Location of the Bow Thrusters.

Bulbous Bow, but the actual painting is on the sign of the Bow Thrusters 😉

Nice job! Bow thrusters are used to "push" the bow to port or starboard by utilizing "variable pitch" propellers driven by electronic motors mounted above them. Same goes for stern thrusters on ships that are not equipped with the Azipod system

Queen Beatrix

Good choice, but No

HRH Princess / Queen Beatrix has been godmother to:

Statendam IV (1957-1981)

Prinses Margriet (1964-1970)

Eurodam (2008-current)

Having said that, there is someone else who has been godmother to more HAL ships than Princess / Queen Beatrix

Princess Margriet?

Yes Winner! HRH Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, one of three younger sisters to former Queen Beatrix, has been godmother to four HAL ships, soon to be five when she names Rotterdam VII (2021-current) in Rotterdam in May. She has been godmother to:

Prinsendam I (1973-1980)

Nieuw Amsterdam III (1983-2000)

Rotterdam VI (1997-2020)

Oosterdam (2003-current)

Very fitting, I think, that she will be Godmother for Rotterdam VII since she was Godmother for Rotterdam VI.

I suppose my prize "will be in the mail".  😁

John, I never did find the pins that you were looking for a couple of years ago.  Maybe none were made?

In 1973 and 1974 the entire HAL fleet at the time (Rotterdam V, Statendam IV, Prinsendam I, Volendam II and Veendam III) went from being registered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands to a registration to Willemstad, Curacao in the then Netherlands Antilles. The reason? Curacao taxed according to a ship's tonnage; the Netherlands' progressive tax system  taxed on the profit made by a ship

Cheap Southern Caribbean Cruises on CruiseCheap.com

When Veendam and Volendam did their stint with Monarch Cruise Lines in the mid to late 70s, they were flagged in Panama, and remained Panamanian flagged even after returning to HAL until 1981 or 1982 (can’t remember) when they returned to the Netherlands Antilles (specifically Curaçao).  I know when Volendam was cruising to Bermuda out of NY in 1978, 1979, and 1980, it was under the Panamanian flag.

Also, the N sisters of the early 80s (Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam) were registered in St. Maarten rather than Curaçao (still flying the Dutch flag of course)

Once Holland America Line morphed to Holland America Cruises in the early 1970's and then back again to HAL, the re-flagging of the vessels almost became an Abbott/Costello routine of "Who's On First".  Done for corporate and, I have little doubt, financial reasons.  But, what was not affected was the HAL onboard experience.

Thanks for that! Did some more research and you are correct as to the registration of those three ships!

But behind Margriet stands Captain Buckens, sailed with him many times on the Ms Rotterdam.

Yes, that is Captain Kees Buckens; good eye! 😉 Rotterdam VI was named by Margriet on December 9, 1997 in Ft. Lauderdale when Kees Buckens had taken over command of her, the ship, not the princess. We sailed with him on Volendam in April 2001. After leaving HAL in 2001, he has been/still is teaching at the New Zealand Maritime School in Auckland. Pretty sure his spouse is  Kiwi

In 1969, HAL came up with a new idea in dining on Rotterdam V in place of the Cafe de la Paix. That public space was improved upon during the ship's 1989 dry-dock in Portland, OR. The original idea is now a proven concept. What is the name?

Winner! Nice job! The first Lido Restaurant appeared on Rotterdam V in 1969, was improved upon in 1989 and, as Lido Market, has been an established buffet restaurant for some time!

We talked about the "Commodore flag" that gave the senior captain in the fleet, aka the commodore, the right to fly his flag at the stern of his ship. The commodore rank is no longer being used by HAL.

Having said that, there is another flag that certain captains are allowed to fly at the stern of the ship they're in command of, instead of the Dutch national colors. The last two captains, since retired, who could do so were Captains Pieter Jan van Maurik and Pieter Visser. What is that flag?

The Dutch flag with an anchor centred, meaning that the commanding officer is a Dutch Navy Reserve Officer, commanding a non navy vessel.

Down here a picture from the actual flag from Captain P.J. on Zaandam, on our Antarctica cruise in 2015.
