Do you ever...... find yourself

As others have said, we're never bored, but usually entertain ourselves rather than relying on the ship's activities. We enjoy watching the sea, people watching (that NEVER gets boring!), reading, listening to the ship's or our own music, conversation with new acquaintances, planning what to see in the next port, writing a travel journal, downloading photos to our laptop and labeling them so we remember what was where when we get home. We also enjoy some of the bar/lounge entertainment, a little time in the casino, and some of the lectures and shows.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but we grew up entertaining ourselves rather than relying on constant outside 'happenings'. To us, it's kind of sad to see so many people that can't be happy without all the noise and planned entertainment. Luckily there's something for everyone on most cruises.

We are 'self-entertainers' and don't need the ship or anyone else to amuse us constantly. We rarely join in trivia, bingo, pool games or the like. We much prefer doing our own thing, when and how we wish.

We do not get bored on cruises. :)

Same here.

Yes, I've been bored on board!

It's that third sea day going through the Bay of Biscay in howling gales, when all the outside areas are taped off, and there's no indoor pool. That's when 4 or 5 gather under the stair to try to watch the sea screen showing a film in lurid red with crazy dots along the bottom.....People watching is non existent, because the sick bags have been posted.....books have to be returned because we're due in at 3.30am tomorrow, and the deck games are cancelled forever.

That's when I long for home! (it's happened twice).

Probably if all of us were totally honest, we have had some times when we were a bit bored or had something unfortunate happen ... even on our favorite cruise line.

An indoor pool would be no use anyway, because if the outdoor pools are unsafe due to waves, so is the indoor one. You picked the wrong line - P&O, for example, always stop at Gibraltar or Vigo so there'll only be 2 sea days. ;)

Sadly, it was Azura- in June, of all times, and actually it was 5 days of gales between UK, Madeira, Gib etc.....the port days were warm and sunny, but as soon as we entered the Atlantic- POW! I've been through bad weather on Ventura, but the indoor pool managed to stay open for much of the way. My non-seasick husband felt very, very queasy swimming in the forward pool that trip. (even reception rolled their eyes when I went for a pill for him!!)

  • 1 year later...

I appreciate your responses. I also find pleasure in sitting, watching and enjoying being on the sea. Watching for wildlife or the waves. My original post was more about inevitable small changes in the Cruiselines entertainment product and reactions to the changes.. I still like to go cruise.

We hardly ever partake in the organized ship-bored activities. Just not our thing.

Of course I get bored on cruises. Sometimes there is a little too much down time especially on Sea Days. My DW solves that problem by having a nap. I can't nap, I don't gamble, and my liver doesn't appreciate me hanging out in the bars alone ;) , so I'll read some more or just wonder the ship for a while and turn into the human GPS for the rest of the cruise. On my first couple of cruises I was deathly bored - "What, there's nothing open at 4:30am!!!!" I tend to wake very early even on vacation and on land vacations I could hit the golf course at dawn or take long walks to discovery the area we were in. I took a couple of cruises to find replacement activities for the early AM.

The only time I got bored were a couple of sea days on Azamara off the coast of Portugal - rough seas in the Atlantic, and I was managing not to get sea sickness, as long as I didn't try to read! (I'm one of those people that can't read in cars or buses, either, gives me terrible motion sickness) I don't mind ship activities but they didn't have much going on. Got a bit bored but still, a boring day on a cruise is better than a day at work :D

As long as I have my own mind, no situation is boring. I have sat through many a long-winded staff meeting, etc., making my grocery list, replaying films I enjoy, etc. Also, I always have multiple books with me on vacation so that is the bulk of my entertainment.

On a ship, there is ample opportunity for meditative and contemplative time and that is never boring, in my opinion.

I am not a fan of ship-organized activities or excursions, preferring to create my own independent experiences.

Do you ever find yourself in certain moments, not interested in all the activities, for pay options, ect offered on the ship?

Do you find yourself momentarily bored?

What do you do when this happens to you?

Is it a sign that you have chosen a ship/cruiseline that is not suited for what interests you?

I don't need the ship to entertain me 24/7. I actually enjoy going out on my balcony to "try" to read my tablet only to have the ocean lull me to sleep. My idea of perfect relaxation.

You have way more patience than I do! I've been known to walk out of meetings if they got boring. Luckily I was in a position to do that and not get fired!:D Once my reputation got around it was amazing how the meetings got straight to the point and were way less boring.;)

My Kindle and my camera. With those two I am never bored.

Getting up early to take photos of the Sunrise over an "empty" ship, then getting a cup of coffee and sit one deck up from the pool and watch for the Chogs to come save the chairs around the pool. Have some interesting photos of that activity.

Sitting on a lounge chair on the hallway outside of the Explorers Lounge, watching the other passengers "dance' down the hallway in time to the music.

Watching the shows in the Piazza.

Sitting on deck with the Kindle reading and watching for critters swimming along side of the ship

Etc, Etc, Etc.

Never have been bored on a Cruise Ship

We generally do long cruises so have had quite a few sea days and we did have a chunk of one of the the days where we wanted to stay in bed.

It wasn't so much boredom more than being a bit overwhelmed and not fancying all the craziness of activities...not to mentioned our anti Malaria medication had kicked in and made us a bit queasy.

On every cruise except 7-day Alaska cruise, I have been bored. It always sets in around Day 5. My most boring cruise was my last cruise - 7 day Caribbean on the Celebrity Reflection.

Yes, like others, I can enjoy reading a book on our balcony, but I don't need to spend $600 a day to do that.

I don't know how people take long cruises.

I have not been bored yet.

I am not interested in the activities either.

I might like to play that bean bag game sometime.

If there were activities that were actually interesting to me, then I would pay attention to them.

I cannot say I have ever been terribly "bored" on a cruise. Sometimes I enjoy being more active, and sometimes I enjoy just kicking back and not doing much of anything.

If I do find myself feeling a little "bored", I try to find something that I would not ordinarily do. The last cruise I was on, I watched the movies on the poolside screen. I went out on deck and watched "Field of Dreams." I like the movie anyhow, but it was fun watching it on deck.

I participated in the scavenger hunt on the second day of my last cruise. I realized there was a LOT I did not know about the ship. It made me want to explore the ship much more thoroughly and check out places on the ship I had not thought to stop before. It definitely gave me something to do throughout the rest of the week when I had little pockets of time.

I am a talker too, so I try to meet new people. I know, I may be that person you wish would shut up. I will leave you alone if you shrug me off though.
