Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

5*.20=$1.00, double occupancy, $1.00*2 =$2.00 per cabin... then multiply that how many cabins he has... (and then he tips out his assistant out of that)

Wonderful news...fellow cruisers and crew will be healthier for it.

For some reason I though the tip amount was 11.80 anyway so the new price is hardly different. I just hope the increase goes to the workers and not the fat cats.

Just curious, how did smoking on the balcony affect the crew's health?

And here's another: you can no longer smoke on your balcony, and I'm happy about it.

I win, you lose.

Until you get anywhere near the casino on the promenade deck. Just a shift in territory if you ask me. Enjoy your 35 sq. ft. of smoke - free bliss.

My guess is this is a shock to find out right now and your reaction is to not book anymore cruises with them but once it settles in, you may feel differently.

It may not seem like much of a hassle to just go to the areas designated to smoking.

You do like Carnival right? When all is said and done, will you really book another line?

Based on his or her posts, I suspect he or she has never even taken a cruise.

Advance to Go! if I'm right.

Im a smoker , and if i want to smoke on the balcony i will still do it , I will just pay the $250.

I do like the idea of having one side of the ship smoking and one not

I do understand how non smokers dont like smokers , but its legal and we have the right to smoke

my 2 cents

A funny way to look at it!

Imagine the first time you're 'ratted out' (my words)by your balcony neighbors you'll be given a warning by Carnival security!

The second time you light up and are 'ratted out', maybe then you'll get the $250. fine!?(where did $250 come from?) 2 cigs=$250. you gotta like smoking at that rate!:D

I would imagine that if you light up a third time, and are again 'ratted out', (my words) you'll be lighting up on the pier with your luggage waving(single finger salute?) to all them 'RAT'(my words) non-smokers on the ship as they sail away without you!:D Now that's a really expensive cig.!

Seriously, joking aside, if Carnival makes areas non-smoking, like balconies, then it becomes illegal to smoke in those areas, and you don't have the right to smoke there! Your logic!

Not what the announcement says

Says you will be charged a $250 cleaning fee

" Guests who smoke in their staterooms or on their balconies will be assessed a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee on their Sail & Sign shipboard account. Information on this fee is included in Carnival's ticket contract."

So i will pay the $250 simple as that

That's at the time they first catch you, with a final warning. If caught again you will be subject to getting put at the pier.

From Carnival's smoking policy in the cruise contract.

I totally agree with you on this one. We're also smokers and considerate about it and don't spend most of our time on the balcony smoking. There are not a lot of places for people to smoke except for a few bar/lounges, the casino bar, and starboard side on Panorama Deck 10 for ships with 2.0 upgrades. We don't get to cruise very often, but we do love to cruise when we get a chance and love Carnival, but if they make balconies non-smoking, we'll be sticking to land vacations.

I'll probably get "flamed" for saying this, but I have the same problems (allergies, coughing, and sinus issues that trigger massive headaches) from strong fragrances that so many say they get from cigarette smoke and I know others that are affected the same way but I've never seen complaints about that on here. I just hope this is just a rumor but if it ends up being true, goodbye cruising.

Cheers from a displaced yinzer.

Just a thought.....do you think if you didn't smoke, the allergies, coughing and sinus issues might disappear? I am a former smoker and when I quit, all those problems ended.:)

HAL will be addressing this by the start of 2015. They will ban balcony smoking by either 4/1/15 or 6/1/15, I am not sure which at the moment.

I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong but isn't Hal under the ccl corporate umbrella?

Just askin' and yes I know they are individual subsidiaries

Isn't that P.P so $2 per cabin ? I agree that it isn't a lot and yet it is still too much for many tightwads.

At least the increase is contained to the immediate service staff, and not the payroll line.

Thanks Bookbug53 for the info on where the $250 came from!

Paying for a balcony becomes a waste of money with smokers around you, there is just no other way to say it! No smoking areas in a casino are a joke as the smoke goes everywhere!

We recently did a B2B/14 days in a balcony on another cruise line that has a no smoking policy on balconies, and it was great!:D

First time in over 20 years of cruising we enjoyed our balcony 100% because there was no smoking to avoid!:D

The problem is not all are considerate. On one cruise asked the "gentleman" in the cabin forward of us to simply move to the other end of the balcony. As the smoke was blowing into ours and DW can't stand it. His respond was too bad I like smoking out here my wife likes sitting our here. But she can't stand my smoking. If I move to the other end she can't enjoy balcony.

I think for every smoker promising to jump ship for another cruise line, Carnival is going to gain more in new non smoking customers, as well as new balcony bookings with their current customers who normally book inside/OV cabins.

I am sorry, but I think that most non-smokers (such as myself) really do not care. Most smokers are considerate of others, and the places where they can smoke are very limited as it is.

Carnival Corporation & plc. is the parent/holding company of many of the industry leaders. You are correct that Holland America Line is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation.

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises both answer to the newly formed Holland America Group, led by Stein Kruse, who in turn answers to Carnival Corporation.

Edit: All subsidiaries under the holding company are independently operated with their own unique leadership/executive teams.
