darceyg Posted September 2, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2012 We were on Allure begining of August? Heard bagpiper tuning up each evening. What is the significance?
Stennsan Posted September 2, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Don't know if there's any significance, but I'd welcome a chance to hear some pipes on a cruise. I love bagpipe music. Anyone know if that's a regular feature on the Allure (or any other ship?)
Worn out mailman Posted September 2, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Don't know if there's any significance, but I'd welcome a chance to hear some pipes on a cruise. I love bagpipe music. Anyone know if that's a regular feature on the Allure (or any other ship?) He played for us in March....I couldn't figure out the 'why' either....Maybe it's just something to draw the eyes to the ship while in port (because it's quite audible from off the ship), maybe it's just something new and unconventional for a cruise ship that's new and unconventional. Who knows? It was pretty cool, though I'd rather hear Caribbean music.
Trainman-2 Posted September 2, 2012 #4 Share Posted September 2, 2012 It is simply entertainment... He dresses in full regalia from time to time and marches around with genuine bag pipes. In the evenings he played an "Electronic Bagpipe" (GASP) softly in the pub on the promenade.
ARCruisinNana Posted September 2, 2012 #5 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Yes, it did seem a little strange. He was on our May 27th cruise. I guess it's a novelty.
Cruising89143 Posted September 2, 2012 #6 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Richard Fain is a lover of the bagpipe. He decided that he wanted one on both Oasis and her sister.
Louise34 Posted September 2, 2012 #7 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Hey, I am all for something different, and bagpipes have a great sound.
devvt Posted September 2, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 2, 2012 On Oasis the bagpiper pipes during the C & A Diamond/Diamond +++ sailaway event on the helipad from Labadee and in Central Park during the evening. It is possible that he entertains at other venues as well but these are the only two we actually witnessed.

Ella2 Posted September 2, 2012 #10 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Long, long ago...on a "pre-inaugural" for Oasis of the Seas, we were told that the bagpiper was there to lead everyone into dinner. Who knows if that is the explanation now. All I know is that I am completely CHARMED by bagpipers, and "Scotland the Brave" will bring a tear to my eye...but many people are not fans, I know. I look forward to sailing Allure next May and hearing that bagpiper. :)

andiloveu Posted September 2, 2012 #12 Share Posted September 2, 2012 My mom would love to hear the bagpiper. I will have to tell her there is a piper on board. Our family heritage is from Scotland and my mom plays the bagpipes as well. Very cool. Would love to hear and see that!:)

highlandlassie Posted September 2, 2012 #15 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Stennsan if you ever do a cruise UK (Scotland) get one that stops off in Greenock. 1. you are greeted by the sounds of the pipes 2. you are welcomed with a guid auld Scotttish handshake and a wee dram/hauf of whisky. 3. upon leaving you will hear the pipes again. johneeo Posted September 2, 2012 #17 Share Posted September 2, 2012 We were on Allure begining of August? Heard bagpiper tuning up each evening. What is the significance? Same significance as the piano player at the piano bar, the guitar player at the pub, the string trio in Central Park, I think they refer to it as "entertainment".
ARCruisinNana Posted September 2, 2012 #18 Share Posted September 2, 2012 I'll be on the lookout when I'm on the Oasis next month. You won't have to look for him. The sound really carries and you can't miss it.
TwoTravelin Posted September 2, 2012 #19 Share Posted September 2, 2012 When I have seen a bagpiper on Oasis and Allure, I always think to myself what a diversity of entertainment Royal provides.

sleepless Posted September 2, 2012 #21 Share Posted September 2, 2012 Somehow I missed the bagpipe player on the Oasis. I have an upcoming cruise on the Allure - where will I find him, and is he listed in the Compass? I would love to hear him. There is something hauntingly magical about bagpipe music. Galaxa Posted September 2, 2012 #22 Share Posted September 2, 2012 We were on the Oasis 2 years ago. We were told (by the bagpiper himself) that in addition to simple entertainment in the pub, his playing had 2 reasons. 1- he would walk around the ship in the evening "rounding" people up for dinner. 2- he would play for one hour before the time everyone has to be on board; kind of a" round them up" / reminder to get back to the ship. And has it was stated above by a few posters the sound does carry.
Paulxyz2004 Posted September 2, 2012 #23 Share Posted September 2, 2012 That's all fine and good... but isn't it about what the customer wants? Nope it´s about what the top managers of any company think is best for making their stockholders happy. From reading comments on this thread and on others regarding this topic it seems not too many customers are unhappy with it.
spookwife Posted September 2, 2012 #24 Share Posted September 2, 2012 We were on Allure begining of August? Heard bagpiper tuning up each evening. What is the significance? well was it a passenger who brought his pipes, or was it a member of the Entertainment staff? either way, there doesn't need to be any significance at all. on one of DH's ships( Big Grey Ugly thing, lots of missiles and guns and planes and stuff) one of his fellow Wardroom members played the pipes every time they pulled into or out of port.. In a Kilt. Just Because.
