Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

Recommended Posts

(wonder why the quote feature isn't working?) Anyway, I would love for the casinos to be smoke free, but understand why they aren't. However, splitting the difference and making half a cruise smoke free would be fair, just as someone suggested making one side of the ship's balconies smoke free and the other not.

The tips going up doesn't bother me at all. I pay them ahead of time, and then I pay more to the room steward, my head waiter, room service delivery and bartenders that I visit more often (and even those I don't) - and I do it often and during the whole cruise. If they go up, I may not do that as often as I have in the past (and only) 2 cruises I have taken.

Sounds like this one is true. John Heald is not denying it on any of the posts sprouting up, and he's pushing that smoking will still be available in other sections of the ship.

I guess they don't see themselves as the cruise lines of smokers.

As for tips, I'll continue to use the breakdown of the steward and dining staff and tip cash.

John said once that smoking will always have spots on the boat to one persons comment of the casino and other places. Everyone else he said he will find out and get back to us wedensday.

I have a feeling this is a TA who got wrong info.

I do like to have a cigarette before going to bed. Though we smoke, we have always been aware of people's feelings next to us. We aren't on our balconies that often. I did get offended with the strong perfumes some women were wearing on our recent cruise. I am willing to just take land based vacations instead of cruising.

Me too. And to be honest try to stop me. I hear a knock on the door, I'll fling the butt and say I smelled it too, I think it was the room below me.

I've never been able to figure out how smoke can linger on a balcony when the ship is traveling at 21 knots. I think a lot of non smokers are blowing smoke themselves.

+1

As for whomever said they'd like to see port side balconies become smoking and starboard non-smoking, that would never happen. Allotting 50% of balconies to smokers presumes 50% of your passengers are smokers. If that were true, there would be no one out with their pitchforks for the smokers.

Sadly, that may very we'll be true....however, I know 20 people who will be rethinking cruising as their vacations and I am just one person.

We have two cruises in Jan on balconies booked because we like to sit out at 6am with room service coffee ,smoke watching the sun come up. We pay extra for the balcony for smoking privilges only so like you we will be rethinking our decision. We have always used our balcony respectfully to our neighbors. So can pay less to to go to all inclusive resorts for half the price of an balcony. Love carnival and have only cruised with them.(only three cruises was doing two back to back in Jan our first time doing this but like you just told hubby and ya we will be rethinking our plans:(

Many others will also be rethinking plans.

I'm not a smoker and can tell you on my last cruise couldn't enjoy my balcony because of the neighbor who I swear if it was 2 in the morning would hear me go out and light up. I in my post cruise comments suggested they make one side smoking the other non smoking. I would be fine with that. I don't want to take smoking away from people but at the same time I don't want to constantly smell your cigarette while I am trying to eat breakfast either.

For the people rethinking cruise plans, what other cruise line, if any, would you switch to? The same cameras used to detect people going overboard might be able to detect smoking material going over. If not, perhaps they could be upgraded and more added. I think if a ship is cruising at 20 knots or so, generally smokers on balconies are too. And we have all heard, at least if you have been on a cruise, not to flick hot ash or worse over the side because it might get blown back onto the ship. Didn't Princess learn that lesson? Why would smoke be any different?

Many of us still pay for our cruises. I see no reason that we should have to be near smokers, on our balconies or otherwise. Also, many smokers reek of smoke on the elevators and in the dining room. On my last cruise on the Valor I was seated at a table for two very close to people who had recently smoked and asked to be moved. Certainly the risk of gluten cross-contamination is not something that we pay for, nor is behavior affected by the consumption of alcohol.

Smoking, per se, doesn't bother me. I grew up in a family of smokers and somehow, thankfully, I managed to end up as a non-smoker. What I hate about smokers (generally speaking, I know some of you are not included in this generalization) is when they think the world is their ash tray and just flick their cigarette butts anywhere they please.

we have two cruises booked and will be rethinking our plans also, we have 3 balconies booked side by side, if it no smoking we can go to a resort for cheaper , and enjoy ourselves just as much.

the tip increase does not bother us. we always prepay but do tip more.

I would be very sad that I could no longer take a cruise vacation. I've loved them. To spend so much money and have my enjoyment limited so much. Hopefully at least one cruise line will try or test the compromise that you all have been suggesting.

I remember when the law passed to ban smoking in all restaurants and bars, smoker's were obviously upset about it and said they would just not go out to dinner anymore. Well, they do and just go outside to smoke.

Would a smoker, that really enjoys Carnival cruise line, plan a different vacation because they couldn't smoke on their balcony? They do have areas on the ship they can smoke.

I just don't see that happening. That would be "cutting off your nose to spite your face" kind of logic?

I think eventually, all cruise lines will go this route. I just can't believe people that love to cruise AND love to smoke, would stop cruising because they couldn't smoke on the balcony.

It's true. The balcony smoking ban and increased gratuities begin October 9, 2014. I read it in a letter from Vicky Rey - Vice President, Guest Services.

And the letter is where?

With this lovely Internet letting me post anonymously, I have a letter saying that carnival is going byog. Bring your own gas, everyone must bring 25 gallons of marine diesel, don't forget it or you can't board, you must also pick up your gas can at the end of the trip or be charged an environmental fee of €250.00 they will not pay for the USD to EURO conversion fees either.

I'm tired of reading gripes about tipping. These folks take good care of us and they deserve those gratuities. They work all day and night. Are you really going to complain about an additional 50 cents?

Some may and some may not. As others have said, we too enjoy a cigarette on the balcony in the morning with coffee and one before bed at night. There are many AI's that are less expensive than it is to cruise with a balcony. We love cruising but we also love land vacations and if this is what it's going to come to, we'll take the land vacations. Since we've been on cruises, we've gotten a pretty good idea of which islands we'd like to go to and spend more time than just 8 hours or less. As for restaurants and bars, well...can't say we really patronize them very often anymore except for maybe an anniversary or birthday. It's also much more fun (and much cheaper) to get together with friends at each others' houses and enjoy an evening instead of meeting at a restaurant/bar.

We all know tips are going up a whopping 50 cents a day, and no one cares. Two people say they have letters saying smokong is out, no one will post them. I understand not wanting to get the TA in trouble, but where's the proof?
