I keep seeing how these acts are free at county fairs. Some fairs may pay the band and present them for free, but these bands cost a lot more than $20 in most cases.

 

STYX is playing the Pechanga Casino in CA tomorrow night and the prices are below...nothing close to $20 and for $10 more than the best seat in Pechanga I can get great seats, meet n greet and photo op on Carnival...and I don't have to drive or fight any traffic.

I agree with you. My age bracket is the Boomer/Woodstock generation. My point is that the rock acts are lame. There are way better acts that they could have booked.

Chicago is lame? 46 years touring, 21 top 10 singles and if you don't think they are still current, then why are they doing a duet with Robin Thicke on the Grammys on Sunday?

I would suggest not to sweat the small stuff (the list of performers announced) and look at the bigger picture. Carnival has the ability (much like Amazon when you purchase CD's online) to capture data from guests on a given week and guests on upcoming cruises) which artists they would like to see on a future cruise

The private full charter music theme cruises have shown that performing a "gig" at sea is highly sought out by today's popular artists....it is no longer your "Love Boat" or "legends" shows. On my Capital Jazz SuperCruise. Charter on the Carnival Freedom this past November there were 20 current or past Grammy nominated artists who performed. Artists pressure their booking agents to get bookings on cruise ships these days

Carnival (as has other cruise lines) have taken notice, and adapted a strategy for their regular sailings. Do not be surprised to see a Carnival banner at popular music festivals this summer as they seek to capture fans of popular artists to cruise with their favorite artist on a future Carnival cruise

The technology and social media exists today, that Carnival would team up with Amazon that when I order a CD or download of my favorite artist online a Carnival "pop up" or twitter alert will tell me I can see that artist perform on a specific Carnival cruise in the near future and by pressing the Carnival link, will allow me to book a cabin at that moment

Carnival is moving forward in this area...they are using this first wave roll out of artists and ships to work out the kinks...other cruise lines will quickly fall in line as will cruisers

If you do, also let him know that an overwhelming amount of people would prefer the return is a steel band to a tour of has beens. I'm surprised Kathy Lee Johnson didn't make the cut.

Actually most of these acts can be seen for free on the county fair circuit. The program might have been a good idea if the acts weren't so outdated. Most have not had a hit in a generation.

 

We even had the Beach Boys as part of admission to a balloon festival we went to.

Actually, they were lame 15 years ago. We saw them in some park in Connecicut or some campus. It was hard hearing those songs sung by someone else. Obviously, I must be a closet Peter Cetera fan. The only song that sounded right was Make Me Smile.

Question on this

 

When they have a concert in main lounge one night exactly what does it replace?

 

A. Is it a production show?

B A flyon?

C An evening production of love and marriage?

D The chance to watch others play hasbro?

 

If it replaces a night of professional entertainment it is actually a cutback for those who dont want to pay for the concert.

 

Hopefully it is C or D.

 

Honestly, on the Conquest last month for 3 weeks and I can't remember going to the theater once.:eek: The entertainment in the theater was really sad!

 

On a 7 day cruise, 2 nights were production shows (we didn't go to these because we had already seen them and no one could pay me enough money to sit through them again), 2 nights were the Hasbro game (seriously should not be main entertainment at night!), 1 night was Welcome Aboard show, I believe one night was Legends, and I do forget what the other night was.

 

On the Conquest, Carnival depended on the passengers to be the entertainment in the main theater. It was so bad that it made me wonder if Carnival was going to do what they did with the Farewell Party, very few attended (even though not advertised well) so they go rid of it. Was wondering if Carnival might be thinking, poor guest attendance, lets get rid of the theater and put in more cabins.:eek:

 

Fortunately, there was a great band on the Conquest. I just wish they played somewhere other than the Casino bar. Seating is awful, couches on both sides of the band and people constantly walking through.

For someone already planning on taking a vacation this gives them even more reason to cruise. And too pay $20-$40 extra to see a band like reo is a great value IMO

Carnival did not book NKOTB. The promoter, who booked the charter did. The prices for those cruises is different than regular cruises. Those are specialty cruises. I agree they need to book cabins, I guess we are going to agree to disagree as to how. I guess, being in the industry, I am a music snob.

 

 

Actually they did book the kids. Our BDM left her job to take on this new role for Carnival. True it's a charter. My point is the different types of music that has appeal. We can disagree, there is nothing wrong with that. I would not call you a music snob, not even sure what that means. It will be interesting to see how these do.

Or maybe even better, passengers bringing sleeping bags on board so they can stake out "their place in line" right after breakfast that morning. That vision includes those calm interactions between guests as they challenge each other over "those seats are taken" responses. Or finally the relaxed manner in which a ticket holder tells Carnival staff that "there is no way in hell they are going to sit behind that pillar. I paid the same price that everyone else did and expect to be able to see the stage". The concept of paying for entertainment adds a whole new dynamic to enjoying performances on the ship. Or maybe I am just being unrealistic. Only problem is, I doubt it.

So excited, just bought our tickets for REO on the Ecstasy in April. I am a classic rock fan, so this is great. I think Carnival and their Marketing people have come up with an absolutely ingenious idea. As a Marketing person myself , I am impressed with this whole Carnival Live concept. My thoughts are they started this for several reasons . One, some of the most visited ports are the first to get Carnival Live. People often complain about going to the same ports all of the time but now they have something new and exciting at these ports. Two, the first ships to get this are the Fantasy Class. Again, I suspect these older and smaller ships have a lower occupancy rates than most of their other ships. Add a new and exciting program, and boom occupancy rates go up ! Third, they are getting a ton of free publicity . USA Today, ABC news, and many other news outlets have done stories on Carnival Live. Social Media is a buzz. Kudos to Carnival for coming up with different, new , and exciting for their customers. Well done !

I think it's also a great way for them to attract people who might not cruise otherwise. Lots of ships already host theme cruises that feature musical artists, and generally the folks who go on them aren't cruisers (or at least not avid ones). The Carnival Live prices, even for VIP, are much lower than what you'd pay for just a concert ticket (with no meet and greet privileges) on land. Granted, passengers on these sailings also have to pay the cruise fare, but they get a concert and a vacation out of it. :)
