IRL_Joanie Posted April 30, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2012 The US Navy is preparing to depart Port Everglades as I type this post. Watch on the Webcam here: http://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/index.html Yesterday I overheard the Harbor Master telling one of the Coast Guard ships that they had a 2 hour window in which to depart beginning at 7 am. So since it is now a little after 7 am it is on now:) Good Bye to all our guys and gals and thank you!! Joanie

Krazy Kruizers Posted April 30, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks Joanie. I wonder why they have to get out within that 2 hour window?? I could understand it if there were a lot of cruise ships due in.

Krazy Kruizers Posted April 30, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 30, 2012 It is very windy there this morning. Rough seas.
catl331 Posted April 30, 2012 #8 Share Posted April 30, 2012 I'm thinking security reasons for the window, also. Look how many boats were guarding that submarine! sure is rough out there today!
IRL_Joanie Posted April 30, 2012 Author #9 Share Posted April 30, 2012 I think the 2 hour window is due to all the cargo traffic waiting to come in. I know they've had ships waiting off the coast for up to 5 days to get in. Joanie
dmwnc1959 Posted April 30, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 30, 2012 USS San Jacinto (CG-56) is the one leaving now. She is a 24 year old cruiser.
catl331 Posted April 30, 2012 #11 Share Posted April 30, 2012 They had one wicked rainy weekend due to a storm coming up from Cuba. It seems to have stalled and they canceled the air show for two days.
IRL_Joanie Posted April 30, 2012 Author #12 Share Posted April 30, 2012 They had one wicked rainy weekend due to a storm coming up from Cuba. It seems to have stalled and they canceled the air show for two days. Actually it was only cancelled Sunday. It went on as planned (with Thunbderbirds modifying their event) Saturday. It was awesome watching it on the new PE Webcam:) I got some awesome snapshots of it:) Joanie

gigianne Posted April 30, 2012 #18 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks for letting us know Joanie - I just logged on in time to see probably the last ship to leave. I am sure glad I am not on a cruise ship heading out today - the ocean looks nasty!!

OVgirl Posted April 30, 2012 #20 Share Posted April 30, 2012 A couple of die-hard fisherman out there now. Wonder if they will catch anything?
PathfinderEss Posted April 30, 2012 #21 Share Posted April 30, 2012 I was still sleeping when this was going on but DH watch and he said that taking the carrier out was really something to see. They don't have side thrusters like cruise ships so the tugs have to do all the work for them. Weather at PE looks really nasty.
jaguarstyper Posted April 30, 2012 #22 Share Posted April 30, 2012 We just happened to be in New Orleans during the tail-end of their Navy Week. It was kind of nice seeing all of the sailors in New Orleans kicking back and having a good time. Much deserved R&R. When the ships, including 4 tall ships and 8 modern vessels departed, they did it in a very quick and orderly process.
Hugh0906 Posted April 30, 2012 #23 Share Posted April 30, 2012 I thought all the warnings handed out by the carrier were interesting too. None of the other ships did that. There must have been at least 6 of them to not approach the vessel in any way unless you wanted to be arrested. Hugh in Dallas
