Diamond plus BOGO question

First time cruising as a plus coming up. Do we purchase a specialty dinner using the cruise planner for the first night prior to the cruise and then make reservations for the free night 2 onboard? 
Also, must they be used consecutively on nights 1 and 2?

You can do it that way. 
The ability to use it on other than the first two nights depends on the ship.

You don’t have to purchase ahead of time in the cruise planner unless you want to reserve a specific time. If you do, they’ll refund the reservation as OBC and charge the onboard price for the BOGO.

You don't have to dine two different times, if there are two people involved.  First person buys dinner with coupon, second person eats free at the same meal.

I've never pre-purchased.  

I also don't dine there the first night, but I do make the reservation and have them use the coupon the first night.

It works fine at Izumi.

Grandeur the paper in in cabin said excludes izumi ...and chefs table.

 

It said izumi not Hitachi. I asked and was told they were full. I wanted izumi and diamond guy said well you can ask if they will make a exception. The guy at chops has to allow you to have izumi as your 2nd choice. 

 

Could it vary by ship?  I'm boarding liberty sunday and can ask. Have not rebooked grandeur. Grandeur said no izumi as the bogo. I'd have paid for chops or Giovanni but asked for a exception. My paper said bogo does not apply to izumi. I'll look sunday on liberty. I actually pushed a bit trying to get it as my 2nd dinner.

On Allure presently. When i boarded I saw a kiosk taking SD reservations. 
I asked individual thst I wanted Giovanni’s on Sunday an the bogo Chops 

mom Thursday.  It’s a 8 nite trip.
