Carnival magic air conditioning

Recommended Posts

Hello. We are considering a cruise on the Carnival Magic in September. The only thing holding us back are the reports of insufficient air conditioning in the cabin. Does anyone know if this still an issue? I would like to be able to cool the room to 70 degrees. I read somewhere that 74 to 76 is Carnivals standard. That will not meet our needs.

Thank you.

It may very well vary by cabin but I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that our cabin would get MUCH cooler than 74-76. I didnt have a thermometer but turned all the way down Id say more like 68-70. It actually felt a little cold one night. We were all the way forward in a 4J #10204. I didnt notice any AC problems anywhere on that ship.

If you are in a balcony cabin, its gonna depend on if someone close to you is leaving their balcony door open. People dont realize that when they do this, it affects a whole block of cabins as far as AC goes.

We have found that the location of the cabin (and the type of the cabin) to be a significant factor in the temperature of the room. We do brig a small thermometer and measure this (the DW thinks I am way to anal on this). If your room is at the end of the run (no way to determine this that I know of other than asking the support people that come to look at it if we had an issue and contacted GS) then the room might be 2 to 3 degrees warmer then other rooms.

The type of room van play into it as well. Suites as example have additional space (and additional cooling vents). In the non suite area, we have found that aft wraps have more also. These give you more cool air so the rooms will be cooler. Just my 2 cents....

I have to agree with ryano. We just sailed the Magic in late May, and except for embarkation day, found the AC to be very cool-cold at night in the cabin. The Promenade was also very cool most of the time.

Keeping the curtains closed when you are not in the cabin also helps out a lot!:)

We had a cove balcony which was shady most of the time, so if you are heading South, I recommend a cabin (any type, except inside) on the Starboard side, but be aware the mid-late afternoon sun will be an issue with the temp in the cabin.

On the return trip heading North, you will have morning sun, which is much cooler, but still affects the temp in the cabin. Curtains closed again, helps a lot!

Hope this helps!

If you feel there is a problem with the AC, we found the Magic crew and staff to be very helpful with any of our requests for service or help. IIRC, we had a TV/Interactive video issue which was resolved within minutes of the report to GS/Housekeeping:).

We were on Magic last July in a spa balcony all the way forward starboard. This particular spa balcony did not have a roof above it on the balcony. Because of this lack of shade, the room was just a bit warmer than 70F, but keeping the curtains closed most of the time solved the problem.

The other thing to know is that if you want a fan, go to Guest Services when you board and request a fan for your cabin. They do have them! Also, if the duvet on the bed is too heavy, your cabin steward can bring you a thin blanket instead.

We were in cabin 10215 on the Magic last week. Our cabin temp fluctuated a lot. It never got as cool as we would have liked even with keeping most of the lights off. I thought the promenade was warm a lot of the time as well as the Lido Marketplace.

We were also on a cruise at the end of May in a balcony room on Deck 8. Our room never felt really cool until 2 or 3 in the morning. We packed a light fan and it helped a good bit. We kept out curtain closed during the day as well. It really depends on cabin location and the time of year you are sailing.

We sailed the Pride last year, and the only negative of a wonderful cruise was the air conditioning. The whole ship often felt warm, and our cabin temp ranged from was barely comfortable to too warm (when you break into a sweat just sitting in your cabin, the cabin is too warm!). I was hoping that this was a once off, and would not be an issue in future cruises. We are sailing in the Magic soon, and have an L-shaped aft balcony. Fingers crossed that our cabin will be cool!

We were on the Lido room 10270 on the May 21st sailing. Our room stayed cool to cold. We had to adjust the temp up a few times. We both thought the whole ship was colder than usual.

We were on the April 30th cruise had three staterooms, balconies forward of the ship, took a thermometer and it never went down lower than 73 and that usually was around 5-8am only. I have to say it averaged 75 in all cabins and too warm for us we complained and fans were given to us but it was still warm for us, didn't sweat but got no quality sleep.

