Not Good.

I agree that smoking inside isnt good, but I pay for a balcony room so that I can smoke!!

You and me both! There are other cruiselines that still do allow balcony smoking. I'm looking at NCL's site right now.

My wife and I are both 2 pack a day ex smokers and we were never aware of how our smoking was intrusive in public places. I started smoking when it was the cool thing to do back in the 60's. Back then the percentage of smokers was much higher and you could smoke just about anywhere except inside movie theaters. Smoking is still legal and some consideration needs to be given to people that smoke. In Asia the percentage of smokers is much higher and the tolerances for where and when smoking is allowed is different. I've got to believe that that's the reason Asian cruises are exempted.

So, while I'm personally glad that smoking is restricted lets not treat smokers like criminals. They are paying passengers too.

I have not been a smoker, but my wife is an ex-smoker. Having places on the ship where individuals can smoke is ok, but the balcony smoking is a problem as the smoke tends to linger to balconies next door. We have noticed that aft balconies seem to be especially bad in this regard. Hopefully, this decision will help everyone. We are trying our first cruise on Celebrity to experience a more smoke free environment, but they do have 4 areas on their ships (S class) where individuals can go to smoke.

RCI has pushed its smokers to the few areas that allow it, such as the casino. In order to transit to/from dinner or the theater, it is often beneficial to cut through the casino. I was on the Freedom of the Seas last year, and my clothes and hair reeked of cigarette smoke from my efforts to enjoy the casino, which was not possible. Now before you smokers attack, I was a smoker until 2012, when during a medical test for my abdomen, lung cancer was found. After surgery and chemo, I'm back to jogging because it was found at an early stage. I no longer smoke, and it took lung cancer to make me stop. So don't hate; get a CT scan of your lungs and join me in urging RCI to stop pushing more smokers into the casino!

I'm thrilled with the new smoking policy. I've been on too many RCCL cruises where I couldn't enjoy my balcony because of smokers using balconies near by and it was very frustrating. Without my kids, I've always sailed Celebrity because of their stricter smoking policy but my kids prefer RCCL so now we can all be happy.

This is great news. Now if we could just get a smoke-free casino.

That's what makes no sense to me. I guess it is all about money. I figure more smokers gamble than non-smokers. Evidently they got tired of non-smokers whining so gave in on the balcony smoking but won't change the casino since it would lose them money.

I am a stock holder.........will be cashing my stock in. I have always cruised on Celebrity and never on RCL and was not happy when Celebrity changed their smoking policy.......I can understand stateroom no smoking, but balconies? How many people actually use their balconies all day long? I have book my first cruise on RCL for May 2014 to Alaska and got a balcony cabin, just so I could watch the view and enjoy a smoke every once in a while. I will be cancelling soon. I can get the same price on NCL and probably will do that.

For all your extreme perfume smokers........your perfume makes me gag when I get on the elevator with you.........must be as bad as my smoke, could RCL please ban perfume!

Carnival and NCL will be the last holdouts to smoking on balconies.

I am sure they will follow suit.

Just watch

......

I remember on our first cruise you could almost walk the entire ship and smoke.

Times change

This is a direct quote from RCC UK web site, does this mean the ban if correct is for cruises from the US

"Smoking in public areas is only permitted in designated smoking sections which vary from ship to ship. Generally, smoking is permitted outdoors on only one side of the ship; and smoking is permitted on all private ocean front balconies, including Loft Suite balconies on Oasis Class".

The new policy is on UK website also - (you need to go past the current policy and then there is the new one.)

Now I wonder if I will be able to get some OBC for their policy change. I booked a balcony cabin because I could have a smoke out there. I have several hundred dollars tied up in non refundable money (air plane tickets, non refundable hotel room) so I can't just cancel without penalty.

While the change in policy doesn't surprise me, I am disappointed. I won't stop cruising Royal, but I will stop paying the premium prices balcony cabins are charged, and go back to inside rooms. So in theory I can cruise more because of the change.

As you are from the US and you are before final payment date you may cancel and get a full refund ( other than your deposits on hotels, flights etc.) or you can as you suggested change your balcony to an inside room and save the money on this cruise but DO NOT expect any sort of OBC from RCI.
