Northern Aurora Posted December 7, 2018 #2 Share Posted December 7, 2018 Thanks for posting. I am trying to vision the impact on ISP with a Breakaway sized ship in port.
wolfie11 Posted December 7, 2018 #3 Share Posted December 7, 2018 I'm trying to picture Hoonah with 5000 people wandering around!
NEWLKAT Posted December 7, 2018 #4 Share Posted December 7, 2018 saddened by this news, it is such a quaint non commercialized port. Not sure it can handle 5000 people in port at 1 time.
Rare Coral Posted December 7, 2018 #5 Share Posted December 7, 2018 (edited) I would have thought RCCL would have done this first. Edited December 7, 2018 by Coral
Italy52 Posted December 7, 2018 #6 Share Posted December 7, 2018 I have mixed emotions. Happy for the revenue that it will bring to the locals but at the same time, saddened by the staggering number of people that will be onshore crowding this town. I love Icy Strait and all its quaintness.
naxer Posted December 13, 2018 #7 Share Posted December 13, 2018 Yeah, mixed emotions. So far the leaders have done a remarkable job balancing their resources and the cruise industry.
Rare Coral Posted December 15, 2018 #8 Share Posted December 15, 2018 For those who are disabled - it will be easier for them to visit. For this reason, I am glad it is being built. I hope for the town's sake, only 1 ship will be allowed per day.
Italy52 Posted December 15, 2018 #9 Share Posted December 15, 2018 Coral, I'm hoping for the same --- one ship per day.

The 2019 schedule shows that there will be more than one ship in port multiple times during the 2019 season. There are days where one ship will arrive after another leaves port, but there are also days with two ships in port at the same time.

Since the first pier was built (was that 2016?) a golf-cart type shuttle drives down the pier and picks up folks with mobility issues right at the ship. There is a circuit for the cart through the ISP compound with several stops. Very handy for folks with any mobility issues and families with small kiddos. I would like to take a look at it and see what ships will be arriving in ISP and what times. Thanks.

It will be interesting to see how crazy it is there with more than one ship. Captain Shawn with Glacier Wind had told us about this when we were there in May. Teresa picks you up in their van and gives you a little tour as she drives you to the dock. We were the second excursion of the day and she was watching for the boats coming back so she could catch the lines. We were on Shawn's boat and there were others who were on their son Casey's boat. They had been tracking a couple of pods of whales that morning, so we headed out to the areas where they were feeding. He put a hydrophone into the water so we could hear the whales at one place that we stopped. That was amazing to hear them and then the sound changes and that was the signal they were surfacing. They also had been watching some bears on the shore and we saw those too. It was a great excursion with a great company.

We didn't get a chance to talk with Shawn much this time as we were all so busy watching the bubble net feeding that happened on both trips. Did you see the feeding as well? It was insane.

Yes, we saw it too, it was amazing! That was when he put the hydrophone in and you can hear them and then it is almost like one says, lets go and they all came up. We also saw them feeding from our aft facing balcony on the ship as we were docked at the pier. Can't wait to go back for more!
