To be absolutely correct, Queen Maxima was still Princess, when she became godmother to the Nieuw Amsterdam 🙂

Down here a picture from the actual flag from Captain P.J. on Zaandam, on our Antarctica cruise in 2015.

Winner! But somehow I knew you would come up with that one! 😄

Both captains Pieter Jan "P.J." van Maurik and Pieter Visser served in the Koninklijke Marine (as did Alphen 😉), the Royal Netherlands Navy and remained in the Royal Netherlands Navy Reserve while serving as HAL captains.

This gave them the right, with permission / a warrant from the Dutch monarch, which has to be requested through official channels, to fly the Royal Netherlands Navy Reserve colors at the stern of the ship they are in command of. That flag is the Dutch tricolor, in the center having a white disk (2/3th of the flag height) with in it a black foul anchor under the royal crown (the emblem of the Royal Netherlands Navy). The flag was adopted by Order in Council on February 28, 1894, lastly confirmed by Order in Council on November 16, 1957. The flag can be flown as national flag on Dutch-registered seagoing merchant ships over 300 gross tons. A copy of the royal decree must be carried on board of the ship the flag is flown on, and may be verified by any Dutch naval vessel (added a couple of pics of Dutch naval vessels with HAL ships) or by a naval port harbor master. There are currently no active RNethNavy reserve officers serving as HAL captains so, as of right now, you will not see those colors being flown

So, which individuals onboard constitute the senior management of a HAL ship?

I'll say for NCL it is the Captain, Staff Captain, Chief Engineer, Staff Chief Engineer, and Hotel Director.  Daily meetings at 0800.

Pretty close to HAL with one exception  😉

Nice, but no, Roy 😉

A hint; with HAL, the staff chief engineer is not part of the ship's senior management. The fifth person's title does end in officer, but not security officer

Bang! Winner! Nice job Cat!

On HAL, the ship's senior management consists of the captain, staff captain, chief engineer, hotel director and environmental officer (the latter was at one time called the SEH - Safety Environmental Health Officer, but this has since been switched back to E/O)

One itinerary where you can see all five together is during the "crossing the equator / King Neptune" ceremony where all five will sit at one end of the pool in judgement (thumbs up, or thumbs down) of crew members who are pollywogs (never crossed the equator before) and are brought before the illustrious quintet

Interesting.  On NCL, since the Staff Chief is responsible for all equipment maintenance outside the engineering spaces (as well as the day to day supervision of the engine room crew), he and the Hotel Director have the most interaction with issues affecting passenger services.  At the morning meeting, the HD can tell the Staff Chief what complaints have come in overnight, and the Staff Chief can tell the HD whether they have been taken care of, or what the status is.

Environmental Officer is a 3-stripe under the Staff Captain.

On HAL, the chief engineer has the most input into the functions you mention. The environmental officer is a one-person department who responds directly to the captain and/or his/her superiors in Seattle. It is a 3 1/2-stripe position (3 1/2 gold bars with blue filling)

A passenger escalator.

Gone before I boarded but I've heard of it.

Roy

Awesome Roy! Winner! Yes, all four "S"-class ships came out with a true escalator that ran between Main Deck and LP Deck. The idea behind those "moving staircases" was to offer embarking passengers on Main deck a different option (besides a stairwell and an elevator) to reach their cabins on Lower Promenade deck while getting a glimpse of the ship’s atrium.

The escalators were prone to mechanical issues and all four were taken out during dry-dock periods at Freeport, the Bahamas, starting in 2010 with the ships gaining two interior staterooms in their place. Definitely unusual to see a working escalator on a cruise ship though!

I think I've seen a number on ships, maybe even some preceding R-class, but never in passenger areas.  The ones I've seen connect the dining room to the galley and I only see them on galley tours.  The only ones I've seen in passenger areas are on the Oasis class, going up from the gangway used in some ports to the first regular passenger deck.

Yep, there are most definitely escalators inside the HAL galleys as we speak 😉

Somewhere, I remember reading that the motion of the ship were a cause--or maybe a part of the cause--for the mechanical issues.  Any knowledge about the truth to that?

I would assume that on a ship they would have to contend with lateral and upward forces which would not be true on land.

It is more the flexing of the hull structure that affects the mechanism.
