1. Baltimore

2.  Fort Lauderdale

3. San Juan

4. Barcelona

worst for travel to port solely based on distance and expense

1.  Seward

2.  New York City (not Bayonne)

3. Civitavecchia

I’ve done Seward and love how small the terminal is. The transfer for me was part of the adventure wether by train or the long bus transfer. In a few weeks I’m doing a cruise from Civitavechia to NYC (NCL) but am taking the train again to get to the port. Thankfully I travel fairly light and love the train.

As of right now…. San Juan!

I totally agree. Nothing better than starting your cruise in the Caribbean!!!

When we have sailed from San Juan we usually arrive 2 days early and will stay at least 1 day after.

Which is why I said it is based on expense and distance.

We've only done the popular US based embarkation ports:

  • Ft. Lauderdale, FL
  • Miami, FL
  • Port Canaveral, FL
  • Galveston, TX
  • Bayonne, NJ
  • Seattle, WA

I like the sailaways best in Miami and Bayonne

Ft. Lauderdale feels like a shipping container yard more than a cruise port.

Galveston, Port Canaveral, Seattle are o.k. but a much bigger hassle to get to and back.

One of the reasons I like Vancouver is because it overlooks the container yard. I have shipments come through that port so I like seeing where my long awaited orders come through before boarding a train and crossing the country.

Fair enough, no arguments there, but it's far from the scenery I personally want to look at while embarking or sailing away.

For ease of getting to the port: Cape Liberty (don't have to fly there). For beauty on sail away: Miami, Vancouver and Tampa. For convenience in small terminals: Civitavecchia and Ravenna. For a place to spend time before or after a cruise: Rome, London, Venice, San Juan.  I haven't met an embarkation port I haven't liked, because I'm going on a cruise!

That is exactly what we do from the first time we cruised from there and we have cruised from there four times.

Stockholm was by far the best port we ever sailed from. Easy Uber ride and quick to get on ship. Sailing through all the islands was beautiful.

Favorite US port, Port Canaveral.  Easy in and out. We always rent a car and arrive a couple of days early so that helps  with the trip from Orlando.
