Sheheen's comment about drifting casino smoke, really????

Oh wow, another smoking thread. I am going to miss out on all the entertainment while I am on my cruise. <grin>

Well I could always update you on your return, but I'm pretty sure you could guess how it's going to play out anyway. ;)

These thread subjects are like soap operas, if you miss a week or two you come back and you are in the same spot that you left.

Have a great cruise, keep her safe for me, I will see her in a few weeks.

However the good thing about leaving it open is that there's less smoke in the casino for us non-smoking gamblers  and those poor staff.

Incidentally, are there any smoking rules in the casino, e.g. can one player at a table object to another smoking? Or all smokers at one end of a table?

Glass it in, use air cleaners, and vent the casino air to the smoke stack, kind of like a negative pressure hospital room. Air goes in, but it can't get out into the general 678 areas. It doesn't need to be a strong vent, just enough to influence the air movement in one direction....

Long time RCCL cruiser considering NCL with 2 questions.

1) Does the smoke drift into O'Sheehans on Breakaway?

2) Is smoking permitted on the waterfront restaurant area at dinner time?

Thanks

I sailed the Breakaway last June and spent a lot of time at O'Sheehans and honestly never noticed any smoke. I also sat out on the Waterfront and there were ashtrays on the tables at Shakers Martini Bar. Didn't use the outdoor restaurant area of the Waterfront.

Happy cruising..............don`t sweat the small stuff........life is too short

Er beggin' pardon sir! Was it the choir you were singing with that called on you to join different choirs? :D

The only time I've ever been in a casino was on a cruise ship, not to gamble, but just walking through it to get from point A to point B when I had to. I noticed the smell of smoke, but I wouldn't say it bothered me to the point where I had to bring it up to anyone. It's not my favorite smell of course, but I understand that people do it. I don't have any health issues that are aggravated by it so perhaps that is why.

If I actually knew how to use a slot machine or play cards or could bear to risk losing money (which I just can't bring myself to do) and spent an extended period of time in a smoke filled casino, I may sing a different tune possibly?

Another thought here, I'm pretty young (well, not as young as I'd like to be) but I barely remember the days of restaurants having a smoking section. My coworker told me of the days when smoking was allowed EVERYWHERE, even in the tiny office in which we work. Wasn't smoking also allowed on airplanes? Sounds like a lot of progress has been made.

I agree and I was on Breakaway just a few weeks ago. I was pleasantly surprised.

Walking through the casino when it was busy, sure, you'd notice the smoke. But I found it easy enough to avoid walking the casino most of the time (the times I didn't was when I got mixed up figuring out the "you are here" vs "you want to be there" route).

Yup... smoking on airplanes was common. The seats had built in ash trays too.

It is just a matter of time and the Western world will be pretty much smoke free.

Asia and the Middle East may be generations away from following the rest of the world.

Consider sailing on the Oasis or Allure. The Casino is divided for smoking and non

smoking and it is easily avoided.

The dining tables on the waterfront are non smoking, smokers should get up and move to the bar area like outside shakers/Maltings to smoke.

Kevin on the Getaway UK TA preview trip made it very clear that NCL now knows which passenger groups generate the most profitable revenue for NCL and that is what drives the direction of the company.

One thing for sure that being a repeat passenger is not enough on it's own, you need to be in one of the high profitable target groups for NCL to want you.

I suspect the casino and in particular smoking gamblers are quite near the top of that list so unlikely that NCL will restrict smoking in the casino until another profitable group decides to walk.

It may be that in Europe the balance is different(casinos always seem more empty) so we may see changes over here.

One area that NCL does seem to have restricted smoking are the outside food areas great outdoors and Bali high were reduced/non smoking on the Jade, they both used to be smoking one side only.

We avoided Taste (one of the MDR) on the Epic because we were getting a slight smoke smell during dinner. Just enough to be unpalatable, but not really "smoke" like when you are in the casino. The casino was busy, but the air cleaners did a pretty good job. I was surprised that Taste, one floor below but open to the casino, was affected by it. We did notice that it had much lighter crowds most of the times we checked.

I don't like having to walk through the casino to get to places (floors 5 and 7 kind of redirect you through the casino as you head fore or aft). I guess that's by design. The Epic isn't our favorite, and we would choose another line rather than sail on her again. Enough crapping in your stateroom; give me a real bathroom.

The newer two ships must have the same kind of casino design. Not a deal breaker for me really, although we prefer a ship with at least one deck we can walk around the ship on.

What I don't understand about his comment, is that a cruise consultant on the Sun told me that smoke was their number one complaint. Looking at the deals on Getaway that are being offered, I can't help but wonder if sails are lackluster and whether smoke is part of that issue. If I were trying to brand a cruise line for families, as I thought NCL was doing, I would be very aware of how smoke from the casinos might effect them.

That said, I believe glassing in the back portion between the atrium and the back restaurant would be the way to fix the issue. There are enough non-smoking gamblers to fill the forward section of the casino.

I agree, that so long as gambling is a major revenue maker, smoking will be a part of their formula, but they must be careful not to lose the rest of their audience in their efforts to raise gambling revenue.

I have been on the Epic. Smoke WAS an issue for me, not just in the atrium, but throughout the entire area, including Taste. One time I walked into Taste with a clear head, and walked out unable to breathe from blockage, AND, it cleared up not long after leaving that area of the ship.

I personally would not seek out these megaships so long as smoking continues to be an issue. Neither will I totally avoid them. I had a good time on the Epic, despite the smoke.

I have started looking at other lines. I haven't yet booked on them. I keep hoping NCL will wake up and fix the problem. Sheehan's statements leads me to believe they have no intention of resolving the smoke issues for families and those with health issues.

When I decide they have become the favored line of smokers, I will move on. I've reached platinum, and do NOT wish to move on. There are simple ways to make a ship both smoker and non-smoker friendly. I never had issues with their older ships and plan to continue sailing on those.

I don't believe I'm the only one rethinking NCL primarily because of smoke. I think Sheehan's statement was more than inaccurate and I think it will bite him down the line.

They don't necessarily have to restrict smoking, I understand those smokers have as much right to smoke, but they could take care of the drifting smoke problem better than they do, just like the casinos do in Vegas. Especially when the smoke is drifting to areas OUTSIDE the casino. There is clearly a problem, so instead of ignoring it, just fix it.

If NCL can have various restaurants why can't they have 2 small casinos - one smoking and one non?

Or... Why not one or two non smoking nights on a 7 night cruise? Some lines do this.

Not for nothing but that's the stupidest thing I ever heard. One or two non smoking nights? LoL

I just got back from Vegas. There are no NO SMOKING areas. Atlantic city on the other hand has more non smoking areas than smoking. And all NYC casinos are non smoking

Just because people comment on it here on CC doesn't mean they leave comments directly with NCL, so his comment about the casino smoke might be accurate. CC posters are only about 2% (from what I've heard) of the cruisers out there.

wow. I feel really insignificant. My opinion does not matter and I am talking into the wind. Sure.

They did it on my friend's cruise on Royal Caribbean. So they don't think it is stupid.

I don't think it's stupid either. But on the same token, I think on those nights they could make one of the bars smoking. That way smokers still had one inside venue they could go to.
