cruzer9 Posted August 17, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2014 WOW WOW WOW We are just off the Silver Discoverer and what a journey. This was our first trip onboard, booked it while onboard the Silver Explorer in Antarctica last year. This was only our second Silversea trip, both expeditions, and i do not think we will ever do anything else again. Here is our short review. Ship: Smaller and definitely more casual than the Silver Explorer. The first impression of the ship is OK not WOW, but you soon fall in love with her. A warm atmosphere with good public room, and very good suites. Smaller than Explorer but very well equipped. We were in a View Suite, more than enough space. Did look into the Veranda suites and probably will book that in the future. Large and very good size balcony. Crew and Staff The crew were fantastic! Some of the best service - better than what we experienced on Seabourn and on Silver Explorer. Expedition Staff We were once again luck to have Conrad and Daniil lead the team. We had them in Antarctica. The rest of the team were terrific. We learnt so much from them onbaord the ship and ashore. Love the idea that the staff dined with us on a regular basis. Really enhanced the trip for us. Food Not too fussy about food so maybe not the best to judge this but it was very very good. Spoke to a few people onboard and heard them say it was some of the best they have had in recent years on Silversea. Itinerary Have to say when Conrad convinced us to take this trip we were not 100% sure. We were considering Svalbard on the Explorer instead. We are SO happy we listened to him . It was AMAZING; from fishing for Salmon, Kamchatka Brown bears, salmon run, after dinner landing on the beach with champagne and a bonfire, thousands of walrus, incredible hikes, reindeer herders, remote villages. Truly spectacular ! Antarctica was spectacular and i will never forget it, and it will remain up there as the best trip ever, BUT this trip is probably the 2nd best we have ever done. We traveled to Kamchatka and Chukotka where we really were the only people. Conrad and the Expedition team warned us at the beginning of the trip that they were not going to follow the itinerary as advertiesd. Was a bit skeptical but each day they surprised us with incredible wildlide and some days interesting cultures. We traveled with Ralph - the Avid Cruiser and we were following his video blogs. A link is here. http://avidcruiser.com/livevoyagereports/expedition/russias-far-east-silver-discoverer/ All I can say is the ship is great, small comfortable and really homey, and the itinerary was spectacular. Now looking to the next trip. But which one? According to Conrad the ship will go to Myanmar, South India and Indian Ocean in 2016..... might just have to go.... After our first trip on the Silver Explorer ( then the PAII) we were hooked on Expedition cruising and Silverseas too. Good to see Conrad coming up with some new destinations - you just might see us on that 2016 cruise too. :D

Rare RachelG Posted August 17, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 17, 2014 Thanks for the report. I am glad to hear that discoverer seems to be worth its relatively high price point!
Rare Fletcher Posted August 18, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 18, 2014 Thanks for the report. I am glad to hear that discoverer seems to be worth its relatively high price point! As soon as you cross over into Expedition cruising the price effectively doubles because you are paying for the uniqueness of the destinations and the expedition team which might be 9-12 additional highly trained staff. Glad you liked the Discoverer - we remember her as the Clipper Odyssey and went across the South Pacific aboard her. Not as smart then as now, perhaps, but a lovely ship.
