Jose Enrique is excellent. Local cuisine with fresh ingredients that is creative and executed at a high level. They don't take reservations, so recommend arriving before opening to ensure a table. Casual, fun, lively vibe despite elevated cuisine. Not inexpensive, but very reasonable for what you receive. Short cab/uber ride from the port.

If you want upscale, Marmalade is in old San Juan and also outstanding, but $$$ and more formal (fine dining, though still somewhat relaxed and not stuffy). Also features local cuisine, but more upscale takes than Jose Enrique.

We went to a lovely place called Toro Salao and had excellent drinks and tapas in their courtyard (they do have a full menu). We made reservations ahead of time through OpenTable and were able to get a table outside on a lovely night.

We walked from the ship - about a 10 minute walk, I think.

Pirilo Pizza Rustica Corner of Fortaleza Street & Tanca

Inexpensive and VERY popular with locals

Terrific place! Good eats, cheap beer (2 Medalla Beers for $ 5.00 as their "endless happy hour" ) all packed into a crowded locals spot right in the heart of Old San Juan. As others have said, it's a authentic jewel.

Patriot Club! Best food and walkable from the ship. Have had many dinners and Sunday Brunch there. This place has been featured many times on different programs. That was after we found it. Great comfortable environment.

You can't beat the food experience!

Coolest dive in Old San Juan, El Batey, 101 Calle Del Santo ... just off the main Square at Plaza de Armas and south of Catedral de San Juan Bautista.

Safe and friendly too... (wasn't always that way back in the 1970's.... don't ask how I know  )

Do they serve food? I have no idea... it's San Juan... :p

“If you walk into this place and don't like it seek professional help. :-)”

A dive bar with the heart of every drunken sailor who ever washed ashore.

Grubby but not unsanitary, Rough with a kiss, all the charm of your grandfathers two day stubble.

I'd tell you more but if you got this far you've been sold.

Another vote for Marmalade! DW and I ate there last night, and it was exceptional! DW said it was one of the best meals she ever had. It was a tasting menu, with your choice of 4,5 or 6 courses with an optional wine pairing. You can choose from several starter, intermediate, main and dessert courses. The service was warm and friendly, taking the time to explain what each course was, and how it pairs with the wine.

DW booked online (Open Table reservations are highly recommended). When we arrived, we realized she had had booked it for the next night! The stafff were very accommodating and found us a great table with no wait at all!

Try the Tiny White Bean Soup! They are famous for it! The brazino was excellent, as were all of the desserts! Pricey when you add the wine pairing, but we'll worth it as a splurge meal!

I said Marmelade before and that would still be my number one choice. Also, really enjoyed my first ever mofungo at the Cafe Puerto Rico. And the Parrot Club was nice. So all of these are good suggestions.

But don't just do dinner! Check out the Marilyn Monroe bar near the cathedral...

Walk down to the end of Santo Cristo and have a frozen daiquiri at the Anam Spa and Cocktail Lounge, outside watching the sunset over the harbor...
