Is decorating your door tacky?

I realize I say this at my peril but the title of this thread is "Is it tacky?"

A small object that serves as a visual cue in locating the cabin seems very reasonable and understandable. Generally, the decorated doors tend to give things a dorm-like or billboard appearance that doesn't appeal to me. The presence of door decorations is not going to negatively impact my vacation; it just looks......tacky! Maybe you could decorate the inside of your door!

I think it is quite likely that taping things to doors is going to take its toll on the paint over time. Putting decorations on a balcony disturbs me from an environmental point of view. Things will rip away and blow overboard no matter the good intentions of the decorator.

Fortunately, I have not witnessed a lot of door decorating. Thanks for allowing me my opinion and happy sailing.

Our door always has a magnet of some sort. It's usually something shaped like NJ (where we're from) or a Nittany Lion paw (go PSU!). People in our area have thanked me b/c it does make finding their cabin easier too. Friends have used cleap dry erase boards & have gotten interesting messages. See college isn't over.

Much more than that gets a bit obnoxious IMNSHO.

I was fine with the idea in general-- but New Jersey ?

I must say that this topic makes me smile. We didn't join the CC members by putting signs on our door but thankfully we had a wheelchair right outside of our door so we were able to easily find our cabin. The in-laws surprised us with cabin decorations and the sign on the outside of the door was a big help when the wheelchair got moved. :o

There was a cabin with a magnetic notepad on the door . . . now that seemed like a great idea for a large group.

  • 3 months later...

Speaking only for myself, I like seeing decorated cabin doors, and since I always travel with my children it's practical -- it makes the door easy to find in a long hallway.

The first time we decorated our door, we used magnets. It was a mistake; the door had "wormtail" type grooves in the metal, and some parts were difficult. Since then I've brought the gum-type stuff that I use in my classroom. It works much better.

A friend put up pink, fuzzy dice. We used it as a reminder of where our room was, too. She was quite sad that they disappeared 1/2 way through the cruise. I was not surprised but sad for her. Also sad for us as we now had to look for our room number.

I'm not all that fond of overly decorated doors, but I sure don't care if someone does it. I have thought of having a small magnet of some kind as a help in locating our room quickly, but I wouldn't waste packing space on much else.

What I don't get is why in the world anyone would steal something from a door, whether it's a magnet, a decoration or whatever! This makes me feel partly mad, partly sad and very, very worried about what society is coming to.

I mean, really, stealing practically worthless stuff? Why??? Is it just kids? And if my kid came back with a bunch of items I'd never seen before, he'd better be prepared for a dull, boring rest of the trip spent mostly in the cabin.

If it's adults, I just give up. I have no explanation for that kind of behavior.

Tacky...I don't get it. Would you decorate the door of your hotel room?

That's been answered.

My question: Do you put up holiday decorations where you live?

Birthday decorations?

Do you like to decorate when you celebrate?

We are celebrating our cruise.

(Just look away)

Maybe it's the people who gripe about other people decorating their doors.

Just sayin'

I'm with you. More people probably rolled their eyes than thought it was cute.

Why do people do it on a ship, and not in a regular land based hotel? A ship is nothing more than a floating hotel. If you did that in a landbased hotel, I"m sure staff would either tear it down or ask you to take it down.

I never understood why people did it anyway.

Since this thread calls for strictly opinion since there is no rule, that I know of, by the cruise line regarding it.

Yes it is tacky! I don't feel that any guest has the right to use public space, and the outside of your door facing a hall is public space to decorate, advertise etc.

To those who have recieved positive comments on board, I don't doubt for a minute that there have been others who rolled their eyes as the passed your door but who is likely to say something negative to you about it, unless it was something obviously offensive. So just because you did not get negative comments doesn't mean there were not negative opinions of it.

I have seen people hang banners from their balcony in port as well, again very tacky.

So to the OP in answer to your question, There will be those on board who think it is fine and those who think it is not.

There will also be those that will remove such items from your door, and no, as much as I dislike them I don't but I have seen people do it, and especially kids do it.

