Pre- cruise Miami or Fort Lauderdale?

Recommended Posts

We are sailing on Indy from Miami on Mon 9/16. We fly in to FLL on Sun 9/15. Which is prefered to stay? We are a party of 6 or we can split up for transfers. Thanks

The biggest challenge is getting between anywhere in Fort Lauderdale and the port of Miami. The last time we sailed out of Miami, it took us almost an hour to get to the port after we crossed the Miami city limit. Every major roadway leading to the port is seemingly under construction, and traffic moved so slowly that a 90 year old with a walker could have passed us in a blur😱. We would still do a pre cruise in FLL, just plan on leaving for the port really early on cruise day.

The downside to staying pre-cruise in Miami is the hotels close to the port are outrageously overpriced.

I agree.  I avoid Miami hotels if I can.

From an Fort Lauderdale hotel, and with six people, I recommend you use SAS Transportation, since they can take all of you for $13 each to the Port of Miami.  They do NOT service Miami hotels, though.

I have also used them to go from the Port of Miami to FLL airport.

With less than a day it would be pretty limited things to do other than settle in, get some dinner and organize to head to the port.  The bonus of Miami is that there is less travel the day of the cruise.

@Vacuum49 you stated your cruise departs on Monday.  You can run into traffic any time and any day in south Florida, especially between Miami and Fort Lauderdale but a Monday morning it will be very likely especially heading south.

There are a few spots in the Miami area but i would probably do something near the port or at the Blue Lagoon area.

Depends on what time your flight comes in.  This is Memorial Day weekend in Miami.  It can take an hour to go three blocks.  I worked on Miami Beach for many years and experienced this headache.  SAS Transport is great for transport to Miami, but I don’t know if you would be able to book them so close to transport date.

Hello @Vacuum49 and welcome to the Cruise Critic message boards!

Thank you for your new thread! However, it was off topic in the Royal Caribbean International forum. To help you out your new thread has been moved to the North American Homeports - Florida Departures forum where it will be on topic. The majority of your fellow Cruise Critic members that have sailed from there or live there frequent this forum and provide feedback here. Browse through the thread titles on this forum looking for threads of interest. You will probably find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers and we are so glad you found us! Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community categories list of the various forums. I suggest you put the link in your Favorites for quick & easy access in the future. Please read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka Stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following portion from the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will post replies to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port, etc. and of course, on the correct forum. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, sail date or port in your message if that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members answer you.

You need to find and post on the Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your specific line, ship and sail date. That is where you will find fellow Cruise Critic members sailing with youPlease read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call. For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the GuidelinesWe also have the following Cruise Critic article you might enjoy8 Reasons to Join a Cruise Critic Roll Call

The specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your ship, line, and sail date is the ONLY place on the Cruise Critic message boards where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members are allowed to post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions or transportation with each other to save money. There is a "captive audience" there since you are all sailing together! Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that may have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, they may have already posted share requests that may interest you. Roll Calls are for Cruise Critic members on the same cruise. They get to know one another online before their cruise so there will be all kinds of discussion in the Roll Call thread for their cruise!

Once you locate the Roll Call thread for your specific line, ship and sail date if one is already created, first read through the whole thread to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you. Then use the dark blue Reply to this topic button to join the Roll Call by posting an introductory post about yourself on the Roll Call thread. When done with your message, click the dark blue Submit Reply button.

If you want to address a particular post already in the thread, be sure to use the Quote feature on that post as I did yours above. That way all will be aware of what your post concerns. Click the Quote function on the post you want to address. When the Message Reply box opens, the quote appears in a box at the top. You type your message UNDER the quote box. When done with your message, click the dark blue Submit Reply button. If the member you quoted has used the Follow feature on the thread, they will get a notification that you have replied to their post

If a Roll Call thread for your specific line, ship & sail date has NOT been created, please feel free to create it! Just follow the directions in How To: Create A New Roll Call. Please make sure you use the complete alpha date format for the sail date in the Roll Call thread title so the Find your Roll Call Search Tool can work correctly. Example: January 01, 2025. Then sit back and wait for your fellow Cruise Critic members sailing with you to join in by posting on the thread. They will appreciate you starting the Roll Call! And don't worry about any responsibilities in starting a Roll Call thread. Roll Calls belong to everyone; there is no designated leader or owner. It does not matter who started the thread.

If you ever need technical help in regard to using the Cruise Critic message board software, go to the Need Help Using the Forums? Check Here! forum. You will see a large amount of "How to..." pinned threads toward the top of the forum's first page. Also, browse through the threads in the forum looking for threads of interest. Again, you may find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope this will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. We are glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Happy sails,

Host Kat

Like most things we all have our different preferences.

Personally, I prefer Miami over Fort Lauderdale. I wouldn't have said that in the 1980's and 1990's but Miami has changed a great deal from then.

With that said in your case you won't have much time to enjoy either location as you board the day after you arrive.

Given that I would still go with Miami so you are near the port the day your embark. There are lots of hotel near the port at a range of prices. That is where I would recommend staying.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We will probably stay in Fort Lauderdale area and transfer to POM on Monday am. I was curious if things were the same since I have not cruised since 2017.

Both areas are great places to stay in. I would say if you have never stayed in the Miami area and wanted to check it out (assuming you fly in with time to do so) then stay in Downtown/Brickell area.

The only real downside is that you will have the drive the day of the cruise. Depending on what time you leave that drive can be anywhere from 90+ mins to 45-mins. Staying in Miami has a relatively easy Sunday drive to Miami and then you are close to the port.
