Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

I am now vaping in an attempt to cut down on the number of cigarettes I used to smoke daily. In my next cruise, I intend to vape in my cabin and on my balcony as well as in other permitted areas (which seem to almost the entire ship!). Princess' policy with regards to e-cigarettes seems to be quite sensible, except for one phase, as my partner pointed out to me: why should another passenger who "feels inconvenienced" by my vaping have the right to require me to stop? The operative word here is "feels", and not "is." Please note that there is no odor, no side smoke, no residue left on the surroundings, no dirt or ash to be disposed of. Certainly nobody would deliberately direct the residual water vapor directly at another person! Why would anyone complain?

That, of course, is a very good question. What you are doing is quite considerate and acceptable.

Answer? There are those that will find something to complain about in any situation.. Amazingly enough, some of those even find their way onto a cruise ship! (after reading some of the posts and reviews here on CC, I know that some even show up here. I think they take the "Critic" part a bit to seriously!)

I would guess Princess is being cautious. The use of electric cigarettes is so new that investigations as their safety are being done but have not been completed. Your assertion that there is nothing left in the surroundings is something made by the marketers of e cigarettes but actually has not been proven. The marketers make many claims as they are trying to sell their product. It should not be forgotten that tobacco companies at one time advertised cigarettes as being healthy. There should be caution until some studies are done. I hope that it turns out to be true that they are safe and the vapor is safe.

I don't think people will complain but then again as I mentioned I have never encountered anyone using them. If I did encounter them I don't think I would complain unless someone was vaping at me real close. That does not seem likely but then agian I have had people stand next to me and light up a cigarette with the smoke coming right at me.

I can agree with your thinking but my limitations might be a little more strict than yours.

That could be. My thinking is theoretical as I have never seen anyone using the electronic cigarettes anywhere. I am willing to wait until encountering them to see if I have any limitations. Some things that sound good turn out to be bad. Some things that sound bad turn out in reality not to be a problem.

That would appear to be the most common-sense approach. :) If the world operated as you did there would be half the controversy we have today, not just with smoking but with most things.

I have not read this thread for some time, but I must report that when on Coral last month the ship was 'smoke free' other than when we walked by 'Churchills'.

However we did not go into the Casino, so I can't report on it.

I am currently on the Caribbean princess heading to Southampton at the end of a 12 day cruise. Smoking was a non issue. People smoked where they were supposed to. This is my second cruise under the new rules and see no cause for complaints. Even the casino was not as stale smelling as you would expect.

I think Princess has made a good decision in this matter and it works. :D

I have been staying off this thread myself for awhile. DH and I (smokers) are considering booking the Pacific Princess for 28 days and are wondering where you "can" smoke on that ship. Looking at the deck plans I am guesing that there would just be one smoking area up on the pool deck somewhere? Can anyone tell me where that would be and if it is a covered area?

Also if anyone knows which side of the promenade deck is smoking (since as discussed before, it is no longer always the port side).

Thanks,

Tammy

Hi Tammy! I am a smoker myself so this is what I do. Not too sure about the Pacific Princess, but as for most of the ships, I book a cabin either on Plaza level (ocean view), and it is just a few steps from the cigar bar... I am trying to check the deck plans now, just not working right... or I book an inside or balcony on Lido deck... Again, just a few steps from the smoking section... Also, don't forget the casino!

I would love to try the smaller ships one day. Enjoy, you will find enough spaces to enjoy a smoke somewhere!

Have not been on Pacific Princess but have been on other R ships. They were built as restricted smoking, only a small outside smoking area on lido. Of course Princess may do it different. Also the casinos are small. Unless Princess added one there is no cigar bar.

That is why I was trying to look at the deck plans, but the site is either extremely slow or not working right...

In that case, I would book a cabin on Lido deck...

I might not recall correctly, I can't access the plans with this device, no flash, but I don't think there are any cabins on the Lido deck.

That is correct.... best plan would be to go down one deck to 8 and get a cabin toward the aft. In fact, there are two insides right near the aft stairs, 8036 and 8039.

Just wanted to say Congratulations :) I am also a vapour who quit cigarettes by "accident" when I got one for travel and have never wanted a cigarette since. I have never encountered a problem with e cigs, as it is only vapour, that is showing and has no smell most people are very supportive of my choice to not smoke tobacco.

Vjmatty,

I was thinking about booking on deck 8 also, are you saying that the smoking area on the Lido deck is toward the rear of the pool area on the Pacific Princess?

Thanks,

Tammy

Let me qualify this.... I was last on the PP in December of 2010 and one side of the outdoor section in the rear by the Lido was a smoking section. I don't know whether or not that remains to date. And not being a smoker I also don't remember which side :o

Port side Lido by the Neptune pool was my hang out on recent Alaska cruise this May. Also a few tables port side by the Tradewinds bar on the aft end.

Plenty of room most of the time. Spotty service. Open all hours.

Even as a smoker, the smell from the casino was strong outside of it.

That's probably the next causality in the seemingly never ending battle "us vs them"

:).

Have a great trip!

We have a cruise booked on the Princess Star, Caribe Deck starboard in one of the cabins closer towards aft. Where would the closest smoking section be for this? Thanks all.

Star Princess is the same as the Golden... Casino, Promenade deck and Lido deck, and the cigar bar... Decks 6, 7 and 14... You are not that close to any of them! That is why I either book OV on Plaza deck (just a short flight of stairs to the cigar bar), and/or inside or balconies on Lido deck (just a few steps to the smoking section).

Thanks, Working 2 Cruise. Guess I'll go down to Int'l Cafe to pick up my coffee in the am and head to either the casino or the promenade to enjoy my coffee and a cigarette. Granted, I won't be looking that great before I get my morning fixes, but at least I can get them.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm rather amazed that Princess has chosen to restrict cigars and pipes more than cigarettes since they tend to be less offensive in odor, but oh well... I read a post a while back about a program that was concurrent with MUTS, called Cigars Under the Stars, but haven't been able to find anything about it recently. I'm wondering if anyone has anymore information about Cigars Under the Stars and if Shooter's Cigar Bar is really the only place on the ship that cigars can be smoked? I don't smoke myself but my husband does, and we'll be sailing on the Star in August.

Thanks!

The restricting of cigar and pipe smokers to the Cigar Bar was in effect before the Smoking Policy Change this year. Smoking of cigars and pipes in cabins and balconies was not allowed under the old policy.

Hopefully the lack of posts on this thread indicates that people are adjusting to the new policy.

What you're saying is true but when smoking was allowed in cabins & balconies it was somehow hard to tell the difference between cigarette & cigar smoke

- (at a distance). I only noticed smoke one time late at night on the balcony & that was only briefly.

I was talking to a security officer at a lunch & asked about the compliance to the new rules & he said it's been very good so far. On his ship there have been no fines and smokers have accepted the new rule.
