Is the time right?

I was on the Gem last November. Time to arrive back was 10:00 also. On the last day at sea, the Captain announced that we were making good time and would dock early. I walked off at 8:30 a.m. but had a 4:30 p.m flight which was my only option based on expected 10:00 a.m. arrival.

Even for the Gem (Jewel or Dawn) class ships, it typically take 2+ hours to disembark all passengers in an organized & orderly fashion, as "some" have oversized carry-on & checked luggage with them, struggled onto/off the gangways & along the long pier walkways ... downstairs thru CBP and exit to ground transportation or bus/motorcoach transfer.

For mega ships like the Escape, it take even longer - with two (2) gangways used and if the NY terminal is busy, ships like the Gem or Dawn can end up using the older Pier 90 (upgrade & modernization now being planned and funded)

Our last 4 NYC disembarkation in the last 18 months saw passengers still coming off the ship at 10:30 a.m. - among the last groups of colors to be called, some being special needs with assistance from crews (not all of them in a hurry, others were) ... even when we arrived & docked earlier than scheduled.  Early birds among the 2,300 souls (or 4,700+ souls on mega ship) will say, they're already at the airport by 10 a.m. while those caught up in foot traffic will be lucky if they can reach the front of the CBP inspection lines at 10 a.m. - finding themselves at least 1 hour+ from the nearby airports, road & traffic conditions permitting, to make their homeward flights.

NCL, and, other cruiselines do this to discourage disembarking passengers from booking early flights, should an unexpected delay happened - often, beyond their direct control - and end up with unhappy & upset guests, blaming the ship for their misfortune.

P.S.  There is talk of another federal government shutdown, again, this month if ...
