Strange question from a first time cruiser!

Hi,

I am going on the Harmony in 20 days to the Med. I know its going to be super hot outside when walking around the ports.

However i was wondering, as i have never been on a cruise ship before, what the temperature is like inside the ship and if it is windy on deck when the ship is moving?

I know it seems like a strange question but i suffer with what is basically an allergic reaction to the cold. This means that when in cooler temperatures my skins erupts in hives wherever and whenever it is exposed and i feel like i have loads of needles pricking my skin. (Not pleasant in British winter!)It is harmless but it doesn't look very pleasant.

It can also happen when i have been sweating and it is windy and in a pool.

The reason i was asking is that i have mainly sleeveless tops but am unsure whether i will need something on my arms for when i am inside etc.

Thanks

Elaine

Yes, it can be windy out on the decks when the ship is moving

I would bring a shawl or something. I can't determine if what I think is comfortable to me, would be too cool for you. It can get down right cold inside the ship at times.

Congrats on your first cruise Elaine!!! I have found that no matter what ship, what itinerary, what time of the year, you should always bring a sweater/hoodie/shawl. Even if it is 100 degrees outside, many times the theaters, dining rooms and other venues on the ship can be chilly. Always nice to know you can warm up your shoulders and arms.:)

The wind will be similar to the wind when you stick your hand out of a moving car. If the ship is moving at 20mph, that's generally how much wind you will feel on deck, though there are some outside decks that are glass enclosed, so the wind is moderated. Some folks feel that the public spaces are too cool, but that is usually because they are not at capacity, with the designed number of bodies generating warmth, and also because the humidity in the air conditioned spaces is very low. You would do well to have light and medium sweaters or sweatshirts to cover up with.

This isn't a strange question. A strange question would be, what do you do if you see a mermaid ...

Is it windy on deck. On the pool deck, not really. Typically the pool deck is one deck below the top deck, so it is completed surrounded by the ship's structure or windows. It is open on top, but since there is nowhere for the air to go, it is not very windy on the pool deck.

The top deck usually has wind breaks (Plexiglas dividers or wind screens) but it is still usually windy.

Inside the ship is keep cool (I would guess 68 Fahrenheit or about 20 Celsius). Some people find it chilly at night inside the ship.

Interesting. I had to look it up.

Cold urticaria (ur-tih-KAR-e-uh) is a skin reaction to cold. Skin that has been in contact with cold develops reddish, itchy welts (hives).

The severity of cold urticaria symptoms varies widely. Some people have minor reactions to cold, while others have severe reactions. Swimming in cold water is the most common cause of a whole-body (systemic) reaction. This could lead to very low blood pressure, fainting, shock and even death.

Cold urticaria occurs most frequently in young adults. And it generally clears up within a few years. If you think you have this condition, consult your doctor. Treatment for cold urticaria usually includes taking antihistamines and avoiding cold air and water.

This is just another example how handicaps are not easily seen or understood when people make judgements on others.

Inside the ship it is cold, really cold! It's freezing cold ... we cruised on Carnival Fascination (Southern Caribbean itinerary) in June, and I was happy that I had a sweater and a shawl with me, otherwise it would have been impossible to go to the theatre, dinner etc ... but, also I think it depends on how well you're used to being in an air-conditioned environment! We're Canadian and we couldn't take the a/c, but on the other hand, all the Americans were in their shorts, flip-flops, and t-shirts. In the evening, we always went to the deck to warm up :)

Enjoy your cruise ... we loved it ;)

Have done one south pacific cruise only...always found the MDR cold (was never without a jumper & dressy scarf at dinner) and found the theatre so unbelievably cold I went once, had to send my Dad back to the cabin for our heavy jackets that we'd needed starting out from Melbourne - but even with two jackets, I had to leave as I was blue and shivering by halfway through (ridiculous, considering it was 30-ish celcius out on deck  )

Since you're going to be in the Med make sure you take something to cover your shoulders when you get off the ship if you will be going to places where that is required (churches, etc.).

I know two people with your allergic condition. They were stunned when they met someone else with the condition as they had never heard of anyone else having it. I am VERY close with one of them.

Bring a sweater or something similar. The dining rooms can be chilly.

The open deck is indeed windy while the ship is moving.

Let me add that for the ladies skirt and shorts hemlines must be over the knee and that you might be refused entry if you're dressed in very tight revealing outfits. As mentioned head, shoulders and upper arms will need to be covered when visiting churches, etc.. Men wearing shorts will not be allowed in most churches nor will men in sleeveless T-Shirts. If you're looking for James Bond while in Monte Carlo you're going to need a sports jacket to visit the casino. I think (not sure) that jeans are a no, no too. As you can see dress codes in the Med are [quite] a bit different than what we are used to.

My husband and I are taking our family on the Norwegian Dawn in December. Our package includes excursions. Is is best to book through the cruiseline for tubing through the caves in Belize or private booking? This is our first cruise.

I would book privately, probably with Victor Bodden.

We've done it twice, both through the ship. First time, they had inner tubes and a local provided food. Second time they had big tubes designed for dragging kids too lazy to learn how to water ski and they had a pavilion filled with awful food.

I thought Bodden was in Roatan?? I thought that Harvest Caye in Belize was not going to have tours other than NCL tours?

Elaine- the cabin heating has been great on every ship, for us... if you feel the cold, nip into the cabin and move the heat up a few notches, and you'll soon feel warm. This was essential on an RCI ship once in Norway, when we had snow.

I have a friend with this condition. In teacher's college we did our school placements and part of that was being outside on yard duty (Canada, winter etc). She explained to her placement supervisor (head teacher) her condition noting it would be best for her to not have yard duty. They rolled their eyes and said she had to if she wants to be a teacher, essentially "suck it up it isn't that cold". Out she went. Recess ended, in she came. The teacher sent her home for the day and made it clear she was not to do yard duty again. Until you see it first hand it really does sound made up! The reaction to cold is not pleasant!
