Carnival follows RCI and others - bans smoking on balconies

We sailed FOS in May and our neighbor smoked regularly, in spite of warnings from the cabin attendant. He just waited until the attendant was on break. Was not caught in the act, so no consequences.

We heard-----supposedly on Indy someone was taken off for smoking and not abiding the rules after warnings.

 

Agree. I love being able to walk through the ship without smelling smoke.

On Radiance it was so smelly in the Centrum from the casino smoke drifting out......not nice!

During our trans-Atlantic on Legend in April, the smoke from the casino was so bad you could smell it halfway down into the theater. Nasty. :eek:

With more non-smokers than smokers, they might make more money in casino if they did prohibit smoking there b/c many non-smokers avoid the casino b/c of the smoke. Perhaps a nearby outdoor area where smokers could take a 3 minute smoke break. Make it easy for them to get to.

 

DCL has smoking only in public outdoor locations and does provide some protection from the weather in at least one area. If really harsh weather ensued, then a RCCL casino could announce smoking permitted as needed until weather better.

Smokers will just stealth-vape. It's very easy to blast away on an eCig all over the ship without getting "caught." I quit smoking years ago but when I'm drinking, I use the eCig to quell any cravings I may have that could potentially lead me down the path of temptation. With the drink package, that ends up being the better part of a week. :D

 

It's very simple to avoid detection with an eCig, you just have to make sure none of the nanny-staters see you doing it and run to security, otherwise it's completely unnoticeable.

Since the ecigarettes contain nicotine and other unspecified ingredients the jury is still out on just how "harmless" e-cigarettes actually are. I suspect that the uncertainty about their use is part of RCII's reason for banning them as well as regular tobacco products. Better safe than sorry.

I think that it's only a matter of time before smoking in the casino on RCI is banned. Celebrity started out with allowing smoking in the casino but banned it elsewhere. Within a couple of years they banned it in the casino and the casinos do well on X. I'm sure that RCI also has data on how well the casino performs on non smoking nights verses the other so that will also help in making the decision.

I don't smoke or vape and wouldn't want my kid to pick up either habit but I'll take my chances on second hand vape and throw the smokers a bone on this one. I have a feeling the fried food and desserts I eat on a cruise are more harmful for me than passing by a vape smell.

You wanted no smoking in the cabins you got that but that wasn't enough so they gave you no smoking on the balconies but no that wasn't enough either. What did you think was going to happen when they take those two choices away, its going to concentrate the smoke everywhere else. If you like Celebrity so much go on Celebrity.

Business always tries to make the max # of people happy to buy their product. What policies those are may change from 1970's to 2017 as smoker population changes. You can't please all of the people. The nonsmokers "suffered" with breathing smoke for years and now smokers "suffer" the inconvience of limited areas to smoke.

 

Neither group decided, the companies decide based on maximizing happy pax and profit.

This does not surprise me... and whether you like it or not expect all cruise lines who are members of IMO (International Maritime Organization) and participate and abide by SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) to follow suite in the near future. Or... they have the option to install extremely expensive fire suppression systems and enhanced firewalls, etc, which is nearly cost prohibitive. The reason... after the 2006 fire on the Princess Ship SOLAS outlined guidelines to prevent future such events. People still debate the origin of this fire, but no matter how that fire started, SOLAS outlined several items that needed to happen to all member cruise ships. One choice was to ban smoking on balconies... or make very expensive changes to existing structures and furnishings. It wasn't a difficult decision for most cruise lines.

Yep, the smokers will tell us these strict smoking policies are business suicide because of all the customers they'll lose. In 5 years or so when there is basically no smoking allowed on board any cruise ship, they'll all sail empty I guess :p

And who would you have making business decisions? Special interest groups aren't making those business decisions. The businesses are making them based on what they perceive to be important to most of their customers. Even if it is simply a matter of the squeaking wheel getting the oil, businesses are very concerned with satisfying their clients wishes and the growing number of complaints from the increasing number of non-smokers vs smokers among their guests has gained their attention. Expect that trend to continue. Dire predictions were made about the food and beverage industry when banning smoking in bars and restaurants was first proposed. Somehow, even during the recent recession, people still went out and ate and drank in significant numbers.

Money makes the decisions...profits in general.

Smokers must be costing the cruise lines money. That is the bottom line. No amount of complaining from any 'group' makes a difference. Dollars do.

This is how it was on our last cruise on Carnival Dream. We had never been bothered by balcony smokers on any of our other cruises, but that last one was really bad.

I could understand though I'm a non smoker, that smokers who cruise need a place to go smoke. I had suggested on after we cruised surveys that they could at least put the non smokers in an area assigned away from the smokers as far as balconies were concerned. I just have booked ocean views to save us the stress of dealing with it, though the balconies were our favorite type of cabins to stay in.

I know several very high point Royal cruisers that are now sailing on NCL. My guess is that NCL and to a lesser degree Holland got most of the former RCI cruisers.

Imagine that. Two of the cruise lines with mostly older cruisers have most of the smokers. Perhaps the misconception during their childhood of how cool smoking was still rings true to them. :p

Well I know of at least 10 people who cancelled cruises with RC when they came out with their nonsmoking policy, which by the way was not posted very well on their website. There are still many smokers in the US that would like to vacation and be treated with respect as MOST of them respect nonsmokers. Smoking on your balcony is not a health risk to any passenger. Carnival is trying this again when it failed in 2011. What should they ban next, drinking? How many drunks do you see on a normal cruise but guess that is how they make money so it is fine. As long as smoking is legal then I believe smokers should have rights as long as they are courteous and don't smoke in public areas. I have many nonsmoking friends but they believe in equality. Instead of making these drastic decisions why not find a compromise like certain balconies are smoking and certain one's are not. Guess that is too democratic, better to just make a blanket rule then reverse it in a year.
