Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

What would be good and would put peoples concerns to rest is to try to compile a list of where the smoking areas are on the various Princess ships. This would help both smokers and non smokers to know where or where not to go. I'll start it off, and if you have been on a Princess ship and have noted the smoking areas please add to the list or in the case of a change, update.

Golden Princess as of Feb.13/13

Smoking permitted:

Port side of open pool on deck 14, about 8 large tables

Deck 15 - port side beside bar, about 4 large tables

Promenade - Starboard side. Ashtrays bolted to ship.

Casino - Small section at entrance

Sports Bar

The key here is if another passenger should feel they are inconvenienced (sorry, I know this isn't the exact wording), the "smoker " should refrain...which goes to my original point...if someone asked my husband not to smoke on the balcony when they were out on theirs, he wouldn't. All moot at this point.

Agreed. That is the smoking policy as stated on the Princess website, if you're smoking an e-cig and it bothers someone they will be asked to not use it. They will not incur a fine as they would smoking an actual cigarette. Personally I don't find it too inconvenient to go to a smoking designated area where I can spark up and not bother anyone. I have used an e-cig in the cabin and on the balcony on occasion and no one has complained. No smell, no second hand smoke.

Does anyone have this level of detail for the Coral?

Can anyone tell me where smoking is permitted on the Coral Princess? I ask for two reasons...

1) I can't stand the smell of smoke and as an ex-smoker, I find myself exceptionally sensitive to it. We are booked in cabin E710, just above the Promenade deck and I think I recall reading somewhere that smoking was allowed on the Promenade deck and that the smell of smoke will waft up to those cabins. If that's the case I will pay whatever necessary to get us away from it!

2) DH loves his cigars (much to my chagrin) and I'm wondering if there is anywhere onboard that he is allowed to smoke them and if so, where is that?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There is a smoking area port side on the Promenade deck, midship. It would be quite a bit forward, and below E710.

I'm a non smoker who doesn't like the smell, but didn't notice it much while walking the deck.

Cigar smoking is quite restricted on Princess ships. They are not permitted in the outdoor areas designated for cigarette smoking. Recently, I was talking with some friends in the designated smoking area, and a gentleman came up there carrying an unlit cigar. He asked the bar waiter in the area if it was OK to smoke his cigar there since it was outdoors, and was told no .... he would have to go to the Cigar Lounge if he wanted to smoke it.

Those lounges on the various ships are the only place I know of where they, and pipes, are allowed.

It appears that the new default for smoking on the Promenade deck is the starboard side and fully aft. There are wall mounted ash receptacles on the Promenade deck in designated smoking areas. We were on the Coral in September and there was one aft and several on the starboard side. Same for the Golden and the Island.

Does anyone have any recent experience with the smoke wafting up? We also have a mini suite on deck 9 on the golden princess. I hate being chased off my balcony by the smell. It makes me ill. :(

Deck 9 is 2 decks above the promenade deck. Life boats hang overhead on the

promenade deck. The smoke will not drift up to you. The numbers of people I have seen smoking on the promenade deck in my last 3 cruises has been minimal. Don't worry and enjoy your cruise.

Thank you for the reassurance!

That is a change from last fall when deck 15 was port side (bar side) by the Grill and Bar

It seems they may be rotating where the smoking sections are so that one area doesn't get permanently affected by smell, discoloration or other early wear. The downside is that you will have no way of knowing in advance where to book your cabin to be near or away from the smoking section.

Outdoors ....

there are little "boxes" for disposal of cigarette butts attached to the wall of the ship at a couple of locations on the Port side of the Promenade deck. I have occasionally seen a few people standing and smoking at those locations.

There is a "smoking area" on the deck above the Lido deck all the way forward, on the port side. It's next to an outdoor bar.

Those are the only places outdoors that I am aware of on the Ruby.

It looks like all lounges except Churchill's are non-smoking.

The SkywalkerLounge and pool area back of the ship were gray areas for me. It's good news they aren't listed as "smoking". Those areas had me worried.

On the Golden last September there were 8 tables with ashtrays on the far port side of Skywalkers.

Does Princess currently (MAY 2013) have an area like this in Skywalkers on other ships?

Eve

I can't say. We have only been on the Golden, Coral and Island since the policy change. The Coral and Island only allowed smoking inside in the Casino and the cigar bar (Churchills). The Golden allowed smoking in the Casino, the cigar bar (Players) and a portion the nightclub (Skywalkers).

I am trying to decide which cabin to book for the Royal Princess. I can't find information anyplace that states where on the open decks smoking is allowed. Which decks, and where? I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke and as long as I can avoid the fumes, it will work. If any one knows this, please share the information. Thanks.

This is off the Princess site:

Keeping the comfort of our passengers a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of passengers, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy:

Designated Smoking Areas

Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available onboard and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks. As a safety precaution, passengers are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires.

Stateroom Smoking Policy Update

For all voyages departing after January 15th, 2012, Princess Cruises will prohibit smoking in passenger staterooms and balconies. This policy change reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our passengers who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the passenger’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our passengers, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our passengers escape completely.

Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is permitted in all areas onboard with the exception of dining areas and the Princess Theater. However, should a fellow passenger in the vicinity feel inconvenienced and complain, even after being told the difference between electronic cigarettes and real cigarettes, we will ask the passenger to refrain from smoking the electronic cigarette.

Not sure about the Royal, but on other ships it is the port side on the Promenade Deck, port side Main Pool Area, and the Deck right above the Main Pool (port side).
