$3.95 Service Charge for Room Service starting

Recommended Posts

A big harsh but none the less the truth. I don't agree about killing ourselves by over eating is OK. Maybe big brother but in the real world there are changes in the way food is sold and prepared to address this problem. Obesity in American is NOT an individual problem but a national one. Schools no longer provide certain snacks. A country with a questionable health care system but raging rate of heart disease and diabetics, as a result of obesity is not good, in my opinion. I mistakenly thought most people are sound asleep at 5 in the morning...my bad:D

If I follow your logic, if people are not asleep between midnight and 5AM, and ordering room service on a cruise ship, then they are obese?

I dunno, Elizanessie looks pretty normal sized to my eyes!! :D:D

I would imagine a lot of people from early seating who go to shows, the casino, bars, dancing, etc., are hungry between midnight and 5AM. Those dancing people are probably pretty skinny, too!:D

I guess we will just have to make sure we are back by 11:55pm to order milk and cookies. :D

Milk & cookies !!! Hey its 3 sometimes 4 burgers with bacon(hold the onions), cheesecake, big pot of coffee, tea for two..oh yea and cookies and extra milk...thats all for now thanks.:D

After that its 3 hours sleep for me and I am up ready for my bacon and fresh rolls and pastries, coffee from room service before hitting the WJ for more bacon but with toast, fried egg(over medium),pancakes and blueberry sauce and two mugs of coffee :D

Strange thing...I never ever put on weight on a cruise.

We ordered late night room service a couple times on our last cruise and I'm sure we will on our upcoming cruise. I don't mind that they are starting to charge a fee.

However, I would like to know what percentage of the $3.95 goes to the server. If they aren't receiving all of it (which I'm sure their not) then I would feel the need to tip an additional amount.

I think they should charge all day for room service. Maybe it will cut down on traffic and the room service people will not be so overwhelmed (as they always seem to be).

$3.95 with gratuity included is nothing.

So then.....do you think they should charge 3.95 each time you use the Main Dining Room to cut down on the traffic and congestion it causes when people are waiting to get in there? I honestly do not understand what you mean by cutting down on traffic?? We use room service almost every night, I don't care if they do charge the $3.95 per order as long as they make sure there is something posted on the menu or in the room so people know that the tip was already included.

I'm raising my hand as one of the people who use it after Midnight:D

Eating late at night does not make you fat, eating fat does not make you fat http://www.coastalpost.com/08/04/15.html. Eating sugar laden crap, drinking ( tons of calories) and sitting around by the pool makes you fat!:p But whose business is it anyhow?

What upsets me most about RCCL's policies these days is that they sell you one product and provide something different.

It is currently 6:15pm in the time zone where RCCL is. There web site still says

" That's why we offer complimentary room service to all our guests for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 24 hours a day. So go ahead and have breakfast in bed or enjoy a sweet temptation dessert on your balcony. "

I doubt on New Year's Eve, there is a tech still working to make the change. Although I have already made my final payment on a cruise that was advertised to have "FREE 24 hour room service", it sounds like that will not be the case.

I'm not arguing whether or not people should be eating at those hours, or whether or not RCI has the right to charge for it. What I don't agree with is the right RCI has and takes to change anything they want after we have paid for a cruise.

Hi JC

We often play mini golf around 2am and that gives us the munchies :D..well either the golf or closing down the bars does it ;)

I can imagine thre are a lot of drunken college students ordering room service and trashing their rooms at that hour of the morning. And I don't suppose they tip!!:( Maybe this is to offset some of that.

Just a thought....I wonder how busy room service will get between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. It's a shame.

I always did pay about this for room service... I keep an envelope of $1 bills just for this so I could adjust depending on the size of the order. ;) ...and whenever I did order room service later in the evening they would always say that it would be around 45 minutes to deliver... so instead I go to the windjammer and get food and bring it back to the cabin.

You party animal you!:D

jc<---- rarely sees midnight:D I am going to try tonight!

Hey.........I'm staying up to watch the ball drop in New York.........here in Arizona...........in the comfort of my pajamas!:D

Rick

And regarding the $3.95 service charge...........if I ever order during those hours.........I would not hand them my normal $2 to $3.00 tip. Personally I don't think it's a big deal.

By cutting down on traffic I mean it will may make people think twice before ordering RS. It is usually at least 45min to 1hr 1/2 to get anything delivered, and if it is wrong or something is missing, double that time.

I often see trays of food left in the hallway that are barely touched. Maybe it is because RS is 'free'? A nominal charge often makes people behave more responsibly.

I also wonder how many people do not tip room service at all, especially in the late night hours. Maybe that is the reason for the charge.

I certainly don't like being nickel and dimed but I think RS needs an overhaul and if this is part of the experiment, it's fine by me.

Yeah, but so is stupidity a national problem. And there are a lot of poor people also. I am not sure the policy (if it is implemented )is in place because people are fat or just because obesity is rampant in the US that makes for a good policy change by the cruise line.

They are not my parents. Surely you don't want the cruise lines to implement a policy to make sure you are in bed by 10:00pm so you get a good nights sleep and up early for that mmmmmmmmmmm good breakfast to start your day and your daily walk on the pool deck? :)

I hardly think RCI is implementing this to keep us healthy.

It's a cost saving measure in a bad economy. :(

Whatever, I still tip more than $3.95 for room service if I order more than 2 things. :)

I am skeptical of this 3.95

Here is what is still posted on RCCL.com website:

poptitle_1b.gifIncluded in your cruise ticket price is the entertainment, most meals (main dining, buffet dining, room service), your accommodations, and activities including our amazing fitness center, entertainment and our award-winning Adventure Ocean® Youth Program. You are expected to tip your cruise staff, but you can purchase tips in advance so you don't have to worry about it during your cruise. Some drinks, such as alcohol and soda are extra, but we offer unlimited soda packages for your convenience. And that's not all. For an extra cost, we have additional specialty dining venues, casinos, shopping, and shore excursions close_off.gif

If they were going to change this tomorrow, I highly believe it would be changed on their own website. Plus, those of us who have already booked would fall under the old rules of room service included. It would be like them trying to add a fuel surcharge to the already paid cruises.(that didn't work too well.)

If Liz posts info here on the boards, its factual.;)

Of course they are not going to have the updated info on RCI's website. The charges are starting 1/1/09.

Gee whiz Liz...how do you put all that away and still look great ?:D;)

If I ate like that on a cruise, I would have to bring a Tailer with me to make me some new clothes to get off the ship with. LOL :D

My first reaction was, wow, another upcharge. Then as I read a few of the posts I got to thinking I wish they'd institute it for all hours of the day. The one thing I hate about room service is trying to tip the person who brings it when everything else on the ship is cashless. I just don't carry a lot of small bills around and having the charge, which includes tip, for room service would eliminate that concern.

There have been times I didn't order room service because I didn't have any small bills with me at the time. In a weird sort of way, this might actually increase how often I use room service.
