luvtovaca Posted July 9, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Only post I can find on this goes back to 2008 and our most recent cruises were with Carnival...Do the NCL room key cards come with a hole for lanyard use or will guest services punch a hole if you ask? And if not are they thin enough to use a standard hole punch if I pack one?
Leavethekidswithmom Posted July 9, 2015 #2 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Guest services will punch it for you.
sstande Posted July 9, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 9, 2015 We were on the 5/30 Getaway cruise, and our key cards did NOT come with a punched hole. We did bring a standard hole punch and we did punch all of our cards (5 of us). It was not easy, but as long as you have someone with some arm strength, it will be possible. katie'smommy Posted July 9, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 9, 2015 We just got back from a week on the Getaway and the cards did not come pre-punched, but there were hole punchers at guest services for that purpose. They were set aside so you don't need to wait in line - just make sure you don't put a hole through the magnetic strip on the back!

don't-use-real-name Posted July 9, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Hole should be punched at the opposite end used to insert the card in the door slot. It will be simple in that the lanyard will not get tangled with the key hole in the door. AND "Do Not Punch anywhere near the magnetic strip" ! Best to have "Guest Services" at the Registration desk do it. Have card and lanyard attached by a snap clip - so you don't have to remove the lanyard from your neck to use the card. Everywhere you go the card is swiped through machinery to go on and off the ship. Buy something in the gift shop - dine in a restaurant (not the buffet) - order drinks beverages - purchase a shore excursion - etc. Make it easy to use the card without hanging yourself from a yardarm. 23words Posted July 9, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 9, 2015 When we got on the Getaway last November, I asked if they could do it for us right when we got them at check-in and they did it immediately.

LOL Thank you. Yes, I know all that, we have cruised before. Just didn't know if NCL would punch them for us as our most recent cruises have been with Carnival. Cruise_More_Often Posted July 9, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 9, 2015 I bought a lanyard in the gift shop, and the clerk punched a hole in the key card for me.
outtabux Posted July 10, 2015 #10 Share Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) We have always done the lanyards with the plastic holders on them. Do you think the plastic holder is necessary/worth the hassle of taking it in and out, or just hole punch it? Do you swipe your card for room entry or just hold it close to the sensor? We will be on the Jade. Edited July 10, 2015 by outtabux
Heather1972 Posted July 10, 2015 #11 Share Posted July 10, 2015 I bring my own hole puncher and do all our cards while waiting to board the ship.

We will be on the Jade. I don't know about the NCL JADE but the STAR DAWN and SUN you insert the card into a slot near the door handle. A small light flashes green - withdraw the card and open the cabin door. No sensor involved. Maybe the new xxxx-away class ships have a different system ? The JADE has been around a while - would guess that it has the conventional insert in slot system. If you are wearing the card on a lanyard unless you unclip it - you would have to lean over a bit to put the card in the slot - the plastic holder would just be a nuisance unless there is a sensor system. Plan on unclipping the card everytime you go on and off the ship and any purchases made in the gift shop or photo gallery otherwise you will have to get very close up and personal with the card reading machinery ! cruisenfreak Posted July 10, 2015 #14 Share Posted July 10, 2015 As said front desk, shops and casino all will punch a hole for you. No need to pack a hole punch. I take the clip lanyard for around the ship and hand over the lanyard and card when purchasing something. I also use the sleeve type if I'm just going ashore and walking near the port. I add my driver's license, a few dollars, and my credit card to the sleeve. Then I drop the sleeve down my shirt - hidden and hands free.

The logo is barely visible, but we were wondering the same thing.

cruisenfreak Posted July 13, 2015 #24 Share Posted July 13, 2015 Our lanyards are from Princess. To return to our ship we got in the HAL Maasdam tender line on Grand Cayman last December and the lady in front of us turned around and told my husband he was in the wrong line. We quickly realized she was looking at his lanyard. We all had a good laugh and talked with this couple all the way back to the ship. Any lanyard will work, also any logo shirt or hat will too although we have had some interesting comments from staff on board some ships. We just laugh.
