Trivia/Quiz

We're something of trivia/quiz nuts, and itinerary allowing we'll go to many of them onboard.

On the Navigator earlier this month, we hit something of a purple patch, at one point winning 4 on the bounce ( morning, early afternoon, late afternoon and evening).

Now it's not for the prizes ( came home with a dozen pens, four highlighters, four keychains, eight bags-in-bags four zipper pulls and two baseball caps) but for the taking part and adding to the otherwise useless knowledge in the little grey cells.

One day however, getting the paper and pencil to take part , one elderly lady said that we shouldn't be allowed to take part, as we keep winning!

I was dumbstruck!

What do you other trivia nuts think?

I participate in Learned League and enjoy good competition for enjoyment.

I will no longer participate in onboard trivia, as on shipboard it is a blood sport. When I see people "recruiting" for specialties and "we need a Brit" and the like, I say enough is enough. Especially as the ships get larger, the groups become less fun and more cutthroat.

If you still enjoy it, continue. If it becomes tedious or contentious to where it isn't an enjoyable part of your day, give it up. Listen to the comments as answers are given - if you hear "they left out the plural" or the like, you know the pettiness has reached critical mass.

Too many other things to do to enjoy your holiday.

Thanks Flyertalker, I am tending to agree about the cutthroat bloodsport element. Haven't witnessed 'specialist' recruitment but some of the anguish over whether a variant on the answer is acceptable or not is amazing.

It's a game for a cheapo prize for goodness sake!

(I did like Joff Eaton on the Independence saying "by all means use your smartphones to Google the answer......if you're that desperate to win a keychain, go ahead"!)

Last cruise we (sis and I) played 60's musical trivia with Kelvin Joy. That guy is so much fun I would not have cared if I got every answer wrong. We laughed and laughed. However, we did win. He brought us a bottle of sparkling wine. Not bad.

He would play a snippet of a song and you had to write down the title and the singer. We got 40 out of 42. For one answer we wrote "The New Seekers". The answer was "The Seekers". The team who checked our answers marked it correct. And there was another one that I can't remember. Anyway, I thought they both should have been marked INcorrect. Sis said let it go as there was no other team within 2 answers of us so we still would have won or at least tied.

The thing is: Someone else marks your score who may not be as diligent as another group, and no one "official" checks it. I can see where this might annoy some, but that's the way the game works. Clearly it is intended to be fun and entertaining. Competitive, not so much. If it's fun, go. If not, well there's plenty of other things to do. And I agree with the poster who said "sour grapes".

Keep doing the quizzes, but stop putting your hand up for the prize. You still know whether you won, but other people get the chance at the prize.

On P&O, they hve a syndicate (team) quiz every night. Each night, the previous night's winner starts on minus 1. If they win two in a row, next night is on minus 2. And so on.

This is what we do. We love to play trivia and we play a lot on the ship. (We also play a lot on land at local restaurants & bars). Once we win, we then just play for fun, and don't even put our hands up when they start asking how many the teams got correct. We know what we got, and we're playing for fun, anyway.:)

In a TA last year DH and I and two other couples played trivia everyday several times per day. Our team won many times. Everyone just kept laughing at us. They started calling is the Young Smartass'! It was al fun. We did not mind. One thing we did do is NOT take the prizes or gave them to the runners up.

We had a progressing Men vs Women and that was the most cutthroat trivia I have ever witness & participated in. On day 5 the younger females got so annoyed we purposely answered several questions incorrect because we were yelled at for being late to the game (3 minutes late) and sitting with our husbands not one seat over next to another woman! It was so ridiculous!

From the very first word of your post I am guessing that you are a couple. I might further assume that you play as a team--perhaps, with even more teamates.

What if you played as individuals?

You would still be "taking part and adding to the otherwise useless knowledge in the little grey cells." Of course, if the two of you tied for the win, the "elderly lady" would really be disappointed. :)

I love to play Trivia on the ships. We have met many nice people and have even vacationed again with some or visited others when we travel. We have been fortunate enough to win several times during a single cruise and are delighted when we do.

I wouldn't dream of "throwing" a competition just to make other people happy. We don't recruit specialists -- we are either asked to join others or we invite

others to join us.

When Ken Jennings was winning his millions on Jeopardy, do you think he ever thought about "throwing" the game because he had "won enough already"? :)

When ship trivia is convivial and lighthearted, it's great fun. You have been fortunate not to experience the nastiness that can happen - on any ship with the wrong combination of people and attitudes. I've seen it and it's spoiled the game for me. The fact that some good trivia players are intimidated into even considering throwing a game is an illustration of how unpleasant the experience can be -- sometimes. The point is that trivia experiences vary widely and a few negative experiences are enough to influence me to find other things to do. And Ken Jennings wasn't on a ship playing against a few people desperate to win key chains.

Yes, we generally play as a couple; if someone nearby (solo or a couple) want to join us, they're welcome. I did play one on my own (DW was too comfy on the sunlounger to move!) - it was a TriBond quiz ......and I still won lol

On our Carnival cruise last month, the contests were solo, not team. (Though you could form a team IIRC, but only one "ship on a stick" would be rewarded.

I won three, and was happy with that. One contestant won almost 20 (though some were when everyone else who competed were off the ship. We saw his parents once onshore, and they said their son would miss me.) There were several good players, and we all bonded enjoying the friendly competition.

It would have been nice to win more times, but having good competition and making friends was even better.

I actually was 'recruited' once but it was to just make up numbers in a group one. Hilariously the first question we got asked was "What is the capital of Australia?" Obviously I got that right. This group of Canadians and me were pretty stumped on US based questions though.

I love playing trivia on the ship and have also been known to win regularly. My theory is, that it's because I don't care, whether I win or not. If somebody else wins, I'm happy for them. It actually makes it much more fun for me, if there are others that are close or better than my level. So far, I haven't heard any nasty comments, but do remember some dirty looks coming my way. Luckily for me, I have enough self confidence to ignore any of that. It's their problem, not mine.
