vicd1969 Posted February 7 #27 Share Posted February 7 If you enjoy spicy foods, you ought to request the kitchen to raise the spice level a notch or two. My orders were milder than I expected. That said, the tempura shrimp appetizers were very good (as they're not supposed to be spicy). I didn't like the Tom Kha soup - hardly any flavor. But this was on the Nieuw Statendam a bit over a year ago - how dishes taste probably vary from ship to ship and chef to chef.

Do you know if this is also possible in Tamarind? One of our party isn't terribly excited about the entree options but might like multiple appetizers, maybe a larger portion of an appetizer as a main course. I have ordered the tempura shrimp app as my entree (several times on Koningsdam and once on Nieuw Statendam). They were happy to oblige. They gave me 5 which was perfect along with some crab fried rice. 1

PS: what was the name of the dessert they used to have that looked like a giant fortune cookie and had chocolate ganache inside? Also my favorite dessert: a sweet "cheesecake" item...forgot the name.🤔 No fortune cookie; here's the cheesecake. Favorite drink is the Emperors Nectar.

Is there a more recent version than that? ~Nancy Good to hear; when I look at the Navigator Tamarind menu I only see the shortened list. I haven't looked at the HAL website menu recently. Thought they would be the same.

Rare ottahand7 Posted February 9 #42 Share Posted February 9 Last night we ate at Tamarind. Like everything on the ship it was busier than usual. Partner and I have OB credit to use so we ordered upcharge and sushi items. Both were lobster based, I had the wok seared lobster and he had crispy lobster sushi. Mine was not wok seared but in a thick batter then fried. It was very chewy so Caribbean lobster. There was a lot of it. His was cool and I would think fried lobster should be hot but the dipping sauce was fabulous. I had the Satay skewers and tempura shrimp as starters. The skewers were lukewarm but the sauce was excellent. The lamb was declared perfectly cooked and tender. More food porn from last night.

And if one cannot/does not eat seafood (yes it is possible to enjoy Tamarind w/out seafood) they will serve rice chips. They advise to avoid one of the dips if you don't eat seafood - I think it was the one on the left. I only ate the center one (it was great), cabin mate enjoyed them all.
Real NHDOC Posted February 9 #45 Share Posted February 9 I recommend anyone save their money and order the Szechuan shrimp instead of the wok seared lobster. It’s basically the same recipe but the shrimp is better than the lobster.

Actually, we were not served chips, but a bowl of 10-inch wide kroepek we had to break apart to dip them into the three little bowls and they lacked any shrimp flavor. Tarimand use to serve a much better before dinner "snack" back in the day.

Billthekid Posted February 10 #48 Share Posted February 10 It did not look like that but more like very large pork rinds, puffy and needed to be broken into smaller pieces to dip into the three sauce bowls.

Shrimp chips are primarily tapioca, with some dried shrimp or shrimp shell powder. They are bland and more noddle flavored. They have an incredible shelf life, and can easily be substituted for chips when making any sort of dips. We buy them puffed up in a bag at our local Asian market and have their small disks on hand too, but those have to be fried up fresh to make them puff up. Fewer calories than chips, but are satisfying as a crunchy snack.
