Researching for a cruise I see the DO cabins have an obstructed view

Are all of them on deck6 obstructed? is it just the tops of the lifeboats? can you see past them while sitting on the Balcony?

We had a DO (6566) and didn't care for it at all. The life boat came halfway up, so you could only see the water while standing, and not at all while sitting. (It was only $50 more than an inside, so I guess being able to have some view and some air was better than not at all for the small price difference.

I was quite concerned as we booked a DO bal. You can see everything if you stand up, but sitting down you you could look at deck 5, the life boats were in the way. We loved these rooms!! and will def book them again!!

The night breeze and watching the stars with a glass of wine was perfect.

Book it Danno!! :):)

You will find, even with a full view, you will do your "ocean gazing" while standing at the rail. Even without a lifeboat there, the "sitting" view is not the best. The glass gets awfully smeary and smudged from the sea spray.

Check out of rooms at the front of the ship on deck 7 or 8 if they are available. We have 7512, 7514 and 7110 booked and they are all "porthole" obstruction balconies. The metal hull of the ship surrounds the corners of the balcony. There's a few youtube vids of cabin tours if you look around.

Here is a shot of the starboard side three deck 7 and two deck 8 DO balconies at the front of Anthem. Port side have the same DOs at the front on deck 7 and 8.

Oh Ok.. Thanks

Any issues with those?

Keep an eye out for a balcony guarantee (cat X) on the Anthem. Sometimes they are less expensive than an obstructed balcony (cat DO) and the one we were assigned, a D7 was not obstructed.

It was way to far forward for our taste. We called and they moved us aft. No problem as long as they had one available in the same category (D7).

Thanks everyone

we are thinking about booking an X GTY as it is about $400pp cheaper than booking a regular balcony.

Knowing we might get assigned a DO

Is there a list of good or bad DO balconies for the Anthem?

If you search cc going back about 12-18 months there were a couple of very long discussions on DO's on Quantum. They had lots of pictures and showed which had the most and least obstructed views. Some cabins were virtually unobstructed. Since Anthem is virtual copy of Q, same should still apply.

As has been stated, the porthole DO's on decks 7 and 8 aren't really obstructed. Also, note that several on deck 6 have oversized balconies. These are covered and allow you to see around any obstruction. We were recently in 6162 and had no issues. Just be careful to stay away from the DO's toward the rear of the starboard side of deck 6 as they are right above the outdoor smoking lounge.

This is my deck 6 davit position deckplan I did while on our last March Anthem cruise.

Avoid the cabins with davits in front. Also the port hole view DO balconies at the front on deck 7 and 8 have very good views.

Note that the shorter arrows rearward of the starboard hump indicate the shorter davits for the one smaller lifeboat there.

Hi Jon. This, by NO means, means it will happen to you. This is what happened to one of my sons and girlfriend.

We all booked more than a year ago for October, Anthem. One of my sons did not think he could go, but turned out he could. Prices were through the roof in March and they went the cheapest way possible. They booked an Obstructed Balcony Guarantee. He was assigned his cabin 2 weeks after booking and got a D7 on deck 10. YIPEEEEE No obstruction, the lucky stiff. Last week, with the new promo, there was a $626 PRICE DROP. If he wanted the price drop, he had to go back into the pool for Obstructed Guarantee. He said yes. (the money was more important to him). Guess what? One HOUR later, he was assigned D7 Deck 10 again. LOL. :) I know it is a gamble, but I guess you just have to decide what is the most important to you. Good luck.:):):)

We had an X Gty for both of our Anthem cruises we did this past winter.

For the first one which was in January we got a deck 10 D7. :)

For the second,, which was in March, we were assigned a very obstructed DO balcony even though the day we got our assignment about 20 balcony cabins, most were higher than Cat. DO, became unavailable for selection. We suspected many others got their guarantee assigned that day. When we call to get our DO balcony switched to another DO location I mention the above and that I thought we had priority for an upgrade as C&A D+ members.

We were told that D+ benefit doesn't apply with guarantee assignments as this is done by the RCI computer system without C&A status being taken into consideration.

You're diagram has the davits in a little different position than the link you posted. Cabins 6186, 6200, 6214, 6586,6600, and 6614 are all showing between the davits in the link. I've seen pictures of the view of some of these cabins an they are between the davits with a view to the sea.

The first davit location deck plan I posted in that link, in post 21, wasn't done by me. It was one I found here on CC.

The second one I had in post 27 is the same as the above as I linked to the same photo in my Photobucket account. I did that deck plan by counting balconies and noting lifeboat and davit positions from deck 5 while on Anthem in January, not our March cruise as mentioned above.

Here is a view between two davits and there isn't a lot of space between them for a view between especially if your balcony is far away from the lifeboats with the promenade deck 5 walkway between your balcony and the boats in the narrower mid-ship sections.

There are 6 sets of davits that are spaced further apart. Here are pictures of the view from 6586.

If you look closely at my davit deck plan it shows that the first three together pairs of lifeboat davits at the front on either side are slightly further apart. It's still not a great view as shown in your attached thumb nail shots. There are still two davits basically in front of the balcony for cabin 6586 obstructing its view.

All it takes is the use of a little zoom with a camera and standing back a bit in the cabin from the balcony in order to make the view appear to be better and these shots appear to me to be zoomed in ones some what.

The shot in my post, # 23, above is of the davits between the first, #2, and second, #4, port side lifeboats so they are in front of the balconies for cabin 6172 and 6174 thus are one pair of the further apart side by side davits.
