Alaskan Breweries

Hi guys!

Sailing to Alaska for the 1st time this September and was curious where the best places in port are for fun craft beers? Or maybe a cool brewery?

I've heard of the Alaskan Brewery Company, but is that the only one? Anyone been to that one before? I think it is in Juneau.

Thanks!

Happy Bear in Ketchikan was really fun. It is easy to find. In Skagway there is a brewing company on the main drag. Photo was taken in Skagway.

The Alaskan Brewing Company is the only one not in easy walking distance. It is worth the trip though. It is in Juneau. We lucked out and got to go there with a friend that lives in Juneau. He also took us on a fabulous hike to the Mendenhall Glacier.....local style.

Enjoy!!

Denise

In Juneau the Alaskan Brewing Company gift store is within walking distance of the ship. They offer a bus to their brewery for tastings & if I recall correctly it was about $15 round-trip or you could take a cab to the brewery.

We are going to do the Mendenhall Glacier/Whale Quest and Salmon bake in Juneau which will leave us exactly 2 hours until we need to get back on the ship, so if we can squeeze in a quick tasting at the Alaskan Brewery Co we are are going to try are hardest!

The Skagway Brewing Co. is at the end of the main drag and has good beer and lunch too. The Spruce Tips Beer was quite good, and their soups are divine, especially on a rainy day. Alaskan Brewing is definitely the highlight if you have the time to take the tour. Taps are open and you can taste and taste!!

Alaskan Brewing Company is worth the trek, and the shuttle from the gift shop in town is handy. If you're coming to Anchorage, we have a few great breweries...

1) Glacier Brewhouse- outstanding local food and beer

2) Moose's Tooth- best pizza and local beer

I second the Skagway Brewing Company - towards the end of the main street, on the right as you walk up just past Wells Fargo bank (not far to walk).

Was there this past Tuesday and enjoyed their Spruce Tip and Porter (darker) beers. Or try their samplers as pictured above.

They also have a Stout and IPA that I've tried on a previous tip after doing the bike descent from the summit (good that I did it in that order!).

Love it guys! You are awesome. I don't think we are going to Anchorage. Technically we'll be boarding in Wittier, but since we are doing the 4 days in Denali before the cruise, I think we pretty much de-board the train and then hop on the boat.

I'm definitely writing all these other one's down!

Our main stops are Fairbanks, Denali, (Wittier), Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Vancouver.

So here's another question, does Princess have any "interesting" brews on board? Personally I love IPAs, I'll stick to wine if all they have is Bud Light and the likes.

Princess should have a selection of the Alaska Brewing Company (the Juneau brewery) on board during their Alaska Season. Had it before on Princess Alaska cruises.

They have typically had Alaskan Amber and Alaskan Summer.

I don't know if they still have the etched (Alaskan Brewing & Princess logos) souvenir beer glasses but a couple of years ago they were available to purchase for $2 when buying an Alaskan Brewing Amber.

We went to Alaskan Brewing Co. We took the public bus. Not far from them is a salmon factory, which we went too. It was small but nice.

  • 1 month later...

Off a mid June Star sailing and we visited The Alaskan Brewing Company. The beer was great and the had both their Amber Summer onboard, you just had to ask for them. I found both brews back in SF Bay Area on return and have the Summer in the fridge right now.

Yes, and that tour was well worth the $15! You taste all their beers and learn a lot on how the company started. And when finished with that, more for the tasting! The beer is really great especially the Amber.

Alaskan Brewery had IPAs. I don't care for those types but they did have it. I liked the Amber best from the tasting and for sale on board Island Princess last summer along with another of their offerings.

I found the Alaskan beers on my cruise 2 years ago and I was instantly hooked. I am going nuts because they don't sell it here on the east coast...yet.

Of all places, I found it in Las Vegas last year during a conference. There are several casinos that sell it.

Have to second the recommendation for Skagway Brewing. The Spruce Tip beer was phenomenal, the food was good, and the people were friendly.
