Breakaway's Blue Ocean now 49$ !!

Admittedly, I didn't know who this Zharkanian person was until I did a Yahoo search on him. Apparently, he's a TV chef with some restaurants. Still never heard of him since I'm not a big cooking show fan.

I have heard of guys like Emirel, Flay and Mario since I go to Vegas for conferences quite a bit. But, never heard of this guy.

That said, I did book the 3 restaurant special on Breakaway. I was thinking about Ocean Blue. I thought $35 was on the high end of what I might spend, but was still considering it. Just looked at MYNCL and the price did indeed go up to $48/pp. Nope....not doing that.

Will see in a couple of weeks whehter they have a crowd at the restaurant.

If this guy is leasing space on the Breakaway, then NCL would indeed have influence over pricing. They may not set the price, but they can urge this guy to be more reasonable since NCL has to be sharing in the profits.

I guess I don't know but I hope that the fish I buy was caught less than six or seven days ago. In fact our local little diner gets their fish delivered daily from south street. I wonder what will happen on the 12 day cruises in January?

it.

More often then not the fish you buy was caught more then 6 or 7 days ago with rare exceptions. Commercial fishermen go out and most don't come back until your fish packed in ice fills the boat. There are exceptions and some day fisherman sell commercial and that fish might only be 3-4 days old buy the time it leaves south street. :)

Maybe a bit off topic, but although the menu seems very appealing, we found the restaurant a bit small and in fact not very intimate, because it is more or less a part of an atrium with strolling people taking a peek inside or literally taking a walk inside. We did not eat there, though, we took the Raw Bar, that is the barrier between restaurant and atrium, but we will go there next time. Even for 50 bucks.

And it is funny to read that some people call it Ocean Blue and others Ocean Blu. Also the NCL web sites use both names. Talking about a confusing restaurant. :)

I could only wish I could eat in Ruths Chris for $49!!! Usually at least $100 per person or more depending on what we eat!! Same for Morton's or some of the other fine dining.

I'll withhold judgement on the price of Ocean Blue until I try it. Around here a family restaurant for two is about $50, so $100 for fine dining is a bargain.

You are mistaken - the poster you were replying to was talking about the $75 for the meal on RCCL, but come to find out - it came with pairings and at that point, it became palatable to that person.

  • PER PERSON$49 (Per Child pricing done on the ship)

WOW! So, not only are they cheating us out of valuable balcony space, (and charging more for it), but, now the they are raising prices for specialty dining (first Cagney's and now OB). Makes me wonder what it will be up to by the time my ship sails next summer and whether or not the other restaurants will have also increased by then.... The MDR is already looking really good to me...:D.

You can add the increase for the spa pass...

It started from $146 to the $169 the next week and now it's $199 per person.

thats good enough for free.

Those are your keywords. For a lot of people, "good enough" is settling. Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying your viewpoint is wrong. It is one of many. For those wishing for better than good enough will gladly fork out that money, assuming it makes sense for them (stuff they don't get back home, its food they like, etc)

FWIW... I posted a review and pictures of Ocean Blue

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1848732

Thanks for that link. If you're a cheese lover I think you'd feel cheated with those offerings! ;)

Looking forward to trying the Beef Tartare (yes, at a seafood restaurant!) :D

Since the Trans-Atlantic spa passes have gone up as well. It's only a matter of time before other things increase as well. My biggest grip food-wise for a change on the Trans-Atlantic before all the price changes started happening in NYC was O'Sheehans...

O'Sheehans late night menu has gone to crap and while it's a free restaurant... who wants Chicken Pot Pie after being in the disco all night? The food options there are silly. Five things you can order and the chicken tenders are gone. I don't get the logic in this change either for NCL. I just hope it's not changed in the Blue Lagoons fleet wide. I love chicken tenders after a night of dancing! :(

I was thinking the same thing. I was at Ruths Chris a couple of weeks ago with three people and in the end it was just south of $300.00. I won't be back too soon, but it doesn't mean that the filet wasn't worth it.

Restaurants always evaluate their menus and take off things that they don't feel are selling well. Possibly there were not that many passengers that were ordering the chicken tenders late at night.

We have eaten at famous chef restaurants and the story is always the same. The food is very good but portions tiny. And the food is overpriced 25%. So we never return. Nothing worse than spending $150 on dinner and walking away hungry ;)

But I bet we try Ocean Blue anyway. We really splurge on vacation and eat at specialty restaurants most nights. I am not a seafood fan so I am wondering how the beef is LOL :)

Supposedly PRIME! :D

(I imagine that we'll try it out as well)

Yes you only 12 guests $89 must go to guest service or reservation desk upon getting on ship as it fills up fast

Suzanne

Any idea if they're offering it on multiple evenings?

We'll definitely be interested. My preference would be for an evening that we're docked in Bermuda, as the casino will be closed anyway! :D

I would like to agree with you about this because the logic is there. However, being in the late night crowd and knowing what people order at the hour - including a good 6 people who were looking for it on the first night I went - I think it was just a cutback again. :( One lady raised a valid point and I put that in my review of Breakaway... to make a Chicken Pot Pie is a lot more work then dropping chicken tenders and fries into a fryolater. There's more prep involved in the pot pie unless they're getting it out of some sort of drum.

I was going to start a Cruise Critic campaign to bring back the chicken tenders but I hope this is only a change to O'Sheehans on Breakaway and not fleetwide at the Blue Lagoons.

There might be less prep work, but if only a few are ordering it, it might not make sense to them to keep it on the late evening menu. I certainly can't believe that they would be cutting back on something that is so inexpensive as chicken tenders.

Also, are you sure they don't pre-make the chicken pot pie and just heat it up?

Maybe if it is a "must have" on your cruise, you could go in the day before or day of when you would like them and make a special request that they be available for you on the night you will be wanting them. I'm sure that if they know in advance, they will accomodate your needs.

Valid point on the pre-made chicken pot pies. I thought they may have made them somewhat fresh given the amount of time, especially on the last night of the sailing, it took for the pie to be delivered.

I did do a Dear Denis letter about the change and one night when I got in there they did have two orders of them available and I nabbed both! The orders are much smaller too for the daytime. I don't know if it's maybe a goal to make O'Sheehans more upscale? Last I recalled from my tour in the UK prior a pub didn't serve chicken pot pie! lol :D

Oh well... mozarella sticks are gone from the late night menu too but I can't remember if they were ever available. I hope a poster here who has been on the Jewel class ships will post if the late night Blue Lagoon menu has changed.

you cannot sit there and seriously believe they're basing their food decisions, that will last for a very very long time, on the first two weeks of sailing. this was a monetary decision, there is no way to argue otherwise
