"New" Poseidon...would you see it?

Recommended Posts

Hey laugh all you want

Thats the table the only survivors were all seated at in the first film.

How much do you have to tip the maitre'D to get assigned that table? *LOL*:) :) :)

Hey - I'll gladly sit next to the NYC Cop's former-working-girl wife!

(in her acrylic heels)

I'm no SNOB!

:D

My first real job was as an usher at a movie theater when I was in high school. Poseidon Adventure played for the first 12 weeks I worked there, so I have actually seen the movie 82 times (no exageration). I saw it on AMC about 30 years later and was surprised how much I remembered.

So I HAVE to see the new version.

BTW -- on my first cruise, we were in a hurricane and they were showing THE PERFECT STORM on TV onboard.

No, won't see FLIGHT 93. Watched a few minutes of the A&E version last week and started crying. Can't do this one.

The old Poseiden Adventure is playing on AMC next week in honor of the opening of the new one. It would be fun to see both, but I'm not sure I can handle them too close together!

I'm going to see Flight 93 in honor of all those who died that day. Every family member of every passenger on that plane supports this film. As hard as it will be for me, I feel I owe it to them. It never hurts to cry a little for someone else, and maybe a little bit for all of us at the same time for what we lost, and what our children lost, on that terrible day.

DH & I are excited about another "cruise ship" movie...we've watched them all (except for Das Boot...haven't been able to find it). With our upcoming October cruise, we thought it would be great for our family/friends cruising group to see the "new" POSEIDON together...then after some thoughtful consideration, we decided that it probably wouldn't be a good idea for those "1st time cruisers" in our bunch. Then we remembered the fiasco and embarassement we went through when we had our "long-time" cruising friends join us when we went to see BOAT TRIP (not knowing what the movie was about ahead of time...we were anticipating something like OUT TO SEA...boy were we mistaken!). So, we finally settled on having our friends who are Cruise Planners join us in seeing this "newest" of ship movies. They have been on enough cruises themselves that they won't "be afraid"...and they love to watch anything that has to do with cruise ships too...so we should be "safe" in enjoying movie night with them!

I look at these movies as sheer entertainment...something to help pass the time until I step foot on our next cruise ship...yes, it is an addiction (not unlike having to check the Cruise Critic Boards each day). Even though I view the "ship" movies as entertainment...sometimes they are actually filmed on a "real" ship, which causes us to research that ship & it's history. But, even "disaster entertainment" can be educational...in case of a "real" emergency, we might just actually remember what "saved" the passengers in those imaginary disaster flicks! :-)

We plan on watching our video of the original POSEIDON ADVENTURE before seeing the "new" POSEIDON at the theatre next week. We can't wait until the IMAX POSEIDON comes to our city. We'll probably add the video of the POSEIDON (when it is released) to our "cruise ship" video collection. Yes, we are suckers for ship movies...we saw TITANIC seven times on the "big screen"! We loved hearing the MY HEART WILL GO ON playing in the background as we shopped in the gift shop on our very first cruise.

Will we be afraid watching the POSEIDON turn upside-down? I don't think so...after all, we weren't afraid when we learned that the NORWEGIAN DAWN was struck by the "rogue wave" just two weeks before we were to enjoy our cruise aboard her. (We were more concerned that our cabin wouldn't be "ready" for us, as it was one of those that was affected by the water. But, we were happy to learn when we boarded that it had been refurbished, so we virtually were sailing in a brand new cabin!)

Here's hoping we all enjoy the POSEIDON, realizing that it is fictional. And yes, we'll probably watch the "bird flu" movie. There is a difference in the "enjoyment" one gets when watching the TITANIC, or the upcoming FLIGHT 93, because they are based on the reality of those events of history. Hey, the way the media portrays some things today, I think that the movies based on historical events might be just as factual!

I wish everyone blue skies, calm waters, and gorgeous sunrises/sunsets on their upcoming cruises!

My dh & I went last night. We also took our frineds, who will be cruising for the first time in Nov with us. We all joked that if the Grand ends up upside down we know what to do. She only asked, "I thought there was a casino"? I had to tell her that on the cruise ships I have been on that the casino is not in the dining room. And that the cpt does not do shows like that nor do you really see him. However, I have only been on RC & Princess (going on Carnival in a week). It just made us more excited to go on our cruise. So will they do a movie on a cruiseship on fire next? Oh wait, that already has happened for real.

