Smoking Policy (More...)

I am not going to argue re smoking vs non smoking.

What I am going to say though is in response to any and all, smokers and non smokers alike.

I do not want smoking in the staterooms at all because now that it is banned, you can definitely smell a cigarette smokers room from the hallways, when they are smoking in the stateroom!! And believe me, I smelled it several cabins away from it while delivering M&G Invitations to LAFFINVEGAS on our Alaska cruise last year. I knew she and Tom did not smoke and yet the smoke was extremely strong from near her room.

I also do not want smoking allowed in the staterooms due to what a CC member and her hubby had to suffer for 21 days after I left the stateroom in Sept 2011. Even with Deep Cleaning (several times, if I remember her email to me correctly), removal of soft goods etc, she stated that the stench was embedded possibly absorbed by not only the shower curtain, which was her guess, my guess is that plus the bed itself (mattress, box springs, couch (sofa bedding) and more........

All I am saying is that more non smokers would be affected worse if smoking was once more allowed in staterooms than they are/might be on a verandah.

I get your point, Joanie, but I don't want to be chased off our verandah either.

Most of our cruises, we have not encountered too much trouble with neighboring smokers but one full cruise we lost use of it the entire time and another we could never enjoy sailaway due to two smokers on verandah beneath ours. As long as HAL permits verandah smoking, verandah cruisers from other cruise lines will come to HAL and there will be more smoking on more verandahs which makes the non-smokers' verandahs unuseable. HAL will = Ashtray of the Seas if this continues. That most assuredly is not Signature of Excellence.

Where is the like button? So far, we haven't lost use of our verandas, but I'm sure that one of these days it will happen to us too. Part of the enjoyment of having and paying for a veranda is being able to use it. Somewhere on the ship there should be a designated area for people to smoke.

Thank you.

I think most of us understand that. :)

Sorry, didn't mean it as snark---seriously. Just a comment about why the cost of smoking along with causing health issues isn't a detriment to smokers, as you mentioned it should be. My bad...shouldn't have commented.

We generally avoid booking verandas on HAL for just this reason. But last spring we had a veranda on the Westerdam for a 35 day cruise and seldom smelled any smoke (guess we were lucky). So we are gambling again and have booked a veranda cabin for a 38 day HAL cruise next fall. Guess I could take along the smelliest cigar on earth...and if anyone bothers me with cigarette smoke perhaps I could repay the favor.....wind direction permitting!

By the way, we follow a personal rule on HAL cruises which is to never gamble (even one penny) in their casino. I enjoy gambling, and would normally contribute to the HAL bottom line....but I do not enjoy the stink in HAL casinos. So it is their loss and my gain :)

Actually, yes. I would rather smoking was permitted in cabins but NOT on verandahs. If a smoker stinks up our cabin, it can be deep cleaned and the soft goods changed to get rid of the stench.

We cannot do anything about a smoker poluting the air we are breathing and forcing us off our verandah.

We have lost use of it because of smokers and please do not recommend we go to another cruise line. It is cavalier and dismissive. We have cruised HAL over 80 cruises and that is our cruise line of choice.

We will continue to encourage HAL to ban verandah smoking. It has been a vocal majority that accomplished the smoking restrictions that now exist and it likely will be the 80+% of non smokers that will get rid of this last area that is so disturbing to neighbors.

I don't wish to ban smoking entirely on the ships but I do want to ban it in areas that cannot be avoided by those who don't want to smell it. I'm fine with one side of aft pool being smoking. I'm fine with a portion of Promendade (though I don't really like it) and I encourage one interior space that can be avoided by anyone who doesn't want to be exposed.

[/b]

No amount of deep cleaning is going to get rid of the smoke smell if a person smoked in the cabin during the cruise before yours. A friend has a$1000 credit on Celebrity because the cruisers before him put out the "do not disturb" sign and smoked their brains out for 14 days.

I am not a smoker, but have chosen a verandah for our next cruise. I know we are taking a chance, but we will still have the great view. No one has to cruise HAL. If you are going to be bothered by smoke on your verandah, cruise another line. There are plenty to choose from! I do hope HAL will change their policy in the future, but until then, I am not going to criticize the smokers for doing what HAL allows them to do.

I repeat...... :) Please do not tell us to cruise another cruise line. We will continue to urge HAL to further change their smoking policy, as we have been proactively doing with some considerable success.

I hope you enjoy your verandah and do not have to cope with neighboring smokers. Most of our cruises, we have been fortunate but when there are chain smokers next door, it can be miserable.

Question from an almost newbie (only cruised once with HAL 10 years ago) - is smoking allowed everywhere by the aft pool, or is one side (port or starboard) nonsmoking?

