Ideas for 18 to 20 year olds on Celebrity Cruises?

If you are stopping in Aruba, I highly recommend Trikes Aruba.  DW and I had a ball, and I have no problem imagining a 19 or 20 year old enjoying it.

Your son is invited to all the "adult" functions (without drinking, of course).  On our recent Summit cruise, they still had trivia twice per day, silent disco, fitness classes, and a number of other things that I don't recall.

It's always a bit of a crap shoot to find passengers in that age range (or even in their early 20s, unless they are on a honeymoon) unless you're on Carnival.  The exceptions are Spring Break and (fortunately for you) holiday cruises.  Here's hoping the fellow 18-20 year-olds are there.  If they are, they tend to find each other and find things to do.

I know a bunch of folks are recommending RCCL, but I can tell you that our 18 and 20 year old sons had no desire to go on a RCCL cruise, even though they've sailed on so many RCCL cruises that they are Diamond cruisers by their own right.  Once they aged out of the teen lounge, they lost interest.  That's not to say they would not come if we were having a "family trip," but it would not be at the top of their lists.

Ninth Celebrity cruise for your kids. You all know what X is about. If no basketball court means no fun, time to go elsewhere unless the kids can expand their entertainment horizons. Suggesting the casino as a possibility is ludicrous. "Here you go kids, you can't play basketball but you can lose lots of money....enjoy."  Perhaps planning a cruise strictly for the parents and counting on the children to adjust, given their cruising experience I'm sure they will.

My 19 turning 20 year old son just discovered there is no basketball court anymore for our Celebrity Silhouette sailing! Has anyone had any experience with young adults on Celebrity Cruises? Do they have any “cool” organized activities for this age group (especially boys)? Love to hear any suggestions or ideas you’ve come up with. We are going to be on a holiday cruise. I’m hoping there will be other young adults in the same boat (no pun intended!) 😀

Have you asked on your RC if there are other passengers bringing children/grand children/cousins etc. in the same age range?

bon voyage

We had a similar situation.  Starting when they were very young, we have taken both of our kids on many Celebrity cruises including several Christmas/NYE cruises.  By the time our son turned 20 he was on his 10th Celebrity cruise.

Since your cruise is a Christmas cruise, you will find plenty of passengers his age on board--although I will admit that there are not a lot of organized opportunities to actually meet them.

By the time he was 20, the activities on shore took center stage for him--so, many of our shore excursions have been experiential--segway tours, quad bike rides, renting jet-skis, sailing, and swimming with stingrays or sea lions, etc.

We have taken the kids scuba diving at many of the ports we visited.  During our last trip to Aruba, we went diving to hunt lionfish (photo) which both kids absolutely loved.  Bonaire is a great snorkeling/diving island and the last few times we've cruised there, it's always been a diving day for us.  However I also found this landsailing activity that I know our two kids would absolutely love which we will do the next time we are there (in addition to diving).

He was never into working out at the gym until he started going to college and by the time he was 20 or 21, he started visiting the ship's gym on every cruise.

He had also become somewhat of a foodie and he always looked forward to eating at the specialty restaurants.  He discovered his love for sushi during our first visit to Sushi on Five.  The Lawn Club Grill was a big hit where he got to throw his own pizza (photo).  We've let he and his sister order the shared dishes that we would eat at Tuscan Grille.

He enjoyed going to some of the shows--especially if there was a good comedian.

I also took him to the casino where he learned blackjack--how to play basic strategy and understanding table etiquette.  He came out ahead during his first few sessions (much to me amazement) and thought it was easy.

Our son has a voracious appetite and he loved raiding the restaurants/grill at anytime of the day.  He especially loves ordering room service each evening to enjoy a bowl of spaghetti bolognese while plowing through every free movie late at night in our cabin.  There were a few cruises where we brought a Playstation for him to connect to the stateroom TV to play.

If you know, is the internet latency low enough that you can actually go online and play games with friends while on the ship?

Both of our kids like playing World of Warcraft.  However I don't remember them playing it on line during any of our cruises.  I will ask them.

I believe the ‘Revolution’ on Equinox was not completed, due to the crane accident where Equinox was in dry dock.

Subsequent Dry Docks have been carried out in Cadiz, Spain. Hence, Silhouette’s was completed.

Jim,

You mentioned the lawn on your post about your 10k daily walk.

This is all that remains of the lawn on Silhouette.EFB0A49A-16F8-40CB-99C3-757349A424F8.thumb.jpeg.009aa0dbb38e7e23fe23e750fbaad8aa.jpeg

Our Jan 31 2020 Silhouette sailing ended up being cancelled by Celebrity (not Covid-related) so that she could be drydocked for her Revolution makeover.

Our daughter said that she never attempted to play an online game like World of Warcraft.  She doubted the ship's wi-fi would be any good at supporting this type of game play.

Arranging activities in ports that our son would enjoy is exactly what we used to do for our son at your son’s age! Contrary to comments from others about RC suiting your son better our son began to ‘outgrow’ the activities on RC by the time he was about 17 (been, seen, done it…). Active days in port followed by leisurely pool days on Celebrity suited him just fine!

We always involved him in planning excursions etc and were often surprised he sometimes preferred a cultural rather than an action based activity. Travel really does widen ones outlook. We always ensured he had electronic devices for quieter times and we also enjoyed family card games and playing chess. Looking back it was really valuable family time.

I am sure there will be enough other young adults on board for him to socialise with poolside or in the gym (look out for any arranged pool volleyball activities etc). Have a fantastic cruise!

I completely agree about outgrowing the "kids" activities! Your thoughts are great and right up my alley. I'm definitely going to hit him up for help in choosing excursions.

AMAZING! I wish you were going on our cruise - our kids would hit it off!!  🙂  I'll definitely have him help in planning excursions. And seeing your son throwing that pizza in the air reminded me that my son loves tossing pizzas at home, so I know that will be a hit. I was going to have him bring a portable gaming system as well. It's nice to have that option, even when just sitting on the balcony or on a top deck (with the hopes he'll see an activity going on to join in!) I really appreciate your photos and ideas - thank you!!

Yes,Cancel Celebrity and take them on one of the mega ships on Royal Caribbean cruise line! More for them to do and better shows!!!  JMO

As D+ and E+ we would say go with what your family wants from your cruise…

Action and activity, Royal Caribbean

Rest and Relaxation, Celebrity….

One is not better or worse than the other, they just have different strengths…

These are not children, they are young adults. The question is whether Celebrity is an appropriate line for young adults.  If they are unable to entertain themselves, there is a bigger problem.

I fully understand that point, My point is that the OP can ask on their RC if any other families with children in their age range will be traveling it would be a starting point for meet ups and entertainment with similar age passengers.

bon voyage

From Experience, I know Celebrity will not disclose this information prior to sailing.

Celebrity would not be disclosing anything, Bo was referencing to ask on RC (roll call)

Thanks to everyone! I'm going to unfollow this topic, since my question on activity suggestions seems to have derailed to changing cruise lines or insulting my kids. For all of those who did have suggestions, I really appreciated them!
