Non-smoking cruise ships

Recommended Posts

I'm fairly certain that the non-smoking Carny ship was subsidized by some outfit and when the subsidy ended the non-smoking cruise ship ended as there wasn't a sustainable market.

Of course, I could be wrong about this. It happened once before.

The last year or two when Paradise was on the West Coast the Casino alternated between smoking and non-smoking.

Smoking on the 3day and non-smoking on the 4day cruises.

Never did figure out if it was a corporate decision or an individual Casino Host decision.

It hardly makes a difference to have non-smoking nights. The casinos are so smoke fume infused that you only don't have to breathe in the actual smoke, the stinky harmful fumes are still there.

I know smokers hate when people state this, but there is no way for them to understand how bad it is, their lives are so permeated by the smoke smell and fumes I think it smells normal to them. I feel bad for smokers, I was once one myself. Not only do you have to put up with people being rude to you (not very nice, I know I hated it 25 years ago so I try not to offend), but you have this smoke monkey hanging on your back, weighing you down. There are just no positives to smoking.

The best gift I ever gave myself or my family was to stop smoking and if you smoke, stopping will be a great gift to your loved ones as well.

I never heard anything like this...... subsidized by 'some outfit'.

What makes you say this? Is there some reference you can point us to. It interests me.

Thanks.

Hey now. I read it on Cruise critic.

Could've been Cancer Society, Lung Society, some state involved in the gummint's extortion of the tobacco companies. I just don't remember.

Summit has one section of the large lounge that is smoking, the only indoor area.

Kudos to Carnaval for giving it a go . . . hopfully another line will try again.

sorry, you're wrong on that. As of the first of this year Celebrity went totally no smoking in ALL indoor areas. I was just on board and there is no smoking in any indoor venue.

That is correct. The indoor smoking ban was already in effect when I sailed on Summit's sister ship Millennium in February.

I cruised on the Carnival Paradise twice with my family in October 2000 and October 2001 when it was a totally non smoking ship. The Carnival Paradise was the last of eight Fantasy class ships. I remember that the fines for smoking and having any smoking materials while onboard were very excessive. The fine for having cigarettes in a stateroom was two hundred fifty dollars and being asked to leave the ship at the next port of call. The entire affected stateroom passengers where the incident occurred would be removed from the ship. I am certain that no company subsided Carnival for having a totally non smoking ship. The reason that Carnival cancelled the program was totally a monetary decision. I remember the sailing in October 2001 very well. We did the Western Caribbean seven day from Miami. My cousins wife was a smoker. When we reached Ocho Rios, Jamaica I remember her purchasing a pack of Marlboro's, smoking half the pack and then throwing the rest in the garbage. I also remember that trip because it was the last one for my seventy year old father. While shopping in a small store he bought my wife and I Fossil watches and a gold chain and cross for my five year son, his only grandchild. He also bought my mother a small piece of Lladro, who never left her home and never went on vacation with us. He told me if she didn't like the piece he would never buy her anything again. Five days after we returned home he passed away from a massive heart attack.

The Paradise was built originally to be a non-smoking ship (even had a cigarette with line drawn through it on the hull). When we heard there was a non-smoking ship' date=' hubby and I decided that one day we'll sail on it, and we did in March 2011. It was such a great experience being able to be on a ship for seven days and not have to worry about smelling tobacco except when we went into port. It was also a clean-smelling ship with no carpet burns. I imagine it was also easier for the stewards to clean on turn-around day.

When fillling out our comment card on the last day, we suggested that Carnival consider moving the ship to the west coast as many other Californians would sure love this ship. We stayed a week post-cruise in Florida and whenever we ran into another family at the hotels we stayed at, we recommended the ship to them (don't think any knew about the NS ship). About a month before, I was talking to a TA to get a rate, and I remember she didn't know there was a non-smoking ship. So it seems that Carnival never really marketed the ship very well. And keeping it sailing the Caribbean undoubtedly didn't help sales either. I once asked hubby if it had kept its NS status when it came to the west coast, would we have gone on it again, and he said certainly.[/quote']

The Paradise discontinued the no smoking policy in 2003. It was a smoking ship when you sailed in March 2011.

Hey now. I read it on Cruise critic.

Thanks, anyway.

I sure would have liked to read about that sort of relationship.

I wish you remembered any of the facts so we could find some more info about it.

Oh well.....

The info might have come from Wikipedia, which says it was "supported by several anti-smoking and cancer-prevention groups", but support doesn't necessarily mean financial support. Carnival has never said why they dumped the policy after a few years, but some think it's because non-smokers, as a group, are less likely to spend on drinks and gambling. That makes sense to me a little, since I know many ex-smokers who avoid bars and casinos (and other gambling locations like bingo halls) because they are a trigger to their smoking habit.

It was also not a choice for families or groups that included smokers. The smokers wouldn't agree to cruising on a totally non-smoking ship. This made group and family cruising less desireable, and made for less who were willing to leave family or friends off the cruise and would choose a more flexible line. We ran into a few people getting off the ship at ports, begging people from other ships for a cigarette and light. They weren't aware of the prohibition, went with family and discovered it only after they were ready to board.

I read it on a smoking thread. Not many smoking threads actually survive, thus it's not always possible to do a search for a post on a smoking thread.

Oh well,........Ya gotta believe that if there was a market for a non-smoking cruise ship that someone would look to cash in on that market.....

Actually, some cruise lines are getting very close to non-smoking. ;)

More and more of them are becoming stricter as to where they permit smoking.

Saw a press release somewhere recently that said Celebrity is going to step up the non-smoking restrictions even more by designating only a single area for smoking. As ships go into dry dock for refurbishing, a new area will be built just for smokers. A door will be cut into the smoke stack and a platform will be built inside. Smokers will have to stand on this platform to smoke, and as the exhaust smoke from the engines streams up, their cigarette smoke will be whisked away along with it. Portholes will be installed so smokers will be able to see outside during their smoke break. A special exit door will be used. When the smokers exit they will step into a blast of fresh, perfumed air to blow away any exhaust smells that might have gotten into their clothing or hair.

I sailed the Paradise in Feb 2004 and it was still non smoking at that time.

That was my second time on it.

Apparently they lost money because non-smokers aren't big drinkers or gamblers.

My DH and I did our part for the drinking:D, but we are not gamblers.

  • 2 weeks later...

We were on a Celebrity TA Aqua Class last month. Our next door neighbors smoked on their balcony 5 times when we were trying to enjoy our balcony. The first time, I immediately called Guest Relations to complain. After 25 long minutes they arrived and we all agreed that the smell of smoke had dissapated. They told us to make sure to call if it happened again. The next time, it took somebody 30 minutes to arrive. The following time, nobody appeared. I got sterner with them and ultimately after I had made 5 complaints about the smokers, they evidently sent them a letter.

I was underwhelmed by Celebrity's efforts and their slow response. And if you hate cigarette smoke, being on a balcony next to smokers feels outrageous.

I wouldn't worry about a line's smoking policy, whether they allow smoking or not.

The fact is that you'll always run into the inconsiderate people (if I can call them that, I think I'm being generous by using the word people, but anyway), that will smoke in places they're not supposed to.
