Lanyards/yes or no

Trust me, it's not the lanyard or lack of lanyard that is an indication of class. We're Diamond and we use the lanyards because it's so nice not to have to carry a purse around on the ship and to have no worries about losing it and having to trek to Guest Services. I'm pretty sure that if you are judging people based on whether they wear a lanyard, there are a lot of lanyard and non-lanyard cruisers that wouldn't be impressed with you.

+/- for everything. For around the ship, especially pool area laynard was nice.. but also a drag, who wants a tan line on their chest or that thing hanging when you swim. I found it perfect for my kids, and for the adults we've always just slipped it into a pocket or held it and put it on the table.

Should the three of us each keep our key card on a lanyard? Or how about one of those wrist band type lanyard? What works best?

I have attached the kind of key ring that you pry open and slide a key on onto a long gold chain. Have a hold punched in my card, and put my card in it. I usually drop it inside my blouse or tee shirt. Just looks like another piece of jewelry unless I take it out to use the card.

Personally I think people on here who want to list each and every one of the 1,345 cruises they've been on, along with their triple diamond platinum ytterbium status.... to be far more wanky than someone wearing their card on a lanyard around their neck for convenience.

Each to their own though.

AHOY SHIPMATE,

I'm surprised that your post wasn't in GREEN, but thats your choice.

Iv'e been fortunate to have been able to do a lot of cruising around the world several times and continue to meet new interesting people because they have read my profile and either were on the same cruise or want to do a similar cruise and have questions that I can answer for them.

CRUISE CRITIC is a great forum to accomplish this. Please feel free to reread my profile as often as you like. Have a nice day.

Plz people, lets not get wacked out over a lanyard question. Anyone fortunate enough to take even one cruise is fortunate enough. In the small town in Ohio where I live there are impoverished people who will never even see the ocean much less sail on a beautiful ship to an exotic location. My coworker just buried her eight year old son this week. You wouldn't know it to look at me but I am dealing with a devastating health diagnosis. Let's keep it real here.

Cruising is a privilege and a pleasure. Many people sacrifice to enjoy a vacation like this, sometimes just once. Others have the means and opportunity to cruise often. The Cruise Critic website is a place for everyone who has savored the experience to share knowledge and comeraderie. It shouldn't be like our childhood playground where the school bully tries to take your lunch money because the bully's parents couldn't give him or her any. We're adults here. Let's all be nice.

Well said. But every time someone asks about lanyards this is what happens...so many opinions and so everyone just do whatever you want.

I was talking to a woman once who thought lanyards were required to wear around the ship......don't know where she got that idea.

People who wear baseball caps in the dining room bother me more....but then again they would say it is their vacation and they can wear whatever they want.

Anyway happy cruising to everyone.

We won lanyards on our first cruise (Celebrity) in a trivia competition and have used them ever since. Very handy when you do not have an outfit with secure pockets. We have seen cards fall out of people's pockets when they sit down in the dining room or lounges. The part that actually holds our room key is on a key ring and detaches easily from the part that goes around your neck. We also bring carbiners to clip the card holder portion to a belt loop (much less annoying than having it around your neck all the time, but still keeps the card secure). And we can just slip the card holder part into a suit jacket pocket or small handbag when we dress for dinner on formal nights.

Honestly it took me until my 3rd cruise to get it...why people wear lanyards. At first I thought the same thing. I thought people were just showing off their cards and showing off their "status" until I decided screw it I'm buying a lanyard. My favorite pair of shorts on our last cruise doesn't have pockets, I don't carry my purse and I thought to myself I'm not always with my husband and when I am I'm tired of asking him for my card out of his pocket. Buying a lanyard was the best decision ever!! Seriously. Plus I work at a hospital and I'm used to having a card constantly attached to me that I swipe a bazillion times a day :)

For women, even the pants/shorts that have pockets have pretty much unusable pockets. I will use the really dorky retractable badge holders (I get them as freebees all the time and then clip the holder onto my waistband and then put the card in one of the otherwise too shallow pockest. This way if (when) the card falls out it is "leashed" to me. As others have done, I use the quick release type attachment for easy access when I need to hand it over.

The only time I didn't use a lanyard was during formal nights. If I didn't want it hanging out I just tucked it inside my shirt. Having a lanyard certainly made keeping track of my sea pass...no digging around pants and bags looking for one credit card shaped thing. It was hanging by the door or it was hanging around my neck.

Oh, okay...I'll admit it. I had lots to different lanyards. Most of them really dramatic rhinestone covered ones. When the bartender had three or four sea passes in hand, I always knew which one was mine!

I actually got a lanyard with a small waterproof container just big enough for my sea pass, some cash and an ID....it was perfect to keep track of my stuff during beach/snorkeling excursions where I'd need cash on the beach.

My husband & I both use lanyards. He wraps the lanyard around his card and puts it in his pocket. He says it makes it harder for card to fall out of his pocket or for him to accidentally pull it out and drop it when he is getting something else out of his pocket. I carry a very small purse. I wrap the lanyard around my card also and put it in my bag. Makes it easier to find in my bag. We do put it around our neck when we get in line to get off ship as it is readily available when we get to the crew member logging us off the ship. We then put it away.

Did it on our wedding cruise just since we were right there with the wedding coordinator and got lanyards as part of our give aways, never done it since, didn't find it useful and people kept asking us if we were part of an onboard convention/junket of travel agents since they all had the same lanyards.

Ive though about using one of the belt hook lines i get at Casinos, but never remember to bring them.

Hi! This is a great idea, and I have been looking around for a small waterproof container for some time now! Is there one you'd recommend????? :-)

G'day, can't see what the problem is with wearing the lanyard. I'm not self conscious about wearing it and on our cruise the majority of passengers were wearing them. Was speaking to one gentleman who said he was having lots of trouble with his seapass becoming inactive when carrying it in his pocket with other cards etc. Guest Services suggested he use a lanyard and he had no further problems.

People who wear lanyards lack class and etiquette? Are you kidding? You might need a refresher on the concept of class and etiquette. While you're reading up on those distant, lofty, concepts, I might suggest a reading on humility and grace. Your reply to this post suggests you might be handicapped in those realms.
