dusababy Posted June 11, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 11, 2014 Just received an e-message from SS offering 10% above Silver Privilege Fares for single supplements -- solo travelers! FINALLY! And lists many "selected" voyages on all the ships including the expedition ships through this year. Stay tuned -- there may be fine print involved when bookinig -- and of course the itineraries may not be the most popular - but so far, great news. Have been lobbying for this ever since I lost Mr. Wonderful. Dusababy aka Mary Ann

5waldos Posted June 11, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 11, 2014 Nice to see them- sometimes going off alone is a very nice treat. But- could someone explain to me what Gentleman Escorts are?And why not Lady Escorts?
duct tape Posted June 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 11, 2014 There are always single women on the ship who like to dance and they need dance partners...ergo...gentlemen hosts. I did read that some line has now added Women Hosts, but I forget which one. The single men who want to dance are not wanting for partners! But- could someone explain to me what Gentleman Escorts are?And why not Lady Escorts? They are Gentlemen HOSTS - not escorts. I believe Escort Services provide a different service -- may be mistaken since I've never engaged one of either gender......;)

frockoff Posted June 12, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 12, 2014 Speaking of Gentleman hosts. I believe Silversea should do away with them. Firstly because on our last cruise there were 2 gentleman hosts, one was servicing 2 guests only - a mother and daughter. The other one, was accommodating 1 single lady. A total of 3 guests. In their spare time (the gentleman hosts), they were always seen to be in the gym for lengthy periods (taking up paying customers' equipment), solo in La Terrazza for breakfast. If Silversea want to cost cut, this should be number 1 on the list.

And while I don't let it really upset me, I do have a niggling irritation at the blatant sexism implied, although given that it's an Italian cruise line, I suppose that's inevitable. specialcruisegirl Posted June 12, 2014 #10 Share Posted June 12, 2014 Excellent news about the single fares....she says ..having just made final payment and note that my voyage is listed...suppose we can't win them all! As a solo female traveller l am not keen on the gentleman hosts even though l love dancing. I just don't feel comfortable with it at all. Observer Posted June 12, 2014 #11 Share Posted June 12, 2014 I was recently sitting within easy hearing distance of two Gentleman Hosts who were talking loudly with each other. They would have to have been blind not to have seen me. They were joking with each other about (paying) guests, making absolutely inappropriate comments about one passenger after another. I could hear all of this clearly. I was appalled.

duct tape Posted June 12, 2014 #15 Share Posted June 12, 2014 Observer, dusababy is absolutely correct. The "gentlemen" will be off the boat tomorrow if they violate the rules of their employ. I have seen it happen.
jollyjones Posted June 12, 2014 #16 Share Posted June 12, 2014 My next SS cruise, for which I have made final payment at 25% supp., is on the list so I've asked my TA to see if there's any OBC or cabin upgrade possible as a compensation - it'll be interesting to see what happens. National stereotyping - good?
johnnycruise Posted June 12, 2014 #20 Share Posted June 12, 2014 The male singers and spa staff danced with the single ladies on our cruise and everyone seemed to have a good time. So, employing gentleman hosts I agree is an expense that can easily be cut. However, our cruise had several empty suites. Perhaps on the "gentleman host" cruises Silversea expects to have lower occupancy. The hosts who talk about other guests, though, should be made to walk the plank.
jollyjones Posted June 12, 2014 #21 Share Posted June 12, 2014 Sexism - bad. National stereotyping - good? Not national stereotyping, it's actual personal experience from travelling through Italy. I've travelled through many other countries and I find Italy to be bad for casual and pervasive sexism.

Mark_K Posted June 27, 2014 #24 Share Posted June 27, 2014 At that price, I might book one room for me and one for my wife just to have the extra bathroom and space. "Live" in one cabin, sleep in the other. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

It is not a paid position and he pays for his own airfare.
