Debunking the Myths - Liberty 6-2-12 Review

I am enjoying your review, it brings back memories of being on the Liberty for the 2nd time this past April. We also did the steakhouse on the first night and the chef's table. I too did a review of the Liberty and know it's a lot of work but oh so rewarding as you get to live your cruise all over again.

So, I am in for the ride, like your writing style and looking forward to more food porn. When you are a food lover like I am you can never get enough food porn. Looking forward to the rest.

The food photos are phantastic! The picture of fish and chips tempts me to give up my prohibition on fried foods RIGHT NOW.

Personally, I am enjoying the element of mystery embedded in this review and am entertained by everyone's guesses as to why the OP is maintaining his anonymity.

This thread, along with the one about the clothing optional cruise and the review of the June 3rd sailing of the Pride have greatly improved the quality of my down-time this week.

Please share links if you can! I'm curious!

(Sorry for the hijack, and thanks for a great review, I'm also hanging on each post and I don't sail on the liberty till next April!)

I'm loving this review! The pics are a great treat, too! We have the steakhouse booked the first night for our upcoming cruise on the Magic and can't wait.

Looking forward to your next installment. BTW, I posted some pics of my cruises to Alaska on FB last year...next thing I knew we had relatives from both my husband's and my family asking to borrow money from us. Lesson learned. The less personal info the better sometimes. Everyone has their own reasons.

Thanks again for the great review!

YOU ARE JOHN HEALD..DISGUISED..TRAVELING INCOGNITO WITH THE WIFE!!

IT JUST CAME TO ME. A BRILLIANT FLASH INTO MY MIND.

OR......You could be a couple desperately in love..but tied to families that cannot be hurt. so for one week a year..you escape and renew your love.

OR......You are an underworld spy....with the wife of your best friend..STAY AWAY FROM MIRRORS...

OR......You are my congressional representative and this is what you do all year long.........

Enjoying your review. AND...please..how much Trivia on the ship? My husband is an addict. I hope a lot. What were the production shows? Good? The pics of the Liberty are great..the suite looks good. What suite perks did you get?

You are right about the sauce for the filet. I get ( when we are lucky enough to dine in the steakhouse)..the mushroom sauce. It is delicious. The Apple Tart they have..which has the apples laid on a carmel sauce........makes Apple tart sound simplistic for such a divine taste treat. Really good.

Hope you two rascals had the time of your life..and it is just the beginning of many more cruises to come!!!

On day 2, I woke up uncharacteristically very early - like, 5 a.m. early. Not sure if it was the motion of the ship or what - there seemed to be vibration everywhere - so much so that, in the middle of dinner in the steakhouse on the previous night, I started saying in my best Scottish brogue "I DON'T THINK SHE CAN ANMARE, CAP'N!!" as we were sitting at dinner. Which reminds me:

Myth: Modern cruise ships are an island of stability, in the midst of a turbulent ocean. "Stabilizers" make this possible. Stabilizers make us go.

Reality: This ship ROCKS, and I mean that, literally. I don't know what these "stabilizers" are, or what they are supposed to do, but I can tell you that whatever it is, they suck at it. We had, what looked to me, like not super rough seas (save one night - Belize - ugh... more on that later) but this ship had QUITE a bit of motion on the middle nights of the cruise, particularly the rocking, side-to-side motion along its longitudinal axis (that's front-to-back, for the non-pilots), or what pilots call "roll". It was so bad some nights I could watch the horizon dip from about 1/4 of the way up, to 3/4 of the way up, out of the windows in the MDR.

So anyway, I was up and about, and snapped a few pics:

After this, it was almost time for room service: :D

Which brings me righ to:

Myth: Carnival coffee is cr@p. Undrinkable swill, a step above lukewarm brown dishwater, and that's on a good day.

Reality: I'm a bit of a coffee aficionado. When I say this, I mean in the sense that, I have a home roaster, and sometimes (not for everyday) will order single-origin, estate-grown, raw green beans, and then roast to the best level for that type, and let them rest for 24 to 72 hours for optimum oil saturation. Then, grind and brew fresh, steeped in a french press. So, when I say I know a good cup of coffee, I have a pretty good idea of what I am talking about.

And the Carnival coffee is fine. Just fine. Room service, Lido Buffet, MDR, all of the cups I had on the ship were perfectly. No, not the best I have ever had, but from all I had heard and read, I went expecting the worst, but was pleasantly surprised.

In other news, we also enjoyed the pastries quite a bit. The danishes were always super-flaky, and that doesn't happen without real butter. And not to sweet. The muffins were very tasty too, I grew to like the lemon-poppy enough that I pouted when I didn't get it. The chocolate was also very good.

you know...we've done the Chef's Table twice and never did the Chef de Cuisine come and speak with us. How rude. lol.

I'm glad you guys had a great experience at the steakhouse and am really loving the review and all the food porn. bowchicabowbow.

Love the whale tail pics as well.

I also enjoy a substantial cup of coffee and was pleasantly suprised on Carnival this go round. It has been somewhat swillish in the past.:D

Am I crazy or did I read somewhere (JH's facebook or blog maybe) that they've changed the coffee in the past few months?

Last March I found the room service coffee "okay" (servicable but not what I'd call good) so I'm hoping that the new coffee is much better.

You did read that they would be improving the coffee fleet wide. Room service was always the better coffee than on lido or mdr (in my opinion). lol

i too, am enjoying your review, so yes, the fact that you had to mention the fact that you are not going to mention any facts :) about yourselves made the rest of us even more curious. if you would not have said ANYTHING about that, we probably would not have even noticed.

but regardless, i am loving your review and my only complaint is that you are not posting fast enough to keep my obsession satisfied.

we cruise liberty on the 23rd and i CAN'T WAIT.

Have you joined the roll call??? For some reason no one wants to interact with us June 23 people :D

I'm a family lawyer, I'm guessing that it's ex-spouses or baby mamas and/or daddies who would try to use evidence of a cruise as evidence of financial wherewithal.

Not that I've ever cross examined someone with their facebook posts or anything....just saying!

Anyway, just my guess, and if I'm right I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, everyone needs a honeymoon, I'm blessed that neither my or my husband's ex are unreasonable but not everyone is so lucky!

LOL. Well the OP's name is "kwagmyre", so this situation would fit the name. Loving the review kwagmyre, I honestly like the mystery, it adds to the story. Keep it coming man.

I've figured it out. You are Amish. The Amish refuse to be photographed or seen on video. Therefore, you are cutting yourselves out of the photos.

LOL J/K

Thanks for taking the time to do the review. I'm looking forward to our Liberty cruise next February. Looks like a beautiful ship!

I am not sure.

I do know that JH mentioned that the cappuchino and expresso on the Miracle would now be brewed using high quality beans and expensive equipment.

I don't remember him mentioning the regular coffee.

Just to be fair and honest I did purchase one of the " new and improved " cappuchinos in the MDR last week... If I could only describe the nastiness that arrived in a cup I would be guaranteed a Pulitzer.

First of all it was a biegy-grey in colo,r the foam was like meringue but in a bad way, the taste, oh my the taste, if one could imagine what a puddle inhabited by sick geese would taste like it might come close.

The regular coffee was really pretty good, in the MDR and from room service.

The lido still had a somewhat swillish version but not as bad as in the past.

Oh, ick, glad I don't like cappucino!

I did notice on the Liberty in January the coffee was MUCH better than in past years - i think they really did upgrade the coffee some. Didn't taste entirely unlike the Costa Rican light roast I use at home. Well, not quite that good, but quite drinkable. :D Besides, coffee is always better with an ocean breeze.

Kwagmyre - great review so far!