We were on the 4/15 TA crossing of the Noordam. As soon as we got on board we went to our cabin - 6007. That is almost at the front of the ship. We quickly discovered our "private deck" and went to stand on it (runs the entire front of the ship). As we enjoyed the NY skyline I noticed the billboard smack dab in front of us, right there for everyone onboard to see.

You guessed it - The Poseidon Adventure."

I guess NY has a sense of humor.

LOL!

Oh, that's funny. Thanks for the laugh! I needed it.

The film's premise bothers me. Where did this "rogue wave" come from???How did it build up to that height out in the middle of the North Atlantic?? Was it the result of a meteor impact? Tsunami waves don't do that in the middle of the ocean, you know.

Yes ... I know ... I would ruin the film for others. I'll wait until it comes out on Cable.

I guess you won't be watching the "DA Vinci Code" either then. Because I take fiction as what it is. I thought the original was great entertainment. I went knowing its fiction(not true) and enjoyed it for that. Happy Cruising

My gallows-humored daughter took me to see Poseidon for Mother's Day. (Adorable, isn't she?) I should preface with the fact that I am taking my first cruise in two weeks. (Ahem.)

Movie was barely okay -- -- like others have said, we all know the plot, so the only fun was in guessing whick speaking-role characters would get bumped off and how and searching for "flatties" (fake dead people that are essentially just a costume on the set).

But, the real excitement of the evening was coming home to watch a Discovery Channel documentary on the Oceano (Oceanus?) sinking off the eastern coast of South Africa in 1991 with the rat-captain, officers, and several crew escaping without a word to the passengers. The heros were actually the cruise director and the entertainment staff. (Note to self: In case of emergency, yell out, "Is there a magician in the house?!") It was disturbing to learn that the Captain was still working, albeit as a ferry captain, somewhere in Greece!

Luckily, no lives were lost and no serious injuries.

There was what I thought was a darkly funny post-script to the story -- -- "passengers had yet to be fully compensated for their losses," etc. Well, I guess that's what happens when you have no takers for "free" cruise on that line.

I saw it on Friday (opening day) after much anticipation. Not so much because it was about cruising, but I'm a disaster movie fan. I enjoy a movie where I am entertained and don't have to think. As long as you go in knowing that all disaster movies are the same (select few characters that are introduced to the audience immediately, fighting between the survivors and a string of disasters hindering their escape), you can enjoy it. Just go in knowing it has much better effects than the original and it is just a summer flick not rocket science.

I saw it on opening night in IMAX and found it every bit as entertaining as the original was back when I was a kid. It's so refreshing to see an action film that actually holds your attention! (By the way, IMAX screens accounted for 2% of the screens and 7% of the revenue on opening weekend. The theatre where I saw it in Toronto was sold out and everyone's eyes were pretty much glued to the screen!)

You all say the new Poseidon reminds you of the Disney Cruise Ship and some other boat, but to me, it reminds me of QM2, I don't know why, but it just does. Most of the features are similar to QM2, like they have similar funnel designs and the sterns of the ships are similar. Someone said the producer or someone went on QM2 during the writing, this might have been their inspiration...

All I know is that the one on TV was about the lamest thing in the millenium...

...and that this new Poseidon looks suspiciously like the spawn of a Seabourn and a Disney ship mating.

Actually the Poseidon is modelled after the QM2. Thats why the staircase in the Poseidon's ballroom is identical to the staircase in the QM2's Britannia Restaurant. And I saw this movie. Its good. But WB edited to many scenes out so there snot any good character development.

Mom & I decided that we didn't want to see it. We had our own fun during our trans atlantic on the Rotterdam back in September 2004 when we rode out hurricane Karl and sat dead in the water for 3 hours a looooong ways from land. Have been curious though how the new version ends and if the survivors were rescued through a hole cut in the bottom of the ship. The DVD of this movie is out on Tuesday.

47 cruises on Holland America at the age of 41

504 days at sea on 11 different DAM ships

500 day gold medallion holder

9/06 Trans Canal - Westerdam

12/06 Christmas & New Years - Westerdam

if Holland America doesn't go there WE DON'T GO!!!!

This is exactly my point. The Poseidon is based on QM2