We just got off the Magic Saturday and my ONLY complaint was the insufficient air conditioning!!!!!!! It was way too warm in our cabin and also in all the common areas, exceptions were the main dining rooms and the show theater and spotlight lounge. My entire family complained about our cabins air not working!!! It may be the location of the cabins, and if that's true, I will start choosing my cabin number. We were on the 1st floor and our temp was always 73.6 or so. They told us that was NORMAL, I assured them that it was NOT NORMAL for us. I did leave them a very bad survey yesterday about the non use of air conditioning on the ship. I can remember past cruises were I felt like I froze all week, which I'd much rather be too cool than be hot! I still LOVED the cruise, ANY cruise is better than work, but it made me not very happy with the Magic. They will let you borrow a fan for your cabin though, so that does help some.

I have been bringing my travel fan and it does help. I am always kicking off that heavy comforter and just use the sheet.

A couple of things about the Magic.

First, cabins on that ship will have a slot for your card to keep lights and AC on. You don't have to use your S&S card any card will do even a business card. I left one of my Business cards in the slot the entire time. I know it defeats the purpose, but with the AC off with direct sun i found it almost impossible for the AC to get the temperature back down by itself.

Second, if you in a balcony and it has gotten too hot and you want to cool it down really quick, try this. Prop your balcony fully open followed by opening your cabin door for at least 30 seconds. Then close your balcony door first followed by your cabin door. The outside hallway is designed to be a positive pressure area and from my experience always slightly cooler than I can ever get the cabin. This will flush all the hot air(and any lose papers if your not careful) outside. My wife also insists I do this after I, um, use the facilities.

I didn't know that the card slot controlled the AC - I thought it only controlled the lights. If this in fact is true - I really appreciate the heads up. I always turn the lights out when leaving the cabin anyway so it wouldn't hurt for me to leave a card in the slot. For sure I will leave the card in if it controls the AC.

Also, thanks for the "open the doors" tip. Never thought to do this & I have been in some pretty warm balcony cabins.

.

I used an old hotel card key I found in my suitcase.

Im a very hot natured person that lives in, drives in and works in the AC. I never had any complaints whatsoever about AC problems anywhere on Magic.

Looking back on it, I'm not 100% sure the switch did control the AC. However, it would make since seeing as it takes much more electricity to run an AC that it does to power the lights. I'm sure someone will correct me if I wrong:-)

Took the behind the fun tour on Dream a few years ago. They explained that the ships don't have traditional air conditioning like in our homes. They said if they did, it would take another ship being pulled behind to hold the amount of air conditioning equipment you'd need. Instead, they basically run cold water (or warm) through pipes and blow air over them. That is why it just has a colder/warmer adjustment in your cabin. You don't have much control.

It's called a chilled water system. If you don't cool the chill water enough, the room temps will not cool down. In a building system, you set the leaving chill water to 42 degrees. You want the air coming out the vent to be 55 to 57 degrees. :)

I have been on the Magic 3 times. I am always so annoyed with myself that I don't think to take a thermometer so I can answer this question, that comes up a lot. At home we keep the ac at 70, daytime, 60 at night. So, if I had been too warm I would certainly remember that. We have always booked Lido balcony 10271. The hot or cold natured thing, eh, when it's hot I'm hot, when it's cold I'm cold. I find the inside venues, theaters, MDR, etc... chilly and bring a sweater. Land based casinos are cold to me. I just made a note to myself to bring something to actually record the room temp on next cruise. I just know if the room had been warmer than 70, I would have remembered it, as I would not been able to sleep. I think as others have said it must depend on your cabin location. My parents have had to ask for a fan on every cruise they have taken. But they book all over the place, last one was 9320, another one was 6223. We found what works for us and stick with it. Have a great cruise!:)

  • 1 month later...

We went on the magic 5/21/16 and the room was miserable. I complained and they got me a big fan which was okay but just circulated warm air. I complained again and then one more time before the lady came out with the temp probe. She said it was warmer than it should be so they would fix it. It did help some but it was still warm, just not as warm as It was. My sister was right next door and her room was frigid.
