Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

Are you referring to cigarette smoke? If so, it doesn't make a difference which side of the ship you're on if someone forward of you happens to be smoking on their balcony.

Since Princess didn't enforce their own non-smoking rules on my last cruise and apparently others as reported here on Cruise Critic, there's no way to tell what might be the best location for you. It's sad that the non-smoking rules are nothing more than lip service.

Are you saying that after the rule-breakers were reported, they continued to smoke on their balconies?

It was reported to the Purser's Desk. Whether they actually followed up with the offenders is unknown.

The response I got on February 7th of this year was that the smoking ban had not yet gone into effect. That issue was cleared up after I asked to speak with a supervisor.

The smoking continued until the end of the cruise.

If you will look at the smoking sticky thread the mods put up to talk about our experiences cruising with the new smoking rules, you will see that it has slowed to a crawl because there aren't many if any complaints coming in.

Just got off the Crown yesterday, and we were Port side on Dolphin. Absolutely no whiff of smoke at any time from our cabin or balcony, and we never once witnessed anyone smoking where they were not permitted. The only "stray" smoke that we encountered was in the Port side hallway on Lido, immediately up-ship from the permitted smoking area. The hallway had an unmistakeable smell of smoke. Could not miss it. We did not venture into any Lido cabins, so I cannot tell you if the wafting smoke made its way to the interior of the rooms. But in the hallway, it was pronounced.

We recently had a starboard minisuite on the Dolphin deck on the Caribbean Princess and never smelled any smoke. They had 3 smoke free nights in the casino which really surprised me as I had heard there is usually only 2. All of the smokers I saw seemed to be having a good time and were adhering to the rules and smoking in designated areas.

So can I state now that all Princess cruise ships are not allowing smoking on the balconies.

We are booked on a balcony for Diamond Princess in September to Alaska. She contacted Princess Head Office early in March and they advised her that not all ships were following this policy.

I believed that all Princess cruise ship are now adopting this no smoking policy on the Balconies.

I do not smoke but she does. Oh boy she is in for a big surprise.

Confused.

We were on the Sapphire on the April 6th California Coastal. We had a Caribe Balcony Cabin. We never smelled cigarette smoke on the balcony or in any other non smoking areas, BUT we did smell cigar smoke one time on the balcony. We couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from, but it did chase us inside. It was only once, but it was potent!

One thing confuses me. We are booked on Coral Princess to Alaska, in May, and we were informed that smoking was permitted on the Port side of the Promenade Deck. However it seems that at the moment that smoking is pemitted on the Starboard side only.

Which is correct?

Many thanks, john

Personally, I like the new regulations. I am an ex smoker myself so I know how hard it is to quit. I enjoyed smoking for many years.

That said, I respect and thank those of you that smoke and obey the new regulations.

I believe that the trend towards fewer and fewer places to smoke will continue as time goes on. It certainly has been true here in California as well as many other states.

Having just returned from the Crown Princess (the first cruise for us since the new regulations went into effect) we found the rules to be working fairly well for the non smokers except for 2 locations that could be improved without any more inconvenience to the smokers areas.

  • At the Cafe Caribe on deck 15, the automatic doors at the rear of the where the smokers congregate should be closed during the peak meal times. At times there were numerous smokers standing right outside the doors & when they opened there would be a cloud of smoke sucked into the dining area. Simply keeping those door shut would eliminate the disgusting smoke problem.

  • Just as before the new rules took place the casino was reeking with smoke (or the after smell of it on the non smoking night) but now it has become the new indoor smoking room for many people and the whole area near the pass services desk and is much more noticeable than previous. A set of doors on both sides of the ship could at least contain the smoke in the casino.

We were on the port side, balcony, Caribe deck, forward, and did not get affected by any smoke from the promenade deck although a few times I noticed smoke early in the morning & late at night.

I was speaking with the head of security and asked if they had many problems with enforcement and he surprised me saying that most people have adapted to the new rule without many problems.