Meh.... asking whether door decorating is tacky is like asking whether wallpaper instead of paint is tacky.... or makeup or lawn decorations or jewelry. It always depends on the nature and degree, plus on top of that it is highly subjective. Many things can be done in a tacky or tasteful manner, so it is really a "depends" type answer.

As far as why people do it on a ship rather than a hotel, there are a lot more doors in a much longer hallway. Also, the frequency of time spent going to and from one's cabin is much higher than in a hotel, and the number of passersby is much higher with more people confined to a smaller area of space.

That being said, if we were traveling with my Dad and staying at a hotel I would do the same for him there. Unless you really want a forgetful old man coming to your door rather than his own.

I can see putting a small magnet or something in the door as a visual guide for him.

But if you were in a hotel, you'd actually decorate the door in gaudy, tacky decorations that look like they came from the dollar store or Target??

I'm rolling my eyeballs again! LOL

What about a small magnet used as a visual guide but purchased from the dollar store or Target? Would that pass the eyeroll test? ;) (Plus, how would you know and why would it matter?)

The whole point to me is helping me to locate my own door so I think that would be misplaced.

There are many ways to attach decorations to a door--you don't need to use tape. Wind socks and other decor on balconies are either secured well (why would they want to lose it in the ocean?) or put out only when in port.

Fortunately, I have not witnessed a lot of door decorating. Thanks for allowing me my opinion and happy sailing.

Then don't judge too harshly. when I talked about door decorating, I'm not talking about wrapping a Christmas present. I'm putting up a CC sign and hanging some beads on my door number/mailbox.

I couldn't care less if people rolled their eyes. If I cared what people thought, I would have to lock myself in my home.

I see a real difference in opinions and see the core belief.

Non door decorators feel they are at a hotel.

Door decorators feel they are in their temporary home celebrating their wonderful cruise vacation.

I really like the usefulness of it-to be able to spot your door quickly or use it to get your bearings in the long corridors.

I admit it never occurred to me to do this on my first cruise, but I'm going to put up some very tasteful door decorations (round circles with vacation themed scrapbook stickers on them) to help my son & husband find our room :D

I'd be one to walk down the hall looking at others decorations and smiling.

I've seen some doors decorated and most were not over done. Some were way out there.

Who cares what anyone thinks. If you want to do it then do it. Have fun. If some people think it's tacky who cares.

You are not hurting anyone by doing that.

Personally I've never done it but I don't care if others do. I just want everyone on board to have a fun time and enjoy their vacation.

Happy people make me happy.

I have always taken note of the decorations on the doors and enjoyed them. The ships even sell decorations for that specific use! On our last cruise we were sandwiched between two honeymoon cabins with cruisline's "honeymooners" signs on the doors. We were "rocked" to sleep everynight. If it wasn't for the signs we might have been annoyed, but knowing we were surrounded by honeymooners just made us smile!;)

We're cruisin' on my birthday this year and I will be decorating!

"Is decorating your door tacky?"

My personal opinion is yes. I have seen more door decorations on the floor than on the doors. Some kids play games running up and down the halls ripping the stuff off of the doors. Thankfully most parents seem to keep a better eye on their rug rats.

I don't understand the people who get bent out of shape over door decorations. Now, if someone posts porn on their door, that I could see being upset about. But if it's something cute that helps people pick out their cabin without problems, what's the harm?

It's amazing that this thread has been going on for so long. Door decorations, who da thought? You have inspired me to decorate my door on my next cruise. Do I decorate my hotel door? (I don't stay for more than one night at a hotel.) No, but I decorate my house door, put up a nice summer wreath in the summer with sunflowers, in the fall I put out Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations. I think that decorating invites passerbys to involve themselves, gives them something to talk about, and yeah if it helps you find your room more power to you, (or to the decorator). I like the idea of the map of the US, also maybe a map of each port. I like making maps. AND now i know what to do with all those magnets my dentist gives me. thanks.
