Silver Shadow on board credit December 2013

Is anyone able to tell us how the on board credit works? We'll be taking the Shadow from Singapore to Sydney in December. Thanks.

Simple. You can spend it like cash on anything except the spa, casino, or onboard future cruise booking. So, boutique? Yes! Special wines, liquors, cigars? Yes! Excursions? Yes! Laundry or dry cleaning? Yes!

Onboard Credit must now be a selective process. We booked a cruise departing October in March and onboard credit we were informed had been discontinued. I queried this with a Silversea Staff member and was told that they had withdrawn the OBC and were deducting it from the overall quote of the cruise.

That is correct. Silversea no longer offers it as a perk.

However, if you book with an Amex Platinum, you typically get an OBC and bottle of Dom. If your travel agent is part of a special travel network (Signature, Virtuoso, etc.) sometimes the network provides an OBC on cruises or certain cruises. Usually they are not combinable with Amex Platinum.

You also should get it from your T.A.

We booked the Cloud for the TA leaving Barcelona October 25th. In the Brochure it said OBC $US1000 for any bookings in 2013. Will check with SS in Sydney tomorrow. Last voyage I had my eye on a wonderful black handbag!!! Hoping it will still be there or something similar this next voyage. $1000.00 feels like Santa has arrived already!!

It will be shown on your SS Invoice, assuming your TA lets you have a copy.

Hope you find the handbag!

In 2011 sailed on the shadow from Singapore to Hong Kong. Had with me TA's confirmation of $1000 OBC.

When I came to settle the account Silversea denied all knowledge and refused to accept my documentation. It all became quite unpleasant with the ship telling me to sort it out on my return home and virtually accusing me of attempted fraud. The Hotel Manager(recently departed after the Alaska inspection debacle) refused to help and was downright rude when I insisted that this was for SS to resolve.

In the end an e mail to my TA was required(she was in the office at the weekend) and my credit honoured on the day of disembarkation.

A word of advice, if you think you have OBC confirm it with the ship on boarding.

I have not sailed Silversea again.

I have just spoken to Sydney office of SS and have been told that they no longer give on board credit even though it states this in their 2013 book. I am looking at the brochure and it states that RESERVE ANY SUITE ABOARD ANY 2013 VOYAGE AND YOU WILL RECEIVE AN ONBOARD CREDIT TO SPEND AS YOU PLEASE. It goes on to say 7 days you will receive US$500 double occupancy and 8 - 21 days you will receive US$1000.00

We have received no notification of the change in their policy and once again, like many others have become more than upset at Silversea.

They promise the world and then reneg. This is the third major upset we have had in the last 2 years.

Any suggestions from CC members???

After your post I sent an email to SS in regard to our OBC. We had received paperwork from our TA stating we had $1,000 SS OBC & a further $600 as a thank you from our TA. SS replied this morning that they only had $1,000 OBC for us, and to therefore get our TA to sort out. I have forwarded the email from SS to our TA, will keep you posted. We booked our October 13 cruise on Silver Whisper in Feb last year and paid in full in Nov last year. It seems very odd that your OBC has disappeared..............I would do as Col Wes says and contract Guest Relations.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last week we emailed Frank Sansone, Silversea Fort Lauderdale and he replied to say that he had forwarded our mail to Silversea Sydney. Several days ago we received a letter from them explaining our question regarding On Board Credit and the Crew Welfare Fund.

We now understand that On Board Credit was discontinued when the new fare policy was introduced on 1st November 2012 and a trade press release was sent out regarding these changes.

Therefore, as the Silversea Cruise Atlas was printed in early 2012 these changes were not included.

Our reservation was made in early June 2013 so on board credit has not been applied to our reservation.

The Crew Welfare Fund is officially called Maruzza Lefebre D'Ovidio Foundation and the donation is USD1.00 per guest per day. In addition should guests wish to opt out of this they can do so at any time during the voyage. We hope this explanation has made things a little clearer to everyone concerned.

WAIT!!!!! I thought the foundation was the special charity that the family had set up (and to which all SS passengers must donate $1 per day, per person, unless they opt out)

Here's part of the description from the SS website http://www.silversea.com/why-silversea/social-environmental-responsibility/maruzza/

From Cure to Care: A Mission of Love

Under the leadership of Elvira Silvia Lefebvre D’Ovidio, Maruzza’s sister, the Foundation works together with local government organisations assembling specialised networks to promote excellence and equity in the provision of palliative care and support for persons affected by life-threatening or life-limiting conditions and their families, regardless of age, cultural, social and economic background.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the Crew or their welfare (unless they happen to need palliative care in Italy.)
