I finally gave up.

I try to be a considerate smoker, and would never consider smoking where it isn't allowed. I understand that not all smokers are considerate, and not all nonsmokers are rude. All I ask is that I be allowed to smoke somewhere on the ship.

It's true that reducing the smoking areas will increase the number of smokers in that area, and consequently the amount of smoke in that area. So Princess' new policy will result in more smokers congregating in those limited smoking areas. Nonsmokers, I promise you I will never smoke in the nondesignated areas, and certainly never in a cabin or on a balcony; all I ask is that I be allowed to smoke in those designated areas without condemnation, and without rudeness. Smoking is legal (yes, I know it's not healthy, but neither is overeating, or caffeine, or alcohol--and before someone flames me and says that smoking affects others' health, so does alcohol).

Princess (if you're reading these posts), I fully support your new policy. I ask that you keep in mind that many cruisers do smoke, so please continue to provide appropriately comfortable designated areas, and we will continue to cruise with you.

BassettMom,

Your post brings a cogent perspective to the Princess smoking policy. You seem to be a considerate smoker and those of us who don't light up appreciate your efforts. Heck, we might even like you we we meet 'ya:)

One thing you bring up is reaction of folks who stray (intentionally or otherwise) into smoking areas. For the sake of fairness, I think it is as important non-smokers know where the smoking areas are as the smokers. If someone is truly sensitive to cigarette smoke then don't stray into the said area; pretty sure you'll smell smoke if you do!

This is not an easy subject and the solutions are difficult to come by. Hopefully the bright folks at Princess (and other CLs, too) will continue to tweak their policies to find the optimal balance.

Take care, and happy cruising!

Back when I was a smoker I would get the occasional rude remarks or fart-smelling faces even when smoking in the proper designated area. So, I would just casually and politely remark "Oh I am sorry, the non-smoking section is over there...." and point it out. Then they would either leave or be quiet about it...never fails.

We were just on the Grand and they have a wonderful aft outdoor patio section with comfy furniture that is sectioned off. No loud music, etc. It is right by the new studio one five disco. We loved that place -- you could go there without having to experience the evil eye, rude comments. I wish the other ships would adopt this type of area.

I believe that is incorrect information. :( Smoking is on port side of the ship.