Smoking is permitted on only one side of aft pool..... no smoking at Lido pool.

It usually is smoking on starboard side but we've seen it port sometimes so check where the ashtrays are. :)

Question from an almost newbie (only cruised once with HAL 10 years ago) - is smoking allowed everywhere by the aft pool, or is one side (port or starboard) nonsmoking?

At the December sail-away party on the NA ash trays were attached to the most rear railing. Since they are portable they can be moved at will as on the Promenade Deck too.

Just to state my case again, smoking is not a matter of preference it is a scientifically proven health risk to all and an invasive, intrusive, harmful practice that affects all those around the smokers . Non -smokers have no way to protect themselves except by denying themselves the use of their balconies, the Promenade deck, the Aft pool, the Observation deck, and the casino.

It is illogical to try and justify smoking as a "right" when it pollutes the very air we breath and is a scientifically proven health hazard.

Someone asked where should smoking be permitted? The logical response would be in your own home. Since that will never be the case, it should be restricted to the one, least used area of the ship.

I agree with the person who stated they we, health-contious passengers should NOT be told to choose another cruise line. I have travelled on 6 different cruise lines and enjoy them all. I like variety. HAL's traditional ship experience is one of my favorites. I am sorry that HAL continues with its liberal, illogical smoking policy. I will continue to be a voice for a more restrive smoking policy. Celebrity and Princess who have a similar demograhic to HAL, and now RCI are succeeding with their more restrictive smoking policy. If HAL doesn't catch up all the smokers will be migrating to HAL ships, making the smoking situation worse. In fact I met a few in December who were on the NA only because they could smoke on their balconies.

With more smokers booking HAL cruises, clean air will be more difficult to find, more balconies will be filled by former Princess, Celebrity, and RCI smokers.

Yes, HAL will be known as "The Smokers' Cruise Line". There goes their signature of excellence!

It is logical and the right thing to do for the comfort and most importantly the well - being of all its guests to institute a more restrictive smoking policy.

The entire scientific community has proven that smoking is a health hazard!

Here's to a healthier New Year to all on land and sea!

LIKE! And would add that HAL's casino could be referred to as the "Signature of Stink." We sometimes will walk to the next deck to simply avoid having to walk through the casinos on HAL ships.

Not even there if your home is a City of Ottawa Community Housing unit. Smoking will be banned from the city’s 15,000 social housing units starting next year. Ottawa is not alone, as about 70 cities across Canada have gone smoke-free in their public housing so far.

You still have not answered the question. You listed out many areas where you don't want smoking. Where do you want smoking?

I guarantee, any place you name, someone else will come along to say "Not there. I like that space."

"In your own home" is not a valid answer, as this site is about cruise ships.

The San Diego union Tribune reports today: "Effective New Year's Day, Coronado, Ca will outlaw outdoor smoking.

You won't be able to smoke on streets or sidewalks, in parks or parking lots..."

How long will it take HAL to catch up?

In answer to Ruth C, perhaps a smoking lounge could be created at the top of the ship. On Signatue class ships the sparsely populated Silk Den comes to mind. Then the smoke would stay at the top of the ship.

There is no justification for polluting the air of innocent victims!

By the way, I am an ex-smoker who was totally addicted to the filthy habit. So I know what it means to live from one cigarette to the next.

Signature class is two ships out of 15.

You just won't answer the question.

Well, I'll answer the 'question'! :) I want smoking onboard all HAL ships confined to the starboard side aft pool/bar area & on the forward starboard side of the Observation Deck! Eliminate ALL indoor smoking venues, including the Casino as well as the entire Promenade (Wraparound) Deck! ;)

The answer, of course, is many non-smokers don't want inside or verandah smoking at all. However, I happen to feel there should be an interior location where smokers can go in poor/windy weather. We had to give up going to the casino long ago because of the smoke cloud and many others who don't want to breathe that smoky air have done the same. Seeing the "R" and "S" class ships and I presume Prinsendam, as well, don't have an obvious place to use as an interior space (IMO), my response to you would be leave the Casino as smoking and ban it everywhere else inside and on verandahs.

I am fine with one side of aft pool being smoking and can 'live with' promenade having ashtrays on one side.

I know many would like smoking banned entirely but I don't think that reasonable or going to happen anytime soon.

But that's not the question. The question asks that people who want smoking limited offer a solution, and not just a complaint. That is what luv4cruises seemingly will not do.

I know many would like smoking banned entirely but I don't think that reasonable or going to happen anytime soon.

I agree, although it is a valid answer to my question.
