I'm pretty sure the lines in red are the same incident. So whoever put this together did not do a very good job of checking for redundancies and so I would not trust this site for accurate information.

Hmmm. Jamaica...

I would expect the police and possibly DEA to meet the ship. If you're up early enough, you should see someone being escorted off the ship and given their own private ride.

Our past experience, on an Oasis class ship, Security posted at the door for 3 days straight. Seen it first hand on a debark..sheriff and company come onboard and escorted the pax off. Out a different elevator.

Ok my bad, I think our quotes got lost in translation...
Well I'll agree that what I said certainly was mangled going into Canada. Now that you have apparently actually read what I wrote, I'll now say (for the first time) that I do think that RCCL deaths are close to one a week or higher. Based on your statement:
...The research shows 200 deaths a year with all cruise ships worldwide.
if we assume that 200 deaths a year is accurate (I suspect that it is higher than 200), RCCL's statistical share would be 200 * 23.6% ~ 47 deaths per year, or almost one a week.

RCCL daily passenger load is above 110,000 (105,750 double occupancy * 1.056 occupancy rate [due to 3rds and 4ths]). If we assume that RCCL average age is 50 (close to that, might be slightly lower), the expected annual death rate is 0.5%. If we were dealing with the general population, 110,000 * 0.5% results in 550 annual deaths, or over 10 per week. Obviously the demographics of cruisers is not a close match to the general population, but there are a considerable number of people who commit suicide by jumping off the ship, and a considerable number of terminal patients having their last trip. It is not unreasonable to assume that cruiser death rates are at least 10% that of the general population, which would be more than one a week. I have been on a number of cruise ships with deaths that I was personally aware of (and I'm sure many more that I was not aware of). In November I was on a 60 passenger river boat in Myanmar, had dinner with a man younger and seemingly in better shape than I, and who was dead of a massive stroke before midnight. Stuff happens on cruises just as they do at home.

I know all about it... I was on the ship with you.....the next deployment prior to Philly we lost about 8. Heart attack, ladder fall, 3 jet crashes were a couple I remember. I was E division.......

WOW! Coincidence! An old shipmate from the FID!

I wrote a book about my time onboard Forrestal, it's on Amazon. I can't post the details in here. How do we get in touch? It's not every day this happens. I was in CR Division (Radio) on that ship. I remember some people from E division...how about that??

Someone else on the thread here questioned me about a morgue being on our ship. I don't believe we had one, do you remember if we did or not? I know they kept that chief in the reefers with the sliders until we were close enough to get him off the ship and on his way via the philippines as you remember we were in the IO at the time. And I forget the name of the LCDR who ate too many peaches. I never knew you could die from that.

I was also in one of the ship's bands, we played on the flight deck during our picnics. Our guitarist was a RIO from VF-103.

No morgue on Forrestal; maybe they did years after that, no idea. She was scrapped recently. What ships was DH on? You never know, small Navy world.

The Forrestal was up here in RI for a few years along with the Saratoga. The intent was to turn Sara into a museum and a lot of equipment was transferred from Forrestal to Sara before, unfortunately, both ships ended up being scrapped. It was always such a sight to see the two ship next to each other. And for a short time the Iowa was here with them. Growing up in a Navy family I was always infatuated with the ships. Hopefully, we will end up getting the JFK up here for our museum.

,,,,,,,,,,yes it was source of immense pride having many family members working at the old Charlestown Navel Shipyard in my youth. Something to be said about having those symbols of Freedom docked in your back yard.

Sorry for the confusion, I misread TravelerThom for another poster who kept claiming a person dies every week on a Royal Caribbean cruise. I had to go pages back after he stated he never quoted anything besides the RCL form :( thats when I realized my mistake.

If we throw out the deaths per week and just focus on the passenger numbers themselves. I'm still not understanding how you think RCCL having 23% of berths is impossible based on ship count? You do grasp that not all ~300 ships are the same size or run at the same frequency, right? Please say you do.

In numbers you might understand... Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world in land area, but way down the list at 37th in population. Sometimes all stats aren't in direct relation. 300 ships doesn't mean the 46 RCCL ships (based on the other poster's number... I know it's close to this) directly relate to 15%.

I'm completely ignoring the death count part because I don't know how many deaths a year happen on RCCL ships. However, people DO die on ships and the overall Royal brand does represent 23% of all passengers at sea (Royal Caribbean of the Seas ships represent 17%) during the year. It is highly logical to assume that they do have their fair share of deaths. What that number is, I don't personally know.

The saddest thing I have ever seen on a cruise was two college age couples standing at the end of the Guest Services counter with two Officers, some Security Guys, and their luggage.

The ship was allowing them to call their parents and tell them that they were being kicked off the ship for drugs.

Both of the girls were in tears and the two guys were trying to act cool but were not succeeding.

Did I ever miss the outcome of the story for which this thread was started? I read the whole thing, but don't want to have missed anything.!

Very rarely will you get an informed outcome. Driveby shipboard journalism is just that way.

The medical units on RC's ships are actually quite impressive- they are essentially fully equipped intensive care units. I've seen an alpha call response to a poolside pax, bleeding out (presumably from esophageal varices). He was intubated poolside, and the next thing you know there are overhead announcements asking for blood donations. A whole lot of other pax responded, and they did manage to keep the patient alive overnight, but he unfortunately expired the next day.

So I can confirm the Nov 6th Oasis suicide. It happened at about 1am. I heard Oscar Oscar Oscar as I was falling asleep and sat up and said to my husband OMG I think Oscar is overboard. Sure enough we were turning around and the spot lights where being turned on (one was aimed at our cabin when then light it up). Boats in the water searching for the guy and we had to stay put until the US coast guard took over the search at 8 am the next morning. The ship can not leave unless they find the person or someone else takes over the search. Someone had a video of the guy holding on to a lifeboat. It made the news. Also on that cruise there was a medical emergency and we were on the elevator and it skipped our floor and when the door opened the staff yelled emergency get off the elevator. We were surprised. Then in St. Martian the boat was held over due to a sick (he died before they got him off the boat) patient. The family got off the boat and when to the hospital. So we had at least 3 events on that cruise..... Halloween cruise.

I didn't know AOL was still around...I'm on "social media" I don't think we can say the name of it on here. But anyway maybe we'll meet in person on a cruise someday!
