Daisi Posted March 23, 2020 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2020 Since a lot of us are at home with cancelled cruises I thought I would start a thread showing some of the places we may miss. I am trying to stick to places on River Cruise intenaries, however, if this is allowed, I am not adverse to seeing interesting tours from anywhere....a great way for us to share places near and far? Jazzbeau, if this isn't allowed, please feel free to delete. Daisi Posted March 24, 2020 Author #5 Share Posted March 24, 2020 Thanks for the link on Dresden. My parents had a friend who was from there, came over after the war, so unfortunately never saw it re-built. It looks beautiful....another one to add to the bucket list! Rare notamermaid Posted April 13, 2020 #12 Share Posted April 13, 2020 Not directly on the route, but very much visited pre- or post-cruise is Berlin and if you are into museums and art, this is the place to go, open 24/7: https://www.smb.museum/en/home.html If you ever happen to be in Berlin on the museum island I highly recommend a visit to the Pergamon Museum. notamermaid

Daisi Posted April 13, 2020 Author #15 Share Posted April 13, 2020 notamermaid...just dreaming of our Danube cruise next year, and looking at all the virtual tours & YouTube videos I can to get to know the areas. Just wondering, the ship (Avalon View) was supposed to have been launched earlier this month, which I doubt happened. Any idea as to how to find out when it does get launched? Would love to see the interior as we will (thinking positively) be on it next year.
Rare notamermaid Posted April 13, 2020 #16 Share Posted April 13, 2020 Daisi, I found one industry website that published a statement by AvalonWaterways (Pamela Hoffee) that they had cancelled the christening in Ybbs/Austria. No new date was given. Best to find out details further into Spring from Avalon directly, probably. notamermaid
Daisi Posted April 13, 2020 Author #17 Share Posted April 13, 2020 Thanks. As I said, we are just curious about the interior mostly...we are booked and going as long as it's sailing! Hope you managed to get out to enjoy some of that nice weather, we have almost all our snow gone, and now comes the rains and we are watching for flooding here. We were lucky enough to spend five days in Berlin about five years ago and the Pergamon was a massive highlight. I can still see those amazing gates! pacmom Posted April 14, 2020 #19 Share Posted April 14, 2020 Good morning, Absolutely agree the Pergamon is remarkable. We spent an afternoon there a few years back. After all that has gone on in the Middle East, am so glad that it was taken to a museum. If you are in Berlin, Museum Island is a great place to spend time. It is quite cold here in southwest Ohio. April is playing her weather tricks. Stay safe and well. Pat

Yes, thanks. Plenty of time to get outdoors as I am not working (tourism put on hold in Germany). Explored a path along a railway line that I did not know, the path I mean, adorned with early blooming trees. Even saw a tiny lizzard. Talking of exploring. @djh1959 The Ishtar gate (a reconstruction) is virtually accessible through Google: https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/monumental/4gJCLa_AtizZIA notamermaid

Rare notamermaid Posted May 5, 2020 #25 Share Posted May 5, 2020 As an excursion this would have been great this year - Ghent in Belgium. The exhibition about van Eyck had to close, but you can take a virtual tour here: https://vaneyck2020.be/en/van-eyck-from-home/ Ghent itself remains a great place to visit for its art when we are allowed to go on cruises again. notamermaid
