I will continue to sail on HAL if balcony smoking is permitted.

Do you honestly think that 20 posts on a CC board that isn't even asking for a discussion is really a good indicator of consensus?

Twenty posts?????? I think the 15+ cruises on HAL that we've taken and NEVER have heard one word about smoking with the hundreds of people we've interacted with is a much better "concensus".

We've always stayed in suites, never had neighbors who smoked or heard any discussion in the Neptune Lounge, MDR or even the Meet and Greets we 've attended. To me, that's a much better "concenus".

Not only will we continue to sail HAL should the current smoking policy remain in place, but if you're near our balcony and are smoking a really good cigar, a Cuban perhaps, not one of those cheap ones, please blow the smoke my way. I love the smell of a good cigar. Who knows, I might even join you. I'll bring the scotch.

Once again, YOU posted OFF topic. I'm so sorry about your thing(s) too!

I don't have the luxury of posting to Cruise Critic 24/7 365 sitting in front of a computer as a self-appointed moderator.

Reminder once again: "I will continue to sail on HAL if balcony smoking is permitted."

Again I reiterate (staying on topic), we will continue to sail on HAL no matter what the smoking policies are. To repeat, I don't have a horse in this race as I gave up cigarettes 35 years ago. (That "satisfies" the OP's request)

Why are you letting yourself be sucked into the deep vortex of a never ending spitting contest?

I thought you were smarter than this.

The "Ignore" feature on Cruise Critic is our friend.

Keeping this thread on topic will do more to frustrate the bullies while not allowing them to divert the focus.

So far I have not been unduly bothered by smokers, when I am on my balcony. But, there have been times when I was driven inside. I booked another cruise on HAL for all the things I love about the line, so I guess my answer is yes.

HOWEVER, despite the fact that I have been inconvenienced by smokers, and by the fact that I avoid the casino like the plague due to smoking (so HAL loses my money there) YOU, even if YOU were sitting at my table every night for the entire cruise, would not have heard me complain about it. I chose to book the cabin and the line. The policy allows smoking on the balconies. I hate when people smoke on the balconies. In my way of looking at the world, that makes it my problem and complaining about it to tablemates, M&G members, or anyone else outside my immediate family and a comment on the end of cruise survey, is inappropriate.

Bottom line: don't assume that because you haven't heard people complain about balcony smoking while you are on a cruise, doesn't mean it doesn't bother them.

P.S. The first cruise I consider to have been ruined by neighboring smokers (such as my upcoming one, with eight sea and scenic cruising days) will be my last with HAL until (not unless) the policy changes.

Yikes, Mr. Frisius (best teacher, anywhere, any time) just turned over in his grave.

Should have been:

Bottom line: don't assume that because you haven't heard people complain about balcony smoking while you were on a cruise, somehow is evidence it doesn't bother them.

Amy, I never assumed that people are not bothered by smoking. I stated I've never heard one word about smoking while on our cruises. I did hear however a few people complain about perfume odors.

Several people mentioned the same thing. I was using "you" in the editorial sense. Yeah, I'd almost rather smell smoke on my balcony than perfume/cologne on my waitress or waiter. Or tablemate.

I used to have several patients (one a male) who would stink up my office and adjoining rooms for several hours after they were through with their appointment. I gently told one young lady to hold off on her perfume when she came in next time, and it was never an issue after my request.

I think the male patient bathed in his cologne. I like a nice perfume or cologne, but not in excess.

Well put - also it should come as no surprise that one might experience more comments about smoking on a CC thread dedicated to the question of continuation of HAL's smoking policy than pretty much anywhere else - including on a ship.

As statistics intrigue me somewhat I thought I’d compile some from this thread.

As of 1015pm there have been 122 posting on this thread.

Of those 122 posts, there have been 73 individual CC members.

Of those 73 CC members, 61 responded with YES, 3 responded with NO, and 9 were unresponsive to the OP choosing to use their post for personal agendas.

Of those 61 who responded with YES 31 stated they were nonsmokers and had never been bothered by smoke of their veranda.

As someone already implied earlier on this thread the “silent” have finally been given a chance to voice their opinion.

Diane many thanks for starting this thread.

Yes, I will consider cruising on HAL with their current smoking policy. I am a non smoker and I have never sailed on HAL. My wife does smoke 3 or 4 cigarettes a day and greatly enjoys her morning cup of coffee with one on the veranda. I really think that the smoking issue should be one of manners rather than regulation. Polite smokers should listen to anyone who is bothered by their smoke and work out some accommodation. Just as there may be some smokers who will rudely refuse to listen to a reasonable request, there may be some non-smokers who at the mere sight of someone smoking will be like the dog in a manger barking at a cow for eating hay. Let's treat each other with respect like adults and then perhaps the cruise line won't decide to treat us like children.

LOL! and one more response counted (is it 121 now?) after almost 3,800 views.

Edited to add..... not too many of the posts are actual responses to the statement (it's not a question, is it?) however. Many seem to be part of a vendetta going on about popularity on the board.

Thank you Lizzie68!

I gave my answer a while back. My notifications on my phone have been blowing up all day because the answer can't just be answered, so now I'm merely watching the show.

If you don't want to search for it, my answer was that smoking policy doesn't bother us, so it's not a consideration when we book a cruise. Yes, we will continue to sail with HAL regardless. Also, I believe I'm allowed to post on this thread after answering because of my yes answer.

I will continue to sail Hal with the current smoking policy. Where I live, business owners (restaurants, bars, coffee houses, cafes and clubs) are free to set their own smoking policies. It runs the gamut from "no smoking" to "smoke anywhere, anytime" and of course there are options in between with segregated smoking/no smoking sections and places that ban smoking during certain times of the day.

We all have choices. For now with cruising, I will continue to choose HAL which is my favorite cruise line, for the itineraries and the crew.

I smoke a cigarette 4 or 5 times a year. I don't know if that makes me a smoker or not, but I have never smoked on a cruise ship balcony.

I have only been occasionally bothered by smoking on HAL but then I am only occasionally bothered by it in day to day life as well. Yes, I will continue to sail on HAL and will continue day to day life too.

OP: Thanks for the thread and YES we will continue to sail with HAL. Another member of the "mostly" silent majority.

Another Thank You to the OP for starting this thread. Since I've already stated yes for myself, how about adding hubby to the "YES" only as long as the policy stays as is.

partner does and I don't but like to have evening drinks on the balcony and she will have a few smokes while drinking. We liked when they had smoking in the casino bar so she could smoke while I played and not look at what I was betting.
