psygist Posted January 8, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2020 Looking for recommendations on which zoo to visit in Sydney: Taronga or Sydney Wildlife? Which zoo allows better opportunity to get up close and personal with koalas? Thanks!
By The Bay Posted January 8, 2020 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2020 Taronga. World renowned zoo. I suggest you start at the top and work your way down the sloping site. Arrive by ferry and take the cable car that passes over the exhibits on the way to the top.
Aus Traveller Posted January 8, 2020 #3 Share Posted January 8, 2020 In all zoos in New South Wales you can get close to koalas, but you are not permitted to hold them. This is a state law. If you are travelling to Brisbane and want to get really close to koalas, you can go to Lone Pine Sanctuary where you are permitted to hold one. The_Big_M Posted January 9, 2020 #4 Share Posted January 9, 2020 Sydney Wildlife is more for the tourist market so has a photo opportunity where you can get really close to a koala. Taronga is by far the better zoo but isn't so touristic so you can't go for the same photo op.
lamchops Posted February 1, 2020 #5 Share Posted February 1, 2020 We went to Toranga zoo last week and spent most of the day there. Toranga Zoo is government run while the wildlife zoo is a private for profit zoo. We prebooked online and received a discount with a 2 day hoho ferry ticket. Taronga is OK as a zoo, but it probably has the best views of any zoo in the world. It's also easy to get to. I didn't know that. When I last went there the only koala holding option I saw cost $120.

The entry price is $42, the koala holidng experience is $150 - and its in Brisbane - which doesn't really help the OP

If I remember correctly, holding a koala was free but if you wanted a photo it was $25-$30 extra. Leigh
Porky55 Posted February 2, 2020 #12 Share Posted February 2, 2020 (edited) The_Big_M said the Sydney Wildlife Park has photo ops and was quite correct, if the OP is still looking for this while in Sydney. https://www.wildlifesydney.com.au Edited February 2, 2020 by Porky55

I'm also fairly shocked that this is allowed - surely its not good for the Koalas

According to the Lone Pine website, they carefully monitor which koalas people can interact with and for how long.
Rare MicCanberra Posted February 2, 2020 #16 Share Posted February 2, 2020 I suppose everything has a price, even the koala's peace.
