Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

So glad to hear about the no smoking on balcony. There has been times we couldn't even sit on our balcony because so much smoke was blowing from next door. People thinking electric cigarettes are real are really stupid. My son has been a smoker for years and the electric cigarette has really helped him "almost" quit.

This reminds me of when they changed the smoking laws here in Illinois some years back. Everyone was all up in arms, accommodations were made for smokers in alternate areas and a year later it was a non issue. Hopefully it will be the same for cruise ships.

In the meantime barbs directed at other posters no matter what side of the fence you are on help no one and serve no useful purpose. The policy will not be changed by being uncivil to others in the Cruise Critic community.

With the advent of the new various cruise line policies people have very simple choices: do I want to sail under the new regulations or do I want to take my business and my dollars/pounds/lira/yen elsewhere.

Simple.

Just my .02 cents worth.

I'm very excited. So that means no smoking in the nightclubs and bars. My only disappointment is that it won't be in affect for my Oct. 19 cruise. I'm almost tempted to price a date after Nov. 1. And I also prefer Pepsi! :D

There hasn't been smoking in nightclubs and bars in years...:confused:

Well my last NCL cruise was years ago so I didn't realize that this wasn't a new restriction. Great to know.

I agree.

+1

I just called NCL, since we're on a cruise on The Star in a GV after Nov 1, and we have a few smokers travelling with us. I wanted to find out if our guests could smoke in the outdoor area of the GV.

NCL's answer: They (her and her supervisor) weren't sure. They said technically it's not a balcony (there are no balconies on The Star or Dawn's GVs). She said at the very least our guests could pay the $250 "cleaning fee" if it wasn't allowed out in the garden area if they chose to smoke. Since our guests have a ton of OBC, they may just do that.

Looks like they've left open areas on deck alone if I read that correctly. So smokers can smoke in designated areas. Thank God for that. I was concerned yesterday when it looked like they were limiting it to only the casino. The policy should be fair to all sides and if I read that correctly it appears it might be.

As long as it is a designated area per the signage

I for one applause Ncl and fully expect them to police this policy. So if you are not sitting and actively sting in the casino do not smoke

I would expect that means the seated player is the only one allowed to smoke not the spouse standing next to them at the slot machine

As I am sailing the ba I will especially expect this to be enforced. NCL I hope you are hearing this!!!!

bwhahahahah. Good luck.

"Excuse me sir, you're not allowed to smoke in here unless you're playing"

"Oh I am playing. I'm walking from this machine to that one over there"

This likely a dumb question, but I'll risk it.

Does this mean that if a passenger is willing to pay the $250.00 "cleaning fee" they can smoke in their cabins and balcony?

...and potentially be escorted off the ship at the next port.

Well I guess if they can afford last minute airfare back from Cozumel and have a passport they could try it.

You know the answer to your question is no!

no. it is against the rules and breaking the rules 'can' get you removed from the ship

this is in the contract

Guest's Agreement: The Guest agrees to abide by the rules of the Carrier, including, but not limited to, the rules and regulations particularly set forth below, and to follow the lawful instructions of the vessel's officers and crew, at all times. The Guest accepts that failure to do so constitutes a material breach of this Contract which may subject the Guest, as well as any accompanying Guest(s), to involuntary disembarkation without liability whatsoever to the Carrier for any refund or any other related loss or expense to the Guest, and any accompanying Guest(s).

That will be left up to ships Captain to decide. But my guess is they would cut it off the 1st date they can for Nov.

Wrong. It has been posted that it is for all sailing commencing on or after nov 1

That does make sense and I know my question was dumb. But it's good have it clarified. Would be a shame if someone thought that with some extra $$$ they could get around the new rules.

But it's certainly not helping if NCL's own employees are advocating breaking the rules and just paying the fee. It's giving the impression that the non-smoking rules are optional. NCL needs to better train their reservation staff if this is not their intent.