Thank you for the report. I figured that the compliance with the new policy would be pretty high. Looking forward to my December cruise on Ruby with the new policies. Too bad the casino has become the indoor smoking room though. The only way to stop that would be to make the casino non smoking like it is on Celebrity. It does save me money though since I can't use the casino if it is very smokey. I do have a cruise on Celebrity soon so I will have to get my casino fix and make my revenue contribution there :)

We were on the Sapphire Princess the end of March, and I was pleasantly surprised that the casino was not near as smoky as I expected that it would be. Even though there were always people smoking in the little smoking area, I was not overcome by the smoke - or the smoky smell on the non-smoking nights. Could be because the smoking area was at the other end of the casino from the games that I was playing. Could be because the ship was a California Coastal Cruise and maybe there aren't as many smokers on board. So, between that nice surprise, and the wonderful ability to use my balcony any time without smoke from neighboring balconies wafting over, I was very pleased with our first Princess cruise.

:)Just returned yesterday from a 14 night transatlantic on the Ruby. I'm a former smoker who loved every cigarette I smoked, and who now has advanced emphysema. I know and appreciate both sides of the issue. There was no problem at all. Never smelled smoke unless I wandered into the smoking area (duh to me!). We were on Riviera and Aloha in midship starboard cabins. Smelled nothing on our balconies and even the casino wasn't bad - smoking nights not as nice for me as ns nights. We had people board at three European ports and the Ruby crew were very vigilant in directing our new cruisemates to where they could smoke. Both cruisers and crew seemed to be doing what they should.

We are currently booked on Diamond to Alaska in Sept 2012. Can you advise if they are enforcing smoking ban on balconies? Also do you have any sense of residual smoke in staterooms? I am somewhat allergic so it really is irritating o my sinus'. We have traveled Celebrity historically and they do a good job of making space for smokers while reducing impact across ship ( eg no smoking in the casino).

I can't speak specifically about the Diamond but the new smoking regulations appear to be working for the most part at least on the balconies. If you do encounter a smokey room it probably would be a rare occurrence and you would never know how many people actually did run across one since many don't post on CC. Only once did I smell smoke on the balcony & that was early morning around 5 AM when someone was sneaking a quick smoke & it was impossible to tell where it came from.

The casino is another thing altogether sine it smells like stale smoke even on any non smoking nights. It's impossible to rid the place completely of any odors like the cabins since it's become the indoor smoking room for many people.

On April 23 Princess introduced a more restrictive smoking policy for cigar and pipe smokers. On Crown class ships smoking of cigars and pipes is confined to the Cigar Bars only; there is NO outdoor venue for those smokers. It is really a farce for Princess to claim that the ships are virtually smoke free when cigarette smoking is allowed in the casino which is a public space. On our recent transatlantic on the Emerald Princess, the cigarette smoke from the casino was not only unbearable but disgusting. While one could argue that you can avoid that area it is not so if you are at the Passenger Service Desk; Captains's Circle desk or anywhere else at that level other than those Princess employees BEHIND the Passenger's service desk. Cruisers on scooters wanting to cut through on deck six to the Princess theater (using the ramp provided) have to pass through the Casino to get to the theater. The smoking policy as of January has moved cigarette smokers to the Casino. The updated more restrictive policy for cigar and pipe smokers has eliminated all outdoor venues for them. The reality is there is no place for them to smoke without cigarette smokers who are also permitted to smoke in the Cigar Bars.

The smoke situation by the Passengers Service Desk has always been a problem and I could never understand why they simply can't put automatic opening doors leading into the casino on both sides to at least contain the smoke so it can be vented out.

The only way to avoid going through the casino to get to the theater is to use the elevator or go outside the ship on the promenade deck.

That is why Celebrity made the casino non smoking shortly after instituting a policy like the one Princess put into effect in January. If you leave the casino smoking with a restrictive policy it is going to become more a smoking lounge than a casino.
