Ashes to Ashes

She (the OP) has never been on a Royal Caribbean cruise. She had her first one booked for next summer. No one seems to be posting on her roll call. Perhaps she just got frustrated with that.

But the point of her post here and her real reason for cancelling are both mysteries to me.

Don't all the ships have a cigar lounge?

No, only the Voyager/Freedom class ships have a cigar lounge. I don't think it would be large enough if all the smokers were forced to use it instead of the casino.

Oh, don't "go there", Bob. I have heard from MANY cigar smokers, on CC and on board, who HATE when cigarette smokers come into the Connoisseur Club to smoke!

As funny as it may seem to a non-smoker, many cigar smokers HATE cigarette smoke!

Hmmm... I used the casino and just moved from the slot machine I was on when a smoker sat down. I didn't find the smoke that overwhelming. There are great machines at the end of the casino near the bar down there - I play them and don't smell much smoke. I enjoy the slots, so I play. If you play earlier in the day on sea days, there aren't many smokers there (there weren't last week, anyway). I had a good time! And I've NEVER smoked... ;)

I've heard that too, about the cigar smokers hating the cigarette smoke.

I wish RCI would ban all smoking. On my 8-22 sailing on EN, I was out on the balcony and the person in the next cabin was smoking on her balcony. Then in horror, I watched as she flicked the cig overboard. It was dark and I could watch the thing glow even hotter as the breeze fanned the butt, and it got blown back against the ship. I don't know if it blew back onto the promenade deck or a lower balcony. But I could follow it all the way down until it was out of sight by the side of the ship. When we left the ship at the end of the cruise, I told the cabin steward what happened and he said I should have told him. He said he could smell smoke in the room but couldn't find proof. They are instructed to confront the offending smoker. It would have come down to my word against hers.

Even on say, Deck 4 starboard, I think, maybe Port, when the ship is moving, the smell of smoke is there. Might depend on the prevailing wind but on the Freedom a couple of weeks ago, if you are a non smoker, deck 4 smelled, that smoke did not ruin my cruise, I could get away from it.

I can understand RC's position on making places for smokers to go.

I still wonder why people smoke and put their health, potentially in harms way.

...and there are gaming areas that are designated as non-smoking - but I don't believe that smoke can read and it tends to ignore the signs and goes where it wants to. ;) Our experience since 1/1/14 agrees with yours regarding it becoming a smoking lounge.

:D Funny! And just a thought, but what if smoking in the casino was limited to e-cigs only? That seems to be a decent compromise.

From looking at their prior posts, they are diamond and this would have been their second time on the Freedom. The poster is actually a former host on CC and is moving back to this screen name.

I would've reported her for tossing her cig overboard, period. Here's a haunting three minute video of Star Princess, after the 2006 fire that was likely caused by a cigarette on a balcony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFr6OF8eneg.

I for one will enjoy the multitude of non smoking areas on my ship, avoid the casino which is a money waster anyway, while the op is at home enjoying non smoking areas alone in their house. How sad for them :(

Friend was on another line with her e-cig, or something like that, she said she was vaping. I don't understand all that stuff.:o Anyway, whatever it was that she had looks nothing like a cigarette and the person next to her starting coughing and covering her nose, etc. Sometimes things are just the power of suggestion.;)

I just returned from the 8/24 Freedom sailing. We had mid ship deck 9 junior suites. I was out on the balcony, reading on a sea day and realized that I smelled smoke. And not just a whiff...it was definitely strong enough to make me get up and look all over to try and locate the balcony from which it was emanating. Could not locate it, but went inside, as I did not want to sit out there with the smell of smoke disturbing my reading time.

And I did notice the casino was much smokier than previously. And as Bob mentioned, I had heard that smoking in the casino was limited to those playing. Well, let me tell you, you could point out all of the people using the casino as their personal smoking location. And saying that we should move machines when someone nearby was smoking is not what we want to do, as my mom liked a particular machine and having someone standing right next to her smoking made it unpleasant.

I have to say on Enchantment of the Seas it became very frustrating.... If you were on a certain deck (I'd have to pull up the plans but either 5 or 6) and wanted to go from dining to a show, you HAD to pass through the casino or change floors, cross the ship to the other stair case, and change floors again. Anyway, the casino was right in the middle of the floor. Often times young kids were passing through to go to the theatre. Me and my husband are nonsmokers and it got pretty aggravating. Not to mention the smoke was definitely wafting out of the casino into other areas, not like it has doors lol

I was kind of thinking, it would have made sense to put the casino at the end of the ship or even in an area by itself like the fitness center and lounges if the smoking is that bad there and it can be a health hazard to others. Of course that would make it less traveled and maybe less used?

I'd hate to be someone with a disability who couldn't be around smoke and had to take the elavator one floor to cross the ship and take the elevator back, doh.

We go outside on the promenade deck on Enchantment to bypass the casino.

Oh no, there's a reason it is where it is. You don't plan dinners and shows around each other and stick a casino in between the two on accident :D

We have been spoiled by the non smoking Celebrity casinos. We have not been on Royal in a few years and will be boarding the Allure on Sunday for our first trip on a mega ship. I applaud the new nonsmoking balconies and I am hoping the casino is not a total smokehouse as I like to gamble. Cruising is one of the few times a year I get to go to a casino,(and why we don't sail Disney) but if it is too smoky, I will be bringing my gambling money home with me.
