Why would Carnival care? They get paid for two and that doesn't change if someone doesn't show up. Am I not seeing something?

They could institute a new fee for no-shows like dentists offices do etc.

Because some cruise lines are starting to limit the number of single bookings they will allow - as the ships fill up, they place a cap on single bookings. Others - just follow the thread on Celebrity - will charge far more than the double occupancy rate for certain dates and sailings. At the end of the day it is about revenue maximization. Generally, it is assumed that, onboard spending based on double occupancy will be more than single occupancy. Onboard spending is where the true profit lies.

What is discussed on Cruise Critic is but a tiny fraction of what goes on in the cruise world. All the blue card people and others that have no clue about no shows are the vast majority of people buying and taking cruises. On a grand scale no shows are likely not a problem and they are still taking in double the booking cost for one person even in the event of a no show.

I believe the best response I've seen one of the times this topic was discussed before was:

I would just have him no show.  Tell them when you get there that he had a work conflict. You will get port fees and taxes refunded.  My elderly mother has no showed for 2 cruises and nothing happened. First time she was sick. Second time she fell out of bed, broke her back, and had to have surgery. She wasn't released to fly yet and the cruise was out of Dover, UK. We live in Texas.  We also had one of our employees no show on a cruise we took the office on, too. She couldn't come because of childcare commitments.  We got asked a lot of questions, though, because it was right when Covid started right before the shut down. I wouldn't tell them that the person was sick...or, if you do, tell them that you haven't been around them or it could affect your ability to board.

Because when ships and muster area capacity is full, that "no show" place could have been filled by a paying guests.  Ship profits come from onboard spending not cruise fares.

I was also looking for an answer to this question . This is what happens when I try to remove the 2nd person from my comped casino cruise. Seem like its worth paying the $100 to avoid hassle/refunds/unknowns IMO

Not really no. Why do all that for a penalty when you can do nothing, have the person not show, and let the taxes and ports fees for the no-show be automatically refunded back to you?..

Not a good analogy as you would be paying for the appointment instead if you showed up. Here, you've already paid, in full.
