Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

Recommended Posts

I may be the minority here as I am a smoker and a considerate one at that...if this is true..which I am hoping it is NOT...I will be seriously re-thinking the 3 cruises that I take every year and hope other smokers do the same..may as well make the entire ship non smoking while you are at it and let's see Carnival scampering trying to fill all those ships with non-smokers and an empty casino[emoji107][emoji107][emoji107]

Ok..off my soapbox and going to happily [emoji377][emoji377][emoji377]!!!

Cheers from Pittsburgh via my iPhone!!

I totally agree with you on this one. We're also smokers and considerate about it and don't spend most of our time on the balcony smoking. There are not a lot of places for people to smoke except for a few bar/lounges, the casino bar, and starboard side on Panorama Deck 10 for ships with 2.0 upgrades. We don't get to cruise very often, but we do love to cruise when we get a chance and love Carnival, but if they make balconies non-smoking, we'll be sticking to land vacations.

I'll probably get "flamed" for saying this, but I have the same problems (allergies, coughing, and sinus issues that trigger massive headaches) from strong fragrances that so many say they get from cigarette smoke and I know others that are affected the same way but I've never seen complaints about that on here. I just hope this is just a rumor but if it ends up being true, goodbye cruising.

Cheers from a displaced yinzer.

Seriously, it would be so easy to make one side of the ships balconies non smoking. If you want a smoking room book the smoking side.....if the non smoking side fills up and your "deathly allergic to the sight of someone smoking" then book an interior room.

Pittsburgh, I agree, but it wouldn't hurt them to make 1/2 non smoking. That way, everyone can pick a non smoking balcony. I as a smoker have been saying for over a year that would be a smart idea, either way we will know for sure this week.

I'm not spinning anything around. That's the phrase Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, chose to use.

See for yourself:

Edit:

I'll just leave this one here too...

I think he said darn back in 2004 also. What does posting a link to 2011 have to do with something "rumored" to be happening now. Why turn it into a "salary" vs tip thing. Both rci and NCL charge more for tips than carnival currently does.

last post, it's late.

I can see it now; CCL announces that port side balconies are 100% non smoking and Starboard are sold as smoking optional balconies.

In 6 months the same people that want smoke free balconies will be complaining that they prefer to be on the Starboard side and when they go out on their balcony the smoke is so thick they instantly go into respiratory arrest. LOL

I've never been able to figure out how smoke can linger on a balcony when the ship is traveling at 21 knots. I think a lot of non smokers are blowing smoke themselves.

Like!

I believe you were the one who said I was spinning everything around by saying that a certain company representative claimed that the crew "deserved a raise," just like last time. Those were his words, not mine.

Obviously, I don't care what he said back in 2004. I haven't started cruising until 2009.

Sounds like this one is true. John Heald is not denying it on any of the posts sprouting up, and he's pushing that smoking will still be available in other sections of the ship.

I guess they don't see themselves as the cruise lines of smokers.

As for tips, I'll continue to use the breakdown of the steward and dining staff and tip cash.

When did he supposedly say this?

I would love the idea of having one side smoking, one side not. I think that would take care of this issue for everyone. I am not a heavy smoker at all, but I travel with my kids, and when my son goes to bed I would rather hang out on my balcony with a drink and a cig and have my quiet time, rather then having to go up to a bar or another area and leave my son alone in the cabin. He is 12, but he is also autistic, and leaving him alone isn't something I am comfortable with yet.

I have an aft balcony booked on my cruise next year, but if this policy goes into place I figure I may as well switch to an OV cabin.

I said you were spinning it by taking something current and referencing something supposedly said years ago. My point of 2004 is who cares at all what was said years ago. If they raise tips 50 cents a day it is what it is, a raise in tips is not salary but a raise in tips.

If it is true they are following royals lead (smoking), your minority view on tipping has been posted many many times.

Well, I would love to spend more time in the casino, but I don't since every time I leave there, I smell gross. Might not be as hard to fill that casino as you think. Royal and Princess have no smoking on the balconies and don't seem to have a problem

Now that this is done, maybe we can turn our attention to alcohol and gluten-free areas!

I am all for a Gluten-free-free area. A part of the ship where I can enjoy all the gluten I want without the hassle of the gluten-free pax.

i don't mind either thing happening. I don't smoke, but the people that smoke on their balconies never bothered me it was the fact they throw their cigarettes overboard that bother me, and I always tip extra anyway, so whats an extra .50 cents? big deal. its just an extra $3-4 per person per day, They deserve it....IMO anyway. I'll really believe it when I see it straight from carnival

Sadly, that may very we'll be true....however, I know 20 people who will be rethinking cruising as their vacations and I am just one person.

So when the smokers can't smoke in the privacy of their balcony, they will go to the public areas and crowd the few spots there. Not every smoker likes to smoke indoors. I do not smoke, but I have booked a balcony room just for the smoking reason. My partner went on his first cruise 2 years ago on the Magic and was enraged that there were only 3 outdoor smoking areas. 2 had chairs and tables to sit at and one was standing room only. the two sections that had tables were always packed with people and some were not even smoking in those sections. I don't see the problem with letting a smoker have their pleasure in the privacy of their own balcony. Better than doing it in public with all the asthmatic people around....

and I agree about the "old lady perfume"

"Excuse me ma'am, could you please wash off a little before continuing your stroll and fumigating the ship. We do not have a mosquito problem on board."
